- GeeksSpeakFont, on 12/18/2008, -0/+14The difference is definitely important! I can see a huge improvement in the variation of tones.
- cadmiumpaint, on 12/19/2008, -1/+9even though its all digital its still all about Ansel Adams zone style...pure whites, pure blacks
- BossKey, on 12/19/2008, -0/+6What you don't want are solid black and white; that's a lack of detail, and it's not what Ansel Adams was really about. Ansel Adams' Zone System was just as much about the correct distribution of intermediate tones across the entire dynamic range as well as the correct targeting of black and white to set the range that frames all the rest of the tones.
- ngmcs8203, on 12/19/2008, -0/+6I'm happy with my B&W's out of Lightroom. Photoshop has now become the tool for comping.
- maximilen, on 12/19/2008, -0/+4Reminded me of Ansel Adams and his brilliantly black skies. Master of B&W.
- patrickchee, on 12/19/2008, -2/+6Great techniques, essential for getting your blacks black and whites white as well as the mid tone range in between. I also use Image/Adjustments/Selective Color and punching up or down the WHITES and BLACKS.
- mikedaul, on 12/19/2008, -0/+3My favorite method is to convert rgb images to CMYK, desaturate, then adjust the midtones (using curves) of the black channel.
- cathpah, on 12/19/2008, -0/+2great tutorial....certainly a heck of a lot better than what most people do (the ol "convert to B&W").
if you don't go as far as what they're recommending in this tutorial....at LEAST use the channel mixer tool in monochrome. - TaintBrush, on 12/20/2008, -0/+1At first I was going to be like, "Oh great, a tutorial about Curves." But some of this stuff is actually pretty useful! When I know I want black and white, I usually shoot on b&w film (I like medium format for that) because digital just can't do black and white yet. But some of these techniques are even good for enhancing film scans.
- jaygeeze, on 12/20/2008, -0/+1This is a well-detailed tutorial! I was looking for a great resource for tuning black and white images (it's not as easy as using the "convert to BW" command in Photoshop if you want to get great results). Ty for Digg's new user interface, I got to this post from Digg another submission!
- centran, on 12/19/2008, -0/+1Bookmarked and will try this out next time I want to deal with B&W.
One of the biggest annoyances, for me, between film and digital is B&W. I played around in photoshop before but I never seem to get a B&W photo to look as good as if I used film and a darkroom. I have tried a couple of the techniques in the article but not others. - sgtrock53, on 12/19/2008, -0/+0great tutorial
- cksos1, on 12/20/2008, -0/+0I love B&W photography and this advice and technique is awesome!! A keeper!
