- gwjc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Because a pic and printer paper are accessible to all of us. Most diggers, probably don't have oils and a prepared canvas ready or even a decent drawing pen and a proper sketchpad. Reminds me of:
Napoleon: Really? It took me like three hours to finish the shading on your upper lip. It's probably the best drawing I've ever done
and
Deb: What are you drawing?
Napoleon: A liger.
Deb: What is a liger?
Napoleon: It's pretty much my favorite animal. It's like a lion and a tiger mixed - bred for its skills in magic. - RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Many people assume that you need expensive tools to create great art. All manner of art supplies from paints to cameras to computers are sold under the premise that they will unlock your creativity. This page shows that even with the cheapest and most readily available of tools, you can create great stuff... if you have the talent.
- NobbyNobody, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Hi there, I'm NobbyNobody (owner of biro-art). Sorry about the downtime, but the server keeled over. The site has been moved to a VPS temporarily, which is why you might be seeing some image issues.
If you ensure your cache is clean, you should now get the site, or you could go directly:

Cheers for the great feedback everyone! - MrBabyMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12A talented artist is a talented artist, in any medium.
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12First, if you're going to be a pedant, at least put the apostrophe in "it's." Second, numbering your points like this when there are only two (and nobody asked anyway) is a good way of showing that you are a terrible person.
- JakeMcMahon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10The guy posts to b3ta.com as NobbyNobody. His drawings are just immaculately done.
- pond876, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8As long as you're going to be pedantic, I have one such pen right here. The correct capitalisation is "BiC".

- NobbyNobody, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yep, It's a Speccy. 16k of rubber-keyed class.
- NobbyNobody, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7What makes you think that? Apart from tidying up blemishes (if there are any) after scanning them in, the pictures are entirely hand-drawn.
- NobbyNobody, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6My apologies, I thought you were implying the pictures themselves were done in PS. Yes, I add a background in some cases for dramatic effect. But in terms of the amount of time it takes to produce the pictures, that's a very short process. The time and skill is definitely in the drawing.
- whalesalad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5My cousin drew me an amazing photo of Gandalf while in prison (long story), it looked absolutley amazing. He's since passed away, its cool to see some of this great form of art, reminds me of him.
- NobbyNobody, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why thank you, feel free to invest in one of the full-colour mugs (they're very popular). ;)

- lbft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What he said. And he's a nice bloke too.
- NobbyNobody, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That's OK, it was one hell of shock when I got a phone call at work from my Wife who'd been emailed by the server admin. My badwidth use jumped from 180mb on Friday to 2.7gb on Saturday! eep!
The Digg effect indeed! - bashnu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Why is the technique more interesting than the content?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Here's the coral cache link to the gallery:
http://www.biro-art.com.nyud.net:8080/gallery.html - travis08, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Because many either have a background of difference clouds or a soft blur. He also states in his f.a.q. the amount of time spent compositing several drawings together to make one image. Obviously the main part of the images are done on pen and paper, but for the final product he has used a computer for more than just scanning and cleaning them up. I only mentioned this because the title of the post and several comments suggest just the simple use of a pen and paper.
- NobbyNobody, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What do you want to know?

- schleufer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I do quite a bit of artwork with a BiC pen as well, and most people assume it is pencil. I can certainly appreciate the amount of effort and talent required for Biro-Art.
Only a very small sample of ballpoint pen work is available at my site, because it is such a niche market and I don't push it as my "final" work. But in my opinion, the ballpoint work is often far more interesting than the final.
Too bad this article has been pushed to the third page of Digg, it would be interesting to hear a bit more from the artist. - calums, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's awesome! haha, Headcrab porn :D

*chuckles*
It made me think of Pratchett books.. - roostersheep, on 01/16/2009, -1/+2I have dreadful memories of art class because of the daunting teacher. One thing I'll always remember her saying is "It's not possible to shade with a pen!". I understand it's not the exact definition of shading, the artist has just created that comic book effect, but I'd love to show my old art teacher these, simply to have her contradicted.
- tprzepiorka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yea as stated above everyone has pen and paper but not everyone has the skills...
- nogami, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Lol... The guy's anti-hotlinking is going crazy and destroying his own site.

- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Awesome! Lots of ants! My favorite insect. :)
- diversionmary, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1pah.
Ballpoint is a lot more flexible than that.
The hard part with ballpoint is getting away from the medium. It's non-archival, and will yellow and dissappear with any heat or light. even under very expensive UV glass it still fades considerably. It's my fave weapon of choice though.
My first comment on digg and it's shameless self promotion. boo me.

regular drawings: http://diversionmary.com/gallery/drawings - JohnWPB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This type of art form is very popular with Prison Inmates where a simple pen and paper are all this they have to work with. I have seen many drawings that my roommates brother has sent him, and resemble, if not out due (buy far) the images I see on this site.

Welcome to Digg! - Borbus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2http://www.duggmirror.com/design/Biro-Art_Fantastic_Ballpoint_Drawings/
But the mirror is getting hammered too. - thunder7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sweet Links Thank you
- u8myfoood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1quite skillful, you make one mistake, its REALLY hard to correct, unlike pencil, but is A LOT less likely to smudge.
- Orbzon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This guy has quite the gift! All of these pictures are insane, I love it.
This one cracks me up: http://www.biro-art.com/fairkitty.html

- jonst52, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Funny. Clicking your link (or the snipurl version below), directs to the Google Image page. There, clicking a thumbnail, we get the usual "Not found" page. Now, just for fun, try to click the thumbnail at the top of the page (the one with the "see full size image" label) and see what you get.
- pdileepa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Digg mirror, anyone?
- kitchenpan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0If you like pen art, then check out this guy from the Ukraine. He does amazing work with a political message. He occasionally adds a bit of water color. Check it out. Cool stuff. http://www.kolyada.com/
- pytey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0BTW "Biro" is the surnname of the Hungarian guy that invented the ballpoint pen. Laszlo Biro invented it and licensed it to the UK government during WW2. Biro also licensed it to "Bich" in France, they dropped the "H" in the "Bich" name and it became the "Bic" pen that you know and love.
- vogelzang, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5comments =/= digg effect.
- lolwtfhaha, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2"Why is the technique more interesting than the content?"
Content is dead. - nemoder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Anyone know what that keyboard looking thing is that's older than the dinosaurs?
http://83.223.100.236/heaventohell.html - Bobski, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1If you're going to correct someone do it right - Check BIC's website. Only in the logo is it spelled BiC. *****.
