Actually the patent on Truetype Fonts is owned by Apple. - burke, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Seeing as how Linux is more than comfortable using .ttf....

http://www.dafont.com/en/ - darwinandpaine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Porkstacker is right. And btw, these fonts are hideous. You get what you pay for.
- rach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I never understood the desire of most font sites to sort alphabetically. I don't tend to memorize the font names and categories are so much more useful.
- ansonparker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The problem is finding cool fonts amongst the plethora of crap.
A while ago I put together a bunch of some of the good free ones (good in an ironic hipster sense, that is): http://phasetwo.org/post/top_10_free_hipster_fonts.html - Kakaze, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Just what the world needs; another site full of ***** fonts.
Call me when you find a site giving a way high quality, good looking, TEXT fonts for free, not junk novelty fonts. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Pretty good site. It has it's faults though (like using lorem ipsum instead of "the quick brown fox" & numeric characters).
One thing I noticed is that a lot of the font downloads contain .txt files saying "thanks for downloading this font from www._somewebsite_.com".. clearly showing that these fonts were stolen from other font download sites. Which is kinda cheesy.
Not bad.. it's bookmark worthy, but really nothing spectacular. - MrSunshine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I still prefer dafont.com.
- waverider1899, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Hey there Shagie,
Speak for yourself! I think I need at least one more suggested font site, because I really have nothing better to do tonight than surf endless font sites and stare at how many different ways there are to stylize and depict 26 symbols of the alphabet.
For some reason all these sites are triggering childhood memories: I'm expecting Grover, Cookie-Monster, and/or Big Bird (as well as Ernie) to appear in a pop up window. Its too many letters already... Even posting this message I am exposed to a bunch of letters below to verify that I am human posting these message... there's a letter D... followed by 4CME... however I think it would look better in nice bold Broadway font. - crawfishsoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This Digg is brought to you by the letter D and the number 4
- techobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Typeface: is the design of the alphabet--the shape of the letters that make up the typestyle. The letters, numbers, and symbols that make up a design of type. So when you say “Arial” or “Goudy” you’re talking about a set of letters in a specific style.
Font: is the digital file that contains/describes the typeface. Think of the font as a little piece of software that tells the computer and printer how to display and print the typeface.
According to Adobe’s type gloassary: “A font is one weight, width, and style of a typeface. Before scalable type, there was little distinction between the terms font, face, and family. Font and face still tend to be used interchangeably, although the term face is usually more correct.”
If you want to get a little deeper:
A typeface family is a group of typefaces that were designed to be used together. For example, Goudy Old Style has Roman (upright or normal), italic (slanted and cursive), bold and bold italic versions. Each of the style and weight combinations is called a face or typeface, and together they are, hopefully, a happy typeface family (rather than a disfunctional typeface family which will probably be more familiar to you). - Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's almost all novelty fonts, which is ok if that's what you're looking for.
The interface on the site is one of the better ones, though. - podgey22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just remember that installing all of them will likely quadruple the time it takes you to boot windows!
http://www.thepcspy.com/articles/other/what_slows_windows_down/3 - porkstacker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Hmm, Dugg down since there are no Postscript fonts. Everyone who has been paying attention since 1996 knows that truetype fonts suck since they never render consistently across a wide range of computers, and generally produce unpredictable results (lack of kerning and half-assed tracking) when printed.
- stuffhappens, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You're new round here, I guess.
Many use the following criteria for Digg submissions:
1) It's a Web site - Check ( )
2) Er, that's it, - glitch1501, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i was going to say the same thing
- vinterstille, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Great - I have two of my fonts on there: "Barbie Jealous Sisters Handwriting" and "Rub This! - Transfer Sheet"
- XBackstabberX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i love dafont.com
- RonaldLewis, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8I've been looking for a site such as this for a long while! Great find! There's a plethora of interesting fonts on this site to download. Do check it out!
- Himself, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no Type1? no OpenType?
no thanks - sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Can anybody find The Pirate Bay font, the one used in their logo??
- Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You can change the preview text to "the quick brown fox." Just click on the button and type it in.
- zclip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Those fonts are garbage. If you need fonts (typefaces would actually be the correct term) to do something creative then you should stick to "open typefaces."
And if you plan on having a bunch of fonts, get yourself Extensis Suitcase (available for Mac & Windoze) otherwise you'll kill your computers performance. You should never have more than just the necessary system fonts enabled. - Anrkist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why do so many font sites insist on categorizing their fonts alphabetically ? Selecting by typeface is so much better.
Which is better:
"I am going for an 'A' look to my site"
or
"I am looking for a grungy style" - http://www.1001fonts.com/ - briang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2^ until you go to a new page

10,000 free crap fonts? How the ***** is this Digg worthy?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Star_Wars_languages - caliform, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3That is the worst selection of free fonts I have ever seen. You haven't even bothered to include some of the ultra-stylish free fonts of Buro Destrukt, for instance, it's just lame shaded, and probably traced commercial caps or letters.
- weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This post is ridiculous. I had to add it to my del.icio.us. Should I submit any Threadless designs, woo boy am I ready!
- allatti2d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You guys all rock.
Thanks for your comments and opinions, and especially the additional links. I'm glad this is on Digg -- not so much for the headline link (which I could have googled), but for all your discussion and information.
Big hugs to all you commenters!!!! :)
(sorry, kinda corny, but true!) - pr0t0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've seen a few comments about many fonts slowing down Windows. This is true, but you can use a font management package which will allow you to turn fonts on and off as needed. I primarily use a Mac which has a font management system built in, but I prefer FontAgent Pro (have also used MasterJuggler, Suitcase, and FontReserve).
A quick google search for Windows Font Managers will yield some results for the dark side.
Here's one (not free though):
http://www.proximasoftware.com/fontexpert/ - techobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I totally agree, but I don't think that too many people are going to be typesetting any professional work with the fonts they find on this site.
- DarkHack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now this I could use.
- heinous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@sinembarg0: It's called Cloister Black. http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/castletype/cloister-black-ct/cloister-black/
- dford, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I found some fonts in here that's not on fontfreak, and even some containing 1001fonts.txt. I guess what they say "All free fonts have been collected from around the web, and maintained with all files intact" is true. And I agree with you, fontfreak navigation is really sucky! This one is far better!
- pezholio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1He he! I love the 'Rope' font! (that's an 'a')
- joeleslie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice site, lovely collection, but I don't like the lack of categories. I don't like crawling through pages and pages of fonts beginning with S...

Oops. I hate that when you click reply and it redirects you to login, your comment no longer appears as a reply as specified. - dustko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Mac can use "windows fonts" natively as well.
ps. fontfreak.com is another font site I use, though the navigation sucks. Actually betterfonts.com looks like it's using most if not all of fontfreaks fonts.. I wonder if they just downloaded the fontfreak package.. - zclip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1To quote from my typography textbook: "If font is the cookie cutter, then the typeface is the cookie."
You were pretty much correct, but here it is even more elaborated. A font is used to design a typeface. True Type is a font (although a ***** one), Postscript is another (slowly being phased out by) Opentype. Opentype is great because of the amount of information it can hold (it has ligatures and old-style proportional numbers, dotless i's, and variations of individual letters).
Windows and MS Word made the misuse of the word FONT popular. It was called type since Gutenberg's day. It's the same today and what they mean in the font menu is actually typeface.
Back to Opentype. If you've used typefaces that are Opentype you should have noticed that most of them had many weights usually going from Light, Roman, Semibold, Bold, Black, Ultrablack (with an Italic variation of each). Often you'll also find that they will have Condensed variations for Light, Roman, Semibold, etc. What does this mean? This means you can use many weights (this adds contrast!) to whatever it you are creating without making it look like ***** (or just unprofessional) because you used 4 different typefaces (extra points if you used Arial Rounded, Comic Sans, Papyrus or Impact; double your points if you used all of them on the same page). How the @#%& did this turn into a rant?
Anyway: Booo novelty fonts, hooray Opentype! - ToeKing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe someone will zip them all up and put them in one place... I don't like crawling through obscure names on multiple pages to find a font either.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not bad. I like the interface.
- NextGenXbox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Awesome site. Very easy to preview fonts. This will come handy for my 2D Design class since we asked to bring in different fonts.
- tinkafoo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6They may have 10,000, but you won't find good ones like Helvetica or Univers because they're not free.
- shagie, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2I dont think anyone needs this many font sites.. geez!
