- tech10171968, on 07/03/2009, -1/+11Oh boy, cue up the "but GIMP is not Photoshop" posts we ALWAYS see in these GIMP articles.
Guess what? You're absolutely right, but for a reason you probably didn't expect: Gimp was never made to be a "Photoshop Killer" or even an equivalent, *especially* for professionals or uber-advanced users. If you earn your bread as a professional designer or graphic artist then you need professional tools - like Photoshop.
OTOH, the other 95% of computer users do not work in that field; they only need to touch up some photos every once in a while or make some good amateur-level graphics. These are the same users who probably don't use even half of Photoshop's capabilities, don't know what CMYK means or anything like that. Those folks can either (a) pay the $600 (?) pricetag for CS3, (b) pirate it, or (c) use a free alternative which does pretty everything they usually need. This is where GIMP and Paint.Net come in.
I wouldn't say that comparing GIMP the Photoshop is like apples to oranges; I'd say it's more like comparing a pickup truck to a Porsche - they both do some of the same basic things but, at the end of the day, have different purposes. - zzz@tkz, on 07/03/2009, -0/+6I quarter to bookmark this.
- preppywhiteguy, on 07/03/2009, -1/+6Great post. All tutorials are on one page.
For free software, Gimp can't be beat. - syntaxgs, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4I half too book mark this becosue it,s alot of tutorials
- davzie, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4Two thirds here
- sublimethinker, on 07/03/2009, -1/+4I have no problem using GIMP and doing things I never could figure out in photoshop. Just because you're not used to the GIMP doesn't mean it sucks.
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -1/+4you are just a trained monkey
if adobe changed the panels to a different color you wont be able to use Photoshop - shuffer, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3It's half pass thee.
- werberg, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2GIMP is nowhere near photoshop level and professionalism.
I have to repeat what this guy mentioned over here:
http://piestar.net/2009/03/01/gimp-sucks/ - davzie, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1I just need to add that I didn't say anywhere that is sucks. It works brilliantly for things but it really doesn't compare as a professional tool.
- Slapo, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1@werberg:
sublimethinker didn't claim it was in his post above. - Azzk1kr, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1I'm gonna put it the other way around:
Are you serious? Photoshop is so difficult to use. Maybe I'm too set in my ways with The GIMP, but I find it hard to navigate around and do what I want to do with it otherwise I'd be using it as a commercial alternative.
Indeed, as sublimethinker mentioned: just because you're not used to the GIMP doesn't mean it sucks. - Vedlen, on 07/03/2009, -1/+037 Get Lost
- widgetmaker, on 07/03/2009, -3/+136 Get Photoshop
- davzie, on 07/03/2009, -11/+4Are you serious? Gimp is so difficult to use, even with Gimp Shop installed. Maybe I'm too set in my ways with Photoshop but I find it hard to navigate around and do what I want to do with it otherwise I'd be using it as a free alternative. With no 32bit image support it really doesn't compare...
