- dogstar0125, on 01/22/2008, -30/+134Man that's ugly.
- inactive, on 01/22/2008, -7/+57I literally said out loud, "what the ***** is that?"
- dorkslayer, on 01/22/2008, -13/+59It kind of looks like a big pile of garbage.
- arbouler, on 01/22/2008, -8/+50actually those structures are a big breakthrough in the the fields of architecture and structural engineering. those forms are really tough to design. i personally think theyre actually gorgeous. damn those chinese for cheap steel and cheap labor!
- cavie2002, on 01/22/2008, -5/+29is that where the cloverfield monster lives??
- ironchef31, on 01/22/2008, -2/+25Looks like a bad scotch tape job
- orangefly, on 01/22/2008, -9/+28is it made out of lead....???....
- Schneckehaus, on 01/22/2008, -8/+26Looks like CGI? No.
It just looks like ***** architecture. - Richandler, on 01/22/2008, -7/+23You stole the words out of my mouth/fingers.
- Brian48216, on 01/22/2008, -1/+15I think the designers are actually European firms. I think they're either Dutch or German.
- ghidorahnotweak, on 01/22/2008, -5/+17I like the cube-and-nest look. It's like the Olympics are an alien world.
- norman619, on 01/22/2008, -7/+19How is finding that building fugly bashing China? It's more like bashing the person who designed it. And yes it's fugly. And no it does not look like CG.
- jaems, on 01/22/2008, -5/+15Exactly. And seeing as how everyone is digging you down, the bashing continues.
- Razster, on 01/22/2008, -4/+13If I submitted that to my department I would be laughed right out of a job, I would crawl in a hole and die for thinking this was even remotely something you might call architecture/design.
It is poorly designed and looks like a bad painting. - anillop, on 01/22/2008, -6/+14Its not china bashing, its an architectural critique. Stop being so quick to get in a huff about racism.
- woofers07, on 01/22/2008, -4/+12it looks like a Christmas present wrapped by a 4 year old.
- fiveholecamper, on 01/22/2008, -3/+10Nope. Just the paint.
- rhylan, on 01/22/2008, -4/+11its still better than the IMAX in Bournemouth uk
- Chakat, on 01/22/2008, -2/+8Sometime a design has never been done because it looks like crap. This is one of those times. It doesn't fit in with its surroundings at all, in fact, seems designed purely on the nature of clashing as much as possible.
- Lionhart, on 01/22/2008, -4/+10Okay, yes their economy is growing and improving from what it has been in the past.. but it is still not that great. It's great for you if you are an investor, but the majority of Chinese people are still dirt poor.
- on0c0no, on 01/22/2008, -1/+6Actually, EMP is a total POS. Not even Frank Gehry, the architect himself, likes it.
From Wikipedia:
Gehry's work has its detractors. Among the criticisms:[2]
The buildings waste structural resources by creating functionless forms
The buildings are apparently designed without researching the local climate
The spectacle of a building often overwhelms its intended use (especially in the case of museums and arenas)
The buildings do not seem to belong in their surroundings "organically"
Seattle's EMP Museum represents this phenomenon at its most extreme. Microsoft's Paul Allen chose Gehry as the architect of the urban structure to house his public collection of music history artifacts. While the result is undeniably unique, critical reaction came in the form of withering attacks. The bizarre color choices, the total disregard for architectural harmony with built and natural surroundings, and the mammoth scale led to accusations that Gehry had simply "got it wrong." Admirers of the building remind critics that similar attacks were levelled against the Eiffel Tower in the late 19th century, and that only historical perspective would allow a fair evaluation of the building's merits. However, practical criticisms have continued.
Not to mention: http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2007/11/ ...
Gehry is important but a hack - not even in the same league as HdeM. - norman619, on 01/22/2008, -2/+7And were either drunk, high, or both during its design.
- secrity, on 01/22/2008, -0/+5*****?
- TheSaladMan, on 01/22/2008, -2/+7I live in Bournemouth and that thing's a goddamn eyesore, but this is worse.
- gers4302, on 01/22/2008, -0/+5#!/usr/bin/perl
looks more like CGI to me... - sumsuni, on 01/22/2008, -3/+8when you got an economy like that of China's....I guess you have room to talk (and show off)
- explnx, on 04/27/2009, -4/+8The bubbly one looks a lot better in person. It was all transparent and blue, not grey like in the picture. At least it was blue when I saw it a year ago, maybe the picture is correct and the thing is messed up by the smog since then.
- fabriciom, on 01/22/2008, -3/+7hmm I wonder where did they copy it from....
- secrity, on 01/22/2008, -1/+5It doesn't matter who designed it, the steel band building is butt ugly.
- itsHef, on 01/22/2008, -1/+5Doesn't look like CGI so much as...uhh...I dunno what.
- inactive, on 01/22/2008, -3/+7Seconded.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4It is blue, but when I visited it, it was grey from a distance due to the pollution.
- Dustmuffins, on 01/22/2008, -1/+5Superman did it for them, dumbass.
- inactive, on 01/22/2008, -3/+7Took them that many years and all they came up with was that? They should be banned from ever holding the Olympics again.
- TheSaladMan, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3It used to be that as you were driving/walking towards the pier in Bournemouth you got an amazing view of the coastline and the sea, now this massive building blocks your view iz sad, there was even a show about it.
- inactive, on 01/22/2008, -2/+5But it was designed by some westerners....
- blinktude, on 01/22/2008, -2/+5hopefully it doesn't have the build quality of those Chinese cars.
- dualaudi, on 01/22/2008, -3/+6So ugly.. did they just say, hey i got some extra steel lying around here that you can toss on top of your structure?
- smrekar, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3FOG would be proud. But I guess this beats him designing with Styrofoam cups.
- Versh, on 01/22/2008, -1/+4Agreed. The structures are using new materials in never-before-attempted designs that are functional and aesthetically appealing. If it turns out as well as in that concept art, then yes, they'll have a memorable, beautifully austere set of stadiums.
All you haters need some art education before you even to attempt to have a qualifying opinion: the general public panned Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright at first... - beejohnStone, on 01/22/2008, -6/+9as an architecture student, who has been looking at these projects since the conceptual stages these both have been phenomenal feats of architecture engineering and aesthetics. the Bejing national stadium is the best depiction of chaos and happenstance in a structure that is anything but chaos and happenstance.
P.S. if your just looking to bash china don't bash the stadium it was designed by a western architecture firm.
a true piece of sculpture and architecture in Bejing The CCTV building
http://globalmoxie.com/bm~pix/cctv2~s600x600.jpg - DeathAngel0125, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3Yeah, sometimes an architect has to design what the customer wants, not what the architect wants.
- tripstreet, on 01/23/2008, -0/+2that's not racism, that's xenophobia
/new zealand accent - h2g242, on 01/22/2008, -5/+7All these negative comments, I dont understand it. Ok yea Beijing was the wrong place to have the olympics, and like every other country theyre still behind on their building schedules, but these are amazing looking. Would you rather just have another boring Olympic stadium circa the Braves stadium now? And the bubbles idea, especially if you see some of the artists mockups http://www.tropolism.com/watercube_027_m.jpg , this is going to be great.
- Lionhart, on 01/22/2008, -2/+4Okay so I had to look that up to see what you were talking about... but this IMAX looks just fine.. What are you complaining about?
- mrhaines, on 01/22/2008, -0/+2Man, it just looks like they are trying too hard. We get it China, you aren't a poor country anymore. Too bad 90% of your population still is. If there is anything to boycott this century, this is it.
- CrimsonBlur, on 01/22/2008, -4/+6A big breakthrough? Are you sure? The forms are interesting, but to say they're any kind of architectural engineering breakthrough is really pushing it. If you want to see forms that are really hard to design and implement, check out something like the EMP in Seattle: http://images.google.com/images?q=experience+music ...
- secrity, on 01/22/2008, -2/+4It doesn't matter who designed it, it is still ugly.
