- JesusIsSatan, on 10/12/2007, -9/+380I did this with my hamster habitat once, but the hamsters drowned.
- john570, on 10/12/2007, -3/+116Really nice but I would hate to have to clean it.
- unicornhunter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+86That would also give the housecat something to do all day besides lay around.
- ht70, on 10/12/2007, -1/+71It's a total trick. The entire building is upside down. They nailed the furniture to the ceiling and strapped the folks down in their chairs.
- Starship, on 10/12/2007, -1/+68actually, the bottom tanks would not have to be sealed ....
but they would all to have at the same level. the tubes connecting the tanks would have to be suction filled, .... sucking the air out pulls the water in .. the same way you can put your finger over the end of a straw and then lift it out and have it full of juice or whatever you are drinking ...
gravity will keep the overall level of the water in connected tanks the same, regardless of the water in the tubes connecting them, HOWEVER, if you were to spring a leak somewhere in the tubes, allowing air to enter, the water would flow out.
go to your sink, fill it up, place a glass in the sink, lay it down, .. so it is full of water, then invert it, so it's upside down, lift the glass out of the sink without passing the water level, .. the glass stays full ... lift it a little more, and SPLASH, all the water is gone .... same principle ..
my only question is does he have a valve at the top to suck the air out (and suck the water up at the same time...)
i have the same principle in my water cooling system in my computer ...... - anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+42there was a video on digg a couple of weeks ago that showed how to make this work.
Research rocks!
THE MORE YOU KNOW! - PeterBassett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41I find it amazing when people with a low IQ shout FAKE! Have any of you ever heard of a syphon? Look it up, knowledge is your friend.
- crilen007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37Yea, seems like all the people calling out "fake" are just un-educated. Or they never bathed as a kid.
- PeterBassett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36You are as dumb as a bag of hammers.
- pushmouse, on 10/12/2007, -4/+37Magnetic tank cleaners. You can get them for any aquarium.
- anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Peter, be nice to hammers
- anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28so now there are fish in my internets! Thanks buddy!
- ximinez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25The original site is http://www.fishhighway.com/, but it looks like the domain just expired. However, the Internet Archive has a good cache, including photos and a FAQ. http://web.archive.org/web/20060529015518/http://www.fishighway.com/
No digg, since the linked page didn't include any credits for the originals, or any explanations... - PimpinOnWelfare, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26But it just did?
- mikesbaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24this is NOT fake:
its amazing how many people don't understand water
this is a much simpler version. and no the tanks are not sealed. you can see that clearly at 41 seconds.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxMRqZ9dUx8 - Shawnosaurus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22I don't believe it is fake. I saw this same home on one of those "wacky houses" shows that are always on HGTV.
- spect3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19There is the internets flowing between the tanks!
- tdhetrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1832ft that is the height any water column can be maintained (by vacuum) at sea level. any taller and the column separates and pulls a vacuum. (sp) The problem he will have and from the pictures it looks like is happening is that air will always be coming out of solution and collecting at the top, sooner or later the water will not be deep enough for the fish and a vacuum pump will be needed to pull the air out, which is most likely the way they got the watter up there in the first place. He also might risk the water at the top having a very low level of dissolved oxygen, this would make the fish lethargic.
- aplusbi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Thank god I don't waste my time building aquariums. If I did, how would I be able to watch TV all day?
- thespiff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Isn't that what the damn pictures are for? What do you want, a guided tour of the place?
- filmbandit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17magnetic tank cleaning would still be a huge pain in the butt. also -- can you imagine the mess of losing the vacuum between the tube and the tanks. impressive but too perilous imo.
- bemenaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Wow, that is nice. I have been building smaller scale version of aquariums like that since I was 13. A project about that size was going to be the next one I build. Very nice indeed.
Cleaning wouldn't necessarily be too bad, enough placo's in there, and they'll keep it clean. - kurtu5, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16People need more to study more science and critical thinking.
- kurtu5, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15@talan64 - you need to remind yourself of siphons. You don't need to seal the tanks.
- Tollboi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13@ foxhaze
I think you have to much free time, your the one griefing extraordinary thinkers for doing amazing things. When did this mentality come about for making fun of people who think creatively. When you were in school ( you may still be ) did you give the person that gets straight A's crap by saying "geez, way to much free time because you got all A's" - Prodigal19, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13not necessarily.
If you have a cup full of water and place it upside down in water, the water in the cup wont leave the cup because theres no way for air to get into the cup.
I'm guessing the way they have it set up works basically the same way. - Double-Z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Sorry, but you are completely wrong. it can, and does work.
- ben51959, on 10/12/2007, -8/+20Haha! Did you miss 3rd grade science experiments?
- maffiou, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Are these the internets pipes ?
- dcmjzero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12it is not fake. but it would be hard to do.
for those of you who think it is fake:
1. take a cup and completely submerge it in water.
2. bring the bottom of the cup above water while keeping the top of the cup below the water.
3. check and see that the cup is still filled with water, even though it is above the water line.
this works because air cannot get into the tube to replace the water, so the vacuum keeps it up there. just like you can bring air under water, you can bring water into the air. - alstewart73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This isn't in a house. It's in a restaurant.
- crysys, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Yea, it's Intelligent Suction Theory. Don't let the public schools tell you otherwise! They totally try to screw god out of all his ideas.
- kevinarth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@mtwoar, the snipe at the end is for two reasons. First of all, the solution is common sense to most. Second, for those for whom the solution isn't common sense, all they had to do was read the comments to see that the question has been answered multiple times already. Why is it necessary to repeat the same answer to the same question so many times? Do you people not read the comments before inserting your wisdom?
Thats why the snipe.
Some say there's no such thing as a dumb question. I disagree. The only dumb question is the question that's already been asked and answered half a dozen times and it's right in front of your face.
/end rant/ - Edam, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16Fake or not, it's ugly.
- CedEx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Well, you see, there is this great power in the sky, and this being wills the water to stay in the tube, just like how this being wills humans to be stuck to the ground, and allows birds to float in the air. Simple really.
- virologydustin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I think our educational system has failed. An easy experiment for the concept:
1. Fill a sink with water.
2. Take a clear drinking glass.
3. Submerge the drinking glass in the water so that it fills up.
4. Turn the drinking glass upside down.
5. Lift the drinking glass out of the water, but leave the opening slightly below the surface.
6. The drinking glass will still be full of water. - york2600, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8For those who say it's fake. It's not. HGTV. He used a brush connected with magnets to clean the entire thing by sliding the magnet along the outside. Anyone with a good sized tank we'll seen one of these before. It's gotta take a while though.
- achoo5000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Atmospheric pressure can support a column of water 32 feet high.
It's just one of those things you know when you study science. But of course it's not hard to calculate. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I have seen this in a coffee shop. Not the one in the pics, but one in Michigan. This is completely factual.
For those who do not believe me, get off of digg and go experience the world around you. - click170, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The physics behind something like this are in fact remarkably simple. The only reason the water does not flow out of the two tanks is because both tubes are completely sealed. Think of it this way. In order for the water to rush out of the tube and down into the tanks, there would have to be a point for air to enter the tube. Because air cannot enter the tube, the water cannot flow down into the tanks, and does not flow out onto the floor making all your socks all disgustingly squishy.
For those of you who would try to tell me that air can enter from the bottom of both tubes.... you seem to have missed the part about both ends of the tube being submerged. Please, go back and finish your high school education. - AnotherBrian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Re: fasdfa
You just run one pump/filter from one tank to the other instead of a pump/filter in each tank. The water then gets pumped through the tube. - mtwoar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@Ghstfce
Why the snipe at the end? Intellex was asking a simple question, and you answered it rather intelligently until you added your little ferret comment. - Klowner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's like a skybridge for fish! Now all we need is a reverse scuba suit for the fish.
- jlunski, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@talan64 - What are you talking about? The tubes are clearly below the water level in the tanks, plus look at the refraction of the items on the wall in a couple of the pics, yeah it is probably possible to reproduce in PS but I think this is real.
- greenshark88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They spell it with a K cause they're hardkore.
- tHePeOPle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8It's not a big truck.
- brianbowden, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Its simple. Its the same concept as drinking through a straw. Do you all have to seal the top of the glass you're drinking out of to get your favorite beverage into your mouth. The atmospheric pressure is greater than the pressure inside the tube thus "pushing" the liquid through the tubes (or straw as in the analogy).
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5While the pleco comment is true to an extent, i think you would be hard pressed to get one to clean that entire "highway".
I'd imagine you would have to NOT feed it so that it went far enough from its main dwelling.
In my experience plecos can be rather timid and the see throughness of those tubes and the public space would be sort of unsettling, and it may stay away completely.
This fish tank highway connection is interesting, but i can see there being problems with chemical balances and perhaps a lack of O2 in the middle of the highway. This is also potentially a great way for disease to srpead (god forbid) - mikesbaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5its amazing how many people don't understand water

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxMRqZ9dUx8 - silicon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5you wouldn't have to worry about cleaning algae if you got a good algae-eating fish like a ribber lipped pleco or any of the plecostomus family.
