You freaking racist ;P - NGNR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I believe it uses the optical phenomenon of TOTAL INTERNAL REFLECTION to make the water appear as if colour was added to it.
Basically, the incident light (from LED's) is reflected within the laminar flow (low Reynold's number) of the medium (water) and thus seems to be 'captured' within the water, giving it than the colour provided by the light.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_internal_reflection - Christophercles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a fantastic idea. What I'd like to see though is the light based on the actual temperature of the water, rather than what which temperature of water is turned on. Just for the kind of people who turn on the hot water for a long time, and then the next person who comes along gets a hand full of hot water because it wasnt drained out.
- Advenger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What ever happened to, you know, using your HAND and testing the temperature? I don't mean to be a killjoy here, but really. If you turn the H nob and only the H nob, I can almost grantee you it's gonna be hot.
- bigmac123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Obviously that looks very nice, and is functional. However, I must say that this might also be good for children. I'm sure that you could make a slip on item that changes color based on temperature. Aquariums have those temperature things that don't need power.
- senseigmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0seen one where the knobs and spout change color, but this is also sweet
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is sweet. I want one.
- vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what if the water pressure in your house goes crazy? like a bubble or it spikes high. you would be very wet...
- Eve7698, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, I saw this on engadget a while back too, but I'll digg
- dotuplink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0man... i how much does it cost?!?!?!!??!?!
- *Ica*, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0TAP.....Its a friggin tap :)
Dugg nontheless. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is sooooo old.... i even saw it in a house in CANADA like 2 years ago (i'm a canadian, makes it O.K.) still awesome though
digg - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, that is cool.
- TheQwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too cool. I remember doing something similar with a flashlight and a tin can with a hole in it when I was a kid... cool to see a practical use come out of something so simple :)
dugg - sandfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just recently watched a random TV show at a friends house the other day, and they were doing an interview with some dude who create color changing tile (depending on temperature). Wish I could remember what his product was called... maybe color changing tile?? I dunno.
Pretty cool in either case. - usafkisser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Christophercles: Where do you get the idea that the LEDs respond to the open status of the water valves, instead of the actual temperature of the water? I read the available information a few times, and I still think the faucet actively monitors the water temp, and the LEDs show the realtime temperature. Otherwise, this would be all show, no function.
- Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want one.
- link470, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thats pretty sweet
- Nullifidian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To me it just looks artsy fartsy and serves no real deep purpose other than to get your hands wet in a very artsy way.
If you going to use a faucet then your intentions are to get your hands wet. Do what everyone else does and put your finger under the water to test the temp. - Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0title made me think..."Why do I want to wash myself with colored water?"
but that is a beautiful faucet - wasborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i saw this, or something like it, awhile ago...
it still looks cool
dugg - Daikun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I used to just wait till I saw steam, which was hard to see. Or put my hand in to test it, which can be a bit irritating at times.
But now I won't have to anymore. :P
dugg - vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0very cool but not practical... people just try to find excuses for cool things... (i am one of them) but cmon.
dugg though - dotuplink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0man... how much does it cost?!?!?!!??!?!*

I'd say, because the controls are actually in the faucet, and appear to be digital/buttony, it would base itself on the ratio of the open-ness of the hot:cold water valves. Sure, it wouldn't be exact, but relative measurements would be instant, whereas thermometers, etc.. take too long to respond to temperature, and anyway, it's colour, so it's subjective. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>> i dont want to be electrocuted when washing my hands
LEDs use a very low voltage. Even if you WERE electrocuted, (watertight designs in taps are TOUGH), it would be akin to touching both ends of a 1.5v battery. You wouldn't feel anything. - duntuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i like... would definitely make your pad nicer...
also like to know how much and where to buy... - Hoohoonick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks nice, but how would one clean this? If you clean your bathroom twice a week(like we have to here, living with 6 people), you're going to get pretty annoyed with cleaning the hard to reach spots in there.
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The water doesn't change color, it's just the light inside the "little canyon" of the faucet.. you can see once it leaves there, it's back to normal water color.
- andreizilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kind of exotic. If I had an assload of money I would purchase one.
Dugg because colored water is trippy. - donnie_dark0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In the future, there will be lawsuits arising from burn victims of those accustomed to color-coded water getting scalded in hotels by CLEAR water-no matter that the water is clouding the bathroom.
;) Good story, I could see kitchenware and every other gadget following this method. The plate says, "Don't eat it, you'll burn the crap out of your mouth!" - Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Excellent idea. All faucets should do this. I see it becoming common in 5 - 10 years.
- Ixliam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Someone just needs to hack one of these to a normal faucet, and post the mod.
- theonlybigboss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've seen it before, but I'm not a ***** dupe nazi, and i don't scream "old news", this is still kick ass +digg
- Teh_Blogfather, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did anyone notice the death toll jump up? Either that or mass bankruptcy for the person making those cool but ultimately pointless faucet. C'mon, surely the old fashioned "check for steam" is cooler? :-)
- sharedferret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This would be a great addition to a photo darkroom.
- h4lofourt33n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is really cool. Now to find one and put it in my house.
- thefist_of_funk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now if only I knew how much the faucet costs. Hehe now all my guests will be in the washroom instead of somewhere else.
- Qopax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0advenger, it isn't uncommon for my shower water to be cold for quite a while even if only my hot valve is open, so I'd definitely appreciate knowing when to step into the shower and not be frozen to death in winter...
- nevin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, how much would that cost.
- aiwha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow.
Maybe for their next trick they can design a t-shirt that changes color according to heat. - asplodzor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>>>> i dont want to be electrocuted when washing my hands
>>LEDs use a very low voltage. Even if you WERE electrocuted, (watertight >>designs in taps are TOUGH), it would be akin to touching both ends of a >>1.5v battery. You wouldn't feel anything.
That wouldn't be electrocution then... electrocution is defined as "death by electric shock" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrocution - zenghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is awesome...now all i need is a million dollar loft to go with it... :]
- MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It would probably add some flare to my bungalo but I dont think its all that practical. Dugg because its got the coolness.
- FunkyGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Why do I want to wash myself with colored water?"
You freaking racist ;P

LMAO HAHAHAHA - tank45, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Am I the only one who thought Tetris when you saw the faucet? >_
- aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2the title is incorrect. the faucet doesn't change the water's color at all. only the ambiend LED light changes. please correct this post's title
- d38as3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0there seems to be a type-o on my previous post, but its still lane and its a puppetshow for christs sake.
- Christophercles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@usafkisser
I get that impression because basing the colour of the lead on whatever the taps are turned to would be the easiest way to do it, and therefor cheaper, and that's what they'd be looking for if it were to go to sale. - JRMillion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0This was on engadget a few months ago.
