- kplo, on 10/29/2009, -1/+74Kind of cool to see the process the whole way through. Deciding between some of those image options must've been tough.

- OverDriven, on 10/30/2009, -0/+45You never do work for a potential client until you have a signed contract and a deposit. Otherwise you're just risking the company stealing your work. You should have a good enough portfolio to let the client know if you are right for the job or not based on past work.
Trust me...I've made plenty such mistakes along the way though. I now run a marketing design business. The first year was a learning experience. - serif69, on 10/30/2009, -0/+37His first mistake was doing work on spec.

- Breenn, on 10/30/2009, -1/+20It seems in the end they didn't go for the blue/light-blue variation and instead went with just one shade.
- bossgalaga, on 10/30/2009, -1/+20I feel like such a sucker, but I'd buy it.
- OverDriven, on 10/30/2009, -1/+18You've really got to get over yourself and your artistic ego when working in this business. I tell clients not to hold back. If they think it sucks, I hope they would tell me so. That is the only way I can ensure that I make the client happy in the end. A red sharpie? Pshhht. Tell your teacher to grow some thicker skin.
- steviaextract, on 10/30/2009, -4/+21FTA: "(your knowledge of color theory is vital here)."
Why would you ever suppose yellow would be a good idea for a bottled water company? You don't have to know much about color theory to associate water with the color blue and urine with the color yellow.
Also, while it's not a bad logo, and maybe I'm not versed enough in "color theory," but wtf is a "leaf of water?" - Shawn10000, on 10/30/2009, -0/+16Those are pictures of the roughs. If you actually look at the final version with the logo on the water bottle you can see it is in blue. Personally as a designer doing a logo in blue to associate water would not be my first concern. It is just something that is associated too much with water. I think the leaf thing kind of makes sense because it is representing a modern/ forward thinking company who care about the environment, and in nature leaves collect water. It is all part of the design process.
- jman583, on 10/30/2009, -2/+17What about the Pepsi gravitational field?

- stockwitch, on 10/29/2009, -1/+14I agree - great to see the process. Nice find.
- ninzo09, on 10/30/2009, -0/+13wow, you're like http//lmgtfy.com except i don't even have to ask
- MrFisty, on 10/30/2009, -1/+14I use a blue sharpie. But it's important to remember that people, particularly art directors and creative directors, are just trying to get the best result for the client. When/if ***** hits the fan, the client goes after them, not you.
My job largely involves using a sharpie to make corrections and notes on the creative team's designs and concepts. I don't do this to be a jerk, I do this to make sure what we present to client fits the brief and has the best chance of being accepted.
There are jerks, don't get me wrong, but most of us are just doing our jobs. - irishjays, on 10/30/2009, -1/+13Contracts SAVE relationships, and most importantly friendships. If someone tells you, "I don't want a contact because you're good for it and I trust you," punch them in the face, and say, "Did you see that coming? If we had a contract you would have." Friends? As OverDriven will tell you, no contract = someone eventually throwing a punch you weren't expecting. (Figuratively, I should specify)
I did a Web client, I did the design, and he wanted me to do hosting to save him money. I backed up everything and started on his fresh new site. Forgot to put anything about his "OLD" files on the contract, you know, that I wasn't supporting his lack of backups. Well he blamed my company for the "Loss" of his e-mails the past 2 years which his entire company left on the server. Sure I had the backup, but I had to suddenly support his entire staff's e-mail transfers and not get paid for it to save the relationship. They still owe my $675. - geoboy, on 10/30/2009, -0/+10"Bottled Water requires up to 2000 times more energy to deliver then Vero Water"
The company needs to hire themselves a grammar nazi. - rootlake, on 10/30/2009, -0/+10Of course, the new Pepsi logo designer didn't imagine *this* perspective:

Gravity = mass = fat.. - OverDriven, on 10/30/2009, -0/+9Pretty sure that was a hoax, as the first link you posted mentions. If it's not, then it's absolutely ridiculous.
- drsjlazar, on 10/30/2009, -4/+13"eco-friendly bottled water alternative"
"at the point of use"
“environmentally conscious”
and then...
"the bottle is being manufactured in China"
:\ - AmazingA, on 10/30/2009, -0/+9It's pretty funny to google "OGC" and see which companies unknowingly use that as their initials. Like the Open Geospatial Consortium, hahaha.
http://www.google.com/#hl=en&source=hp&q=% ... - JDLamb88, on 10/30/2009, -2/+10My digital art teacher once went to present his final product to a company, and his competition showed up with a big bound book detailing how they came to their design and they instantly won the bid.
- HeizeusX, on 10/30/2009, -1/+8Artists use Illustrator.
- zip000, on 10/30/2009, -0/+7The amount of work that went into that is amazing.

- Jektal, on 10/30/2009, -0/+6Puppies and kittens don't need a marketing department
- rootlake, on 10/30/2009, -0/+6Here's another nice logo design walkthrough, from idea to sketch to several variations:
http://www.ideabook.com/tutorials/logo_design/step ... - ThantiK, on 10/30/2009, -0/+5I hope they chose the top one. Primarily because a "busier" graphic doesn't mean it's the better one. The bottom one doesn't portray anything about a gateway, and it looks like it's just meant to be "fast"...
Art isn't something that's supposed to be fast, it's meant to be enjoyed. So yeah...I hope to god yours isn't the bottom one because it's a ***** design for an art gateway. - kiubo, on 10/30/2009, -4/+9Logo design should not be artistic expression. At the most, minimally so.
By the way, Design /= Art.
For the record I'm a designer. - inactive, on 10/30/2009, -0/+5I agree, a good logo is simple and communicates a message and can work for any situation
I get annoyed by all these frilly gradient 3d logos that won't work in one-color on a fax job and are more about being gimmicky than something that will last as a company's identity for 30 years or more. - d2cole, on 10/30/2009, -0/+4Now i want a bottle of water...
Thank goodness that he wasn't creating a logo design for puppies or my roommate would be pissed! - soil, on 10/30/2009, -0/+4Cheap artists use Inkscape.
- holygram, on 10/30/2009, -0/+4Ever notice that the white stripe is smaller on the diet pepsi logo?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/4 ... - Zarthia, on 10/30/2009, -0/+4Very nice article. good find :)
- mparker21311, on 10/30/2009, -0/+4Designers getting over themselves is the hardest part of the job. When someone criticizes my work it almost feels like they're telling me that my child is a spoiled brat. I am most certainly biased towards my designs.
- supguy, on 10/30/2009, -0/+4Urban Dictionary: ogc
ogc - 8 definitions - Referring to a male masturbating. (tilt your head to the left to see the picture)
bahahahah. Dunno which one was made first, but it pays to Google potential names and acronyms before using them. - driftwood07, on 10/30/2009, -0/+4yea i found that pretty damn interesting, especially how it looked at the golden ratio. thanks for posting.
- holygram, on 10/30/2009, -0/+4Eh, I don't think it is quite at Comic Sans or Papyrus level.
- Pasaris, on 10/30/2009, -0/+3It's called presenting your rationale. It works.
- Ascus, on 10/30/2009, -1/+4Agree, looks like "ero" as in "erotic", and the leaves are in a "fertility" arrangement. The artist threw in a couple subliminal messages for free.
I would say the author of the blog was not trained in color theory or icon theory. But inadvertently its not a bad logo; erotic sells to the guys and fertility sells to the ladies.
In commercial art you always have to know WHY something looks good initially, otherwise you can inadvertently give a message unintended. Many experienced graphic designers have stories have horror stories to tell. Like the recent "OGC" logo. - starkraving, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3They probably did that to save money. With the grey in there as well it would have been 3 colors to print it, versus just 2 without the second shade of blue. Of course they could have tried to screen the lighter blue out of dot-tones, but light dot tones are incredibly hard to keep open with an even tone, so that would have meant slowing down the printing and still would have cost more. I worked as a pre-press designer for a food/beverage labeling company for 8 years, and this is exactly the kind of compromising I had to face every day.
- Gregb11385, on 10/30/2009, -0/+2My friend who's a graphic/website designer complains about the same thing...hehe.
- schmokedat, on 10/30/2009, -0/+2brilliant!
- OverDriven, on 10/30/2009, -1/+3Good article for those just starting off in the logo design biz. It's important to note that this is not the only way though. I have my own techniques, as does any artist. The one given in this article is definitely a good foundation to start from though. I really like that he went the extra step of rendering the final product. That's the kind of thing that will get you referrals. For others interested in learning how to do that, check out Blender...it's a great free 3D modeling and rendering suite.
- siclik, on 10/30/2009, -0/+2Wow - read the case studies on that website. Towards the bottom, they mention a hotel that charges $8/bottle of water.
If I'm going to drop $8 on a drink, it better get me tipsy (and even then, meh.) - RunningboardV2, on 10/30/2009, -0/+2Logo design should be whatever it needs to be to be a successful design..
I'm a designer too what's up. - irishjays, on 10/30/2009, -0/+2Disagree, in a bad economy, people are looking for good art, and low cost. It's Bad to be an agency right now.
- Surkit, on 10/30/2009, -0/+2yep direct from the institute of "logo making"
/s - Beonarri, on 10/30/2009, -0/+2Wow, I didn't mean to troll and insult Art Directors. I was just pointing that the hardest parts are meeting the demands of someone else and relating an anecdote.
