Ever heard of the roaring twenties ? Where every bizarre/crazy/extravagant project like this was widely acclaimed ? You know, just before 1929 and the WWII ?
Anyway, good luck to the hovering team.

Quote from site:
"well this is actually outdoors. it’s called the stadtlounge (city lounge) and it’s situated in the centre of st.gallen in switzerland"
"this ‘look’ was the result of a design competition to create a ‘public living room’ in the financial district of the area and since 2005 it has stayed, the red ‘carpet’ seemingly flowing over all furniture, roads and even some fake cars littered around the streets.
if only all local governments were this adventurous." - MedHead, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Looks interesting, but... eh, a bit stupid, too.

- phantom_mullet, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9I agree. Or better, Digg should develop an algorithm to tell if a particular story is going to be popular then, right before promoting it to the front page, they should create a mirror or pass something along to Duggmirror to have them mirror a site.
I'm sure Digg could figure out how to do this. Also, in order to not steal page hits from sites, they could program Digg to detect when a site is dugg to death and switch the link over to the mirror.
Seems like a decent idea to me...but what do I know?- yoadrian, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1you know` nothing

- CrimsonBlur, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Sucks for the person that has to vacuum that place! Plus, what do they do when it rains? Soggy carpet, ech.
- ibone, on 10/10/2007, -10/+3lol @ "centre"
- jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -18/+6what do they think this place is? Britain? Spell it American or get the F*ck off this site.
- KD5VMO, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6This is a perfect example of blind nationalism. You sir, are an ass. Love the place in the Picts tho
- camtech, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wow, I'm American as most of the people are here, but WHO CARES. They spell it one way, we spell it another. Both understand either ways. Get over it.
- PhonicUK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14'Centre' = British spelling of American 'Center'
- podgey22, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6*'Centre' = Correct spelling
- stormbine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Canadians use it as well.

Buried, lame. - Sparkster185, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21I feel bad for the guy who forgot to move his car.
- t2t2, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3I still think i like Tallinn old town more...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Tallin-markt.jpg- f00xx0riz3r, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2I like my buildings straight.
- kindrobot, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1...like your men. Why is that getting dugg down, it's lovely!
- f00xx0riz3r, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2I like my buildings straight.
- billizm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Carpet gets nasty when it gets rained on. Wonder how they handle that.
- theblindman2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Shampoo
- 1000feetper2nd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I'm sure its outdoor carpet (mostly plastic-designed for use on open decks, patios) or astroturf.
- kindrobot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I was hoping for a little more detailed info.
- Retrospekt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Probably another reason why Switzerland was rated best country to live in.
- abxy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I've been talking to this chick online that lives in Switzerland for some time now. I'm going to visit her in November. Perhaps I should consider marrying her so I can get permanent residency there. Definitely seems like a nice place to live.
- hoovcluck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Switzerland? That's precious.
- likeyehokwhatev, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5ummm... ugly?
- BransonLAN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I would maybe DIGG more stuff if they sites wouldn't go down so darn fast.
- ayeroxor, on 10/10/2007, -9/+4"An Incredible City Centre (Photos)"
What's with the French spelling of 'center' in the middle of an English phrase?
Question to Europeans (except the French): Do you pronounce it "SON-truh"? If you don't pronounce it in the French manner, why spell it that way?- HondaWang, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7It's the proper way to spell "center". How it was originally spelled in proper English.
- ayeroxor, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Um, No. It's how it was originally spelled when the Normans conquered your ass. It's time to let go.
- ayeroxor, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Um, No. It's how it was originally spelled when the Normans conquered your ass. It's time to let go.
- Xolo, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Are you serious? That IS the correct spelling of the word in English. It seems American phonetics may be the culprit here.
Admittedly, I am a bit of an anglophile, at least with respect to the spelling of words.
P.S. I logged in just to disagree with your moronic statement. - imaginarycircus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Plus this place is in Switzerland where they speak, you know, French among other languages that are not English.
- bushcat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Dugg down for being fik without due care and attention. And is it necessary to comment on every single item?
- Protoman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Anglais provenu dans England. Ils connaitent plus..
- HondaWang, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7It's the proper way to spell "center". How it was originally spelled in proper English.
- brfitzp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2They must go through a lot of vacuum bags, eh?
- cablefish, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4wish it was shag carpet....
- dgtljunglist, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1...I can't imagine the smell after it rains.
- DarkReign16, on 10/10/2007, -5/+5I wonder how much public money they spent on a ***** giant unnecessary outdoor living room. Plus, it's ugly as hell.
- univerio, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Dugg for spelling centre the proper way.
- Protoman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Hear hear!
- Protoman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Whistler Village anyone?
http://i.rentalo.com/p5/84435/4875925l.jpg - bradbaxter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wow... this is so amazing. Red carpet. Wow. It's carpet. And it's red. Amazing. I can't get over how red it is. Again: wow.
- bashfulczar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I was just in St. Gallen last year for 3 months and didn't see this damnit!
- Midnitte, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0wow switzerland sure has some money to spare.
I wonder what the carpet is made out of, if it rained it would sort of be uncomfortable/ruined if made out of normal materials - zardoz73, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Ah, to be Swiss: you and all your neighbors have so much money you don't know what to do with it. So you turn downtown into an art project. Must be nice.
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Its probably some sort of plasticy carpet, similar to astroturf, but softer, or something like that.
- ctrlaltphreak, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Anyone find it funny that British people generally know the American and English spelling of different words but Americans only know their own!
- daunity, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I know the difference, and I'm American. It might be somehow related to the huge difference in population between the UK and US (some 239,000,000 of a difference). If it was the reverse and the United Kingdom had a population of over 300,000,000 I'm pretty sure most Americans would know the difference.
- ki85squared, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3A much more incredible city center: http://www.citycenter.com/
- FlohEinstein, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That's the city of St.Gallen, but this was quite a while ago... In the year 2005 if I'm not mistaken. There's nothing left now.
- nalloraeven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0nothing left? its exactly as shown on the pics. why should nothing be left of?
- nalloraeven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0nothing left? its exactly as shown on the pics. why should nothing be left of?
- nalloraeven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1i actually do live here. to answer the two most frequent questions:
1. No its actually very seldom messy at all. I guess the clean it pretty often, but people really tend to use the waste bins in the area.
2. Its not a carpet really, but the kind of stuff you've got on sports grounds. like 100m running... Therefore rain is no problem. Only problems are car tires which leave black marks.
3. It was not public funding, but the "raiffeisen" bank which has its national headquarters here. All the buildings you see in the bg are actually bank buildings. - pnoyprd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0That's so cool, very creative. Hard to grasp the idea that it's outdoors.
- nishimori, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Wow
