Yay, then they'd just reproduce more, and be starving again. You can't solve a starving population by giving them food. History has shown time and time again that if you give starving people food, their population just expands and then you have *more* starving people. Food + birth control is what it takes. - iamshades, on 10/11/2007, -69/+4at first i thought it was one big isle.

While I agree with you in General in the case of Darfur it doesn't apply, not only are the people there starving they are being massacred, they have significant negative population growth that food alone won't change. - sjl127, on 10/11/2007, -18/+3Condoms?

Yay, then they'd just reproduce more, and be starving again. You can't solve a starving population by giving them food. History has shown time and time again that if you give starving people food, their population just expands and then you have *more* starving people. Food + birth control is what it takes.
And from those new people come new workers to grow more food. Everytime you plant a seed it grows into a fruit containing many seeds. You eat that fruit and plant its seeds, and from those seeds come more fruits containing more seeds. All you have to do is give the starving people seeds and suitable soil and they can survive forever. Soil doesn't get used up (although it takes time for its nutrients to replenish, I think) and the seeds produce more seeds. There is probably some scientific term for this. The only way to have a problem arise from this is:
1. Something kills your food (global warming etc)
2. You are reproducing faster than your food is.
The cause of most of our starving population is the lack of conditions suitable to grow things. Of course everything I've just said applies only to grown food, and not meat. - NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -10/+2is that... is that Michel More staring at the Ragu? LOL

I don't think it's healthy for humans to have that many vibrant colors jumping out at them. Maybe excessive marketing/advertising is what's causing the increases in Autism and the like.
In mother nature, you only see reds, yellows and deep blues as CAUTION!/ALERT (coral snake anyone?). Something just tells me that all these colors are screwing with peoples brains and making people suffer from ADD. - grauelkimchee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@ raymiester...they're not starving, they're getting killed

- chris8535, on 10/11/2007, -13/+3This is the perfect example of how even amoung a mass number of internet citizens not even ONE is educated enough to know this is a rip off of a Gurzky photograph called 99c. This isnt even a good rip off of the photo, the original is much better and of course many many many times higher resolution. I wish Digg people had a more rounded education than just things involving Wii, linux, obscure canidates, macs and paris hilton.
- pinchduck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5@gryffydd,
The people in Darfur aren't starving due to lack of food, they are starving because that is the policy of their genocidal government. What the people in Darfur need is relief from an oppressive and murderous regime. Pithy comments about the poor breading out of control are ignorant. - skankyBacon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3@Chris8535
I bet most of us go "hey cool picture" then move on. I don't think we care who made a similar picture first, or who even took this one for that matter. And I'm sure many people here are educated on things you know nothing about, so just because you might know your photography doesn't mean anyone who doesn't isn't well-rounded or educated. - pinchduck, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2@gryffydd,
The people in Darfur aren't starving due to lack of food, they are starving because it is the policy of their genocidal government to force them to starve. What the people in Darfur need is relief from an oppressive and murderous regime. Pithy comments about the poor breeding out of control due to too much food are ignorant. In fact, quite the opposite happens when people suddenly find themselves prosperous: The birth rate goes down as the waistlines expand. Our form of government and our economic system make the abundance depicted possible. Hate, ignorance, and apathy make the atrocity in Darfur possible. I weep for the people over there, and consider myself damned lucky to have been born in a decent country. - minipri, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6@Chris8538

How ridiculous - birth control? Jobs. That's what you need to save a starving country - put everyone to work, and pay them enough to support a family. You can help an entire community by building one factory or starting one farm. That's why technoserve is my "charity" of choice: http://www.technoserve.org/ - avatarpalin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The products... they ... they follow you around the room...
- whyteeford, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2I sincerely apologize for the comment abuse, but seriously...gmprunner made a simple, close ended comment. Yet, for some reason, there are 50+ replies to it. What in the hell are you replying to? I can count probably 3 "replies" that have anything to do with what he said, otherwise the rest are their own statements and should be their own comments. When it gets to having to use "@[insert name]", you should know you've ***** up. Start a new comment line, please; don't be a douche.
- inkrambles, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2First, its a fantastic photograph. I can tell you exactly why it is so eye catching. It has a foreground, a mid ground and a background that is clear. It also has linear perspective. Achieving a strong mid ground is one of the hardest things an artist can do. I know. I am an artist. Foreground and background are easy compared to that mid transition.
The linear perspective is beautiful and delicate with all the lines that go to a vanishing point. It is so subtle that it is picked up by the subconscious part of the mind first. There are design conventions that automatically appeal to the human senses. This photograph has such appeal.
When a photograph or a painting or a sculpture has a type of beauty and appeal to it that actually causes us to get a rush of excitement and inner joy, it is very well done. It has artistic magic.
I think this photograph is rare and wonderful from an artistic standpoint.

Also if you look closely to the left of that sign near the top right side it looks like there is a head and shoulders of a person, so that might be 10 even. - homeagain1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Also if you look at the end of the top right aisle it looks like a person with a red jacket.

- jonnyboyca, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9This reminds me of what it looks like at Long Drug Store's when I worked there sitting up in the "lookout" one way mirrors they have lining the entire store. Yes.. Longs Drugs is always watching you...

~jon - TomT223, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2If you have ever been in the back of a post office, they have the same thing. Employees sorting mail never know if someone is watching them or not.
- leetdood, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9That picture looks like it'd be an awesome counterstrike map...
- PhantomZmoove, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Yeah except that now making video game maps out of real places is almost criminal.
- craftyshrew, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I remember my first job was at a brand new grocery store. Walking the isles of a perfectly faced store is mesmerizing...Then the doors open...
- Elliuotatar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I was in CVS once, standing too close to the soda fridge at the back of the store trying to decide what to get. They too have those two way mirrors. Where I was standing below the mirrors they couldn't see me and after a few moments someone went on the intercom and said "camera on aisle 3 please", which was where I was. That pissed me off, because I resent the constant surveillance and bag searches we're subjected to these days in stores, so I just left without buying anything.
- hexydes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@Elliuotatar: "That pissed me off, because I resent the constant surveillance and bag searches we're subjected to these days in stores, so I just left without buying anything."
Then perhaps you should blame the people that steal items from the grocery stores. Unlike "stealing" music on the Internet, this actually is real theft (tangible loss of physical goods), and the stores have to do something to try to limit the impact it has on their bottom-line. Those people are the real problem in society, because if it weren't for them, then there would not be an excuse for concepts such as "Big Brother". It is explicitly because of these people that we willingly allow our privacy to be limited in some aspects of life.
- jonnyboyca, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9See this picture for an example of the Big Brother mirrors at Longs Drugs..

- socokoolaid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It does have some wallpaper (stereogram) effect to it. I could almost see something in it. I'm pretty sure that is what makes the image so appealing.
- pandastick, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2anyone knows where i could get this in high res?
- Scyth3, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9Are your nearest grocer?
- jkc120, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8@pandastick
igyigyigy's link to the wikipedia article here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Fredmeyer_edit_1.jpg
Has a link to a high(er) res picture:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/49/Fredmeyer_edit_1.jpg - drakia, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8@jkc120
That's actually a different picture... - igyigyigy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2@drakia:
The one on wikipedia is a cropped version of the one submitted to digg, but is at a higher resolution - ahawks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6http://static.flickr.com/17/22725413_ed4fc6a028_o.jpg
With flickr, the sizes are determined by the trailing _(letter) in the URL.
_b for large ("big")
_o for original size
_s for small
_m for medium
You can also take the "22725413" part of the img URL and put it in this url, to get to the profile of the original poster.
http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=RIGHT_HERE&size=o
ie:
http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=22725413&size=o
which has a link at the top to go "Back to the Flickr photo page"
In this case, the photo is from flickr user Unaesthetic.

- sh0rtstop00, on 10/11/2007, -4/+0this photo is the most expensive photo in the world...
- achantra, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24That photo is very reminiscent of the 99cent store photo by Andreas Gursky, who specializes in huge landscape photography.
http://www.photoq.nl/specials.php?reportid=41- uuhclem, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Yes, although I think the Gursky photo was actually a composite of many different angles, this appears to be a semi-straight shot.
- PhillyVu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10the photographer (Lyza) actually gives homage to Andreas Gursky. She knew someone would compare the photo to his style.
I've been to this place. It's big, but the picture makes it feel a lot larger. This is taken from the second floor of the store, kinda like a food court. - anchorboi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4You are right, Gursky typically constructs his works in an extremely meticulous fashion from many shots to create the unreal perspectives that became a trademark of his photography style.
- nemesiscw, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Looks like a Fred Meyer in Redmond, WA right across the street from Target.
- Blarbo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It does look like that Fred Meyer, but the flickr tags says it's in Portland.
- LordStryker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Now if GoogleMaps would only map out my local grocery store.....
- MattMcConaughey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Looks like Manute Bol helmet cam day.

- jayjaykay, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1they are running low on Tidy Cat: Multiple Cat Kitty litter...
- thephosphorbox, on 10/11/2007, -16/+2Interesting in that its taken from a perspective which most of us probably never see in a grocery store unless we climb up the shelves.
- isuisorisuaint, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21DING DING DING!!!! Tell him what he's won, Johnny!!!

- nemesiscw, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0Durrr, posted too late. :/ RIght after the Fred Meyer post.
- dgarallenpoe, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4soon to be a feature photo in adbusters juxtaposed to a pile of starving Bulgarians, or maybe a forest stream.
- JamesWilson, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2@dgarallenpoe (#7085085)
For the uninformed, adbusters rocks!
http://www.adbusters.org - secretwhistle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2JamesW -
That phrase seems a little confusing.
Was that a recommendation for adbusters or something that only the uninformed type find interesting? - JamesWilson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1When I originally made the comment, the parent comment was being buried, I wanted to show support for adbusters and explain to those who may have not heard of them.
- JamesWilson, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2@dgarallenpoe (#7085085)
- Takuro, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Looks like they have no shortage of soda and Skippy peanut butter.
Erm... why is this in the technology section? Because it was taken with a digital camera?- ajchavar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1in design, cause theres no photo section
- Namco, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5How is this in the Technology > Design section?
- logicalnoise, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3plan o gram porn?
- phantom_mullet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+31Because Digg hasn't added a Photos > Grocery Store section yet.
- se7en11, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Because it's the best designed website in the world! Did anyone else notice that this image is not a link to an image, but to index.php in the domain's root dir.
- punchinelli, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Cool picture, but I remember it being a Featured Picture of the Day or whatever on Wikipedia -
Did a minute worth of searching, and found it in the following: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supermarket
Direct link to picture with artist cited: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Fredmeyer_edit_1.jpg- swooshonln, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Did a minute work of comparing, looks like they are different pictures
Just compare cans. (bottom middle, look for the spare where there are no cans, then look in the wikipedia pic, there are cans in that spot) They are NOT the same picture. - Caruthers, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Is it just me or do those Japanese apples in the Wikipedia link look retardedly large?
- swooshonln, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Did a minute work of comparing, looks like they are different pictures

- noopsy, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2The photo is the work of Andreas Gursky and is about 6 feet by 12 feet wide. He's taken other super-sized photos, but the grocery store on is a favorite of mine because of all the detail.
other works via Google Images:
http://tinyurl.com/2o8xmq- anchorboi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6This is NOT a photo from Gursky's "99 cent" diptychon, although the artist has obviously been "inspired" by it.
- noopsy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3:anchorboi
you're absolutely right - not the Gursky. My bad, should've looked more closely.
- bonojerry, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5The image was created with a small aperture, leading to the whole picture being in focus, which is a vision of the area that is better than if you were actually there....there are some aspects of some photographs that provide a vision that is beyond what we would normally see.
One of the most amazing experiences is to stand in front of Brett Weston's Holland Canal. He shot it with an 11x17 view camera, an incredible small aperture, and the print quality is the best....to see the image in person is almost a spiritual experience.
This grocery store image shows that spiritual photographs aren't limited to images of nature OR a grocery store can be nature, too. - samsims, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0cmon...they dont have my favorite snack...
- jimbobaii, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Quite sinister in my view. Everything in its right place, in nice tidy rows. in a nice tidy shop.
Society is obsessive compulsive, I'm sure. - jmousseau44, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0This photo also appeared in an a back issue of Adbusters. It's still a trip.... Consumerism at it's grandest.
- DblTap, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Centerfold for Starvin Marvin.

- jacobed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10If you blur your vision a little, it's like staring into the world's largest crayola box.
- wiirdo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16The cats don't know we stock their food next to their toilet.
- Hockey37, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Except for Ceiling Cat. Ceiling Cat knows and sees all.
