Amazing 3.8 Gigapixel spherical panorama of Yosemite Valley
xrez.com — The site is using google maps to display the whole photo interactively. It's shot from the same spot that Ansel Adams shot the "Monolith". It is so detailed that you can even see a rock climber on the face of Half Dome a mile away! There are 7 of these high res images and some killer time-lapse with DEM integration. Try this on your cinema display!

- jfrankov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the detail on this is pretty off-the-charts. their site says they've printed this photo on a seventeen-foot-long photoroll (or something huge like that). Very slick. Their other pictures are dope too.
- simeonb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What most people don't realize at first is that with most large scale prints, if you look up close there is noise to cover up the loss of resolution (we perceive noise as a more acceptable artifact than straight jagged pixel aliasing), but with this image, even though it is 7 feet tall, if you walk right up to it and stare at a tiny piece, there is still plenty of resolution.
- cenithx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very friggin cool!
- ehanson001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Look for the sunbathers in Boston, the climber on Half Dome, or the truck in the Owens..
- simeonb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Greg Downing, Eric Hanson, and many others put lots of time into this and it looks fantastic. The detail level is way beyond even what other gigapixel images have shown (some have been shot on film and claimed a resolution close to this, but if you go in at 1:1 it is very blurry). There were also lots of technical hurdles, just saving intermediary images became a huge problem to figure out because even the temporary images were way beyond 4 gigs, which not many file formats support.
- leonardteo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This looks unbelievably cool. Great work guys!!! :)
- gradenh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very impressive! Be sure to check out the special effects sequences.
