- carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32Damn Jason, how many different ways can you spell stabilized wrong? :)
Great photos though, would be a good article if you talked about your setup.
Chip- - bairy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Just as a warning, the entire page and images total 14.1mB
There's some fantastic images in there. - aelias, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Link has destablizied
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Hey, kids! Thumbnails aren't just for fingers anymore!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I recommend watching the BBC documentary Planet Earth. They used the latest hi-def gyro cameras mounted on helicopters. Fantastic wild-life documentary.

(Edit: for some reason, the 8090 port was working better than 8080) - mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yes it is. It's either "stabilized" or "stabilised."
- stan205, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think the camera mounts are made by FLIR, kinda cool

- joolz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Isreal" nice :)
- villemba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://news.jasonhawkes.com.nyud.net:8080/archives/2006/04/aerial_views_fr.html?coral-no-redirect
That loaded about half of them (13) for me before it quit. - bigmanoren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5and its spelled Israel, not Isreal
- shortie446, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He lowered the resolution so all the digg people could see it, these pictures look great, ill have to come back later for the hi-res images.
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Agreed. The brilliant shot by the helicopter gimble camera make the series worth watching. Planet Earth was the first thing I thought of when I saw these pics.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4nothin' wrong with keepin' it real yo
- andyzweb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Took a while to load but definatly worth the wait!
- villemba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Those are some really amazing pictures.....the cached ones that have loaded so far (I'm averaging about 1pic/3minutes). If you wanted people to appreciate your work you probably should have put them in a place where people will actually be able to see them (flickr) or at least do not put the full res images on the initial page you link to. However, if you wanted to watch your web server burst into flames it appears you succeeded.
Incredible imagery, poor planning. - Terc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Use. Spell. Check.
Seriously, it takes what? 3 seconds? - neave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Digg effect has kicked in for me. Anyone have a mirror site?
- soupisgoodfood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Uh, you do realise that Google doesn't cache the images, right?
- Schda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you like that photography, could I recommend "Earth from Above" by Yann Arthus-Bertrand?
http://www.yannarthusbertrand.com/yann2/affichage.php
It's actually a book, but I discovered it while on vacation in Chicago a few years back. He had an outdoor display with his photographs reproduced in a 4 foot x 6 foot format (If I remember the size right). It was absolutely stunning and I purchased his book on the spot. Absolutely amazing pictures, and there is a good sampling on his website. - lbermude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And its spelled Colombia, not Columbia
- Jessimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2now that had to be the lamest thing i have ever heard... why don't you stop wasting ours and appreciate the photos for the works they are, regardless of the definition. and if you really cared you would come back later.
- lochness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks for the heads-up re Planet Earth (hey.... I've BEEN there :-)
Target sighted...
Acquisition in progress... - affanjam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1pixaly hurts my eyes.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They look really pixelated to me...
- boycy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Likewise again - I watched it just yesterday. Incredible pictures shot of animals, from 1km away, in a hovering helicopter, with absolutely no shake whatsoever! Extremely impressive technology.
- mrirwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe I'm being a bit cynical, but I'm not sure what role the gyro stabilization is playing in these photos. I've worked with professional photographers shooting hand-held (both low ISO film, and top-end digital SLR) from both helicopters and light aircraft, and they came out razor sharp. This seems a bit self-promotional more than anything else.
Also, I checked what I can from your site, and I didn't actually see the gyro mentioned anywhere. This may be due to the fact that the pages are not loading. - pickupjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It seems like this photo :
http://flickr.com/photos/pickupjojo/134954807/ - oracleredux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even the caches are struggling. Can anyone who already has the images post them on flickr or something, although that is perhaps a copyright violation?
- Jessimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the one of the light house is in my town... thought that was cool. but they didn't show the island that used to be under neath it.
- ktalinu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1More images at http://photos.byethost7.com/index.php?path=Aerial/
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think they put up super-low res images in place of the normal ones to survive the load - so they are expanded to fill the space they were originally in.
- soupisgoodfood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK, I can't see the photos, but it doesn't seem very impressive. Of course photos and video from a large heli using expensive equipment is going to look good.
What to see some really impressive stuff? Check out this: http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t32252p1/
Sure, it's 90 pages long, but there are some really good photos in there, and they all (except a small few, where noted) are taken from RC helis, often using piezoelectric "gyros" that sense the rotation and adjust the camera mount servos. - IcedZ, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5I like stablazied stuff.
- Stockwell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1server is already down....
the digg effect again - FlyingLlama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's funny how people are replying to first comments just as a way to get their comment at the top. For example, carguy84's reply had nothing to do with the parent comment. It's quite clever, actually, I do it sometimes. I'm just worried everyone is going to figure it out and the whole point vanishes.
Maybe I shouldn't have written this as no one seemed to notice about carguy84 okay ill shutup.. - Quaoar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have to agree that the photos I've viewed are not being presented in a way that the sharpness from stabilization is remotely apparent.
OTOH, I have a stabilized telephoto lens (canon) that produces the sharpest pics I have ever seen from a handheld camera. Image stabilization is being supplied in even mid-level consumer digital cameras. - gmikej, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I think you meant destabalised...
- coxyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why do my pic look like pixaly......(Is that a word?)
- clueless, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache:3I7t5sWjBE0J:news.jasonhawkes.com/archives/2006/04/aerial_views_fr.html+&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=1&client=firefox-a
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2wait, Jason are these yours? LOL!!!!!!! digg digg digg
- splatnik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"stabilized" = correct US spelling
"stabilised" = cooky brit spelling which is not correct in america but we all know what it means. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0damn. What happend to the photos? This morning when i was at school they were all high-res. Now, they SUCK! VERY DISAPPOINTING. UNDIGGING.
- akifbayram, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1the pics dont even show up for me!
- hotpepper, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Whoops. Didn't see the extra 'A'. My bad.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+0when you post something like this, include the photographers name.
No credit No digg. - hotpepper, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3The second spelling isn't incorrect.

What is Digg?
