- Areku, on 10/12/2007, -9/+80Not trying to sound like a snob about it, but those look very Photoshopped... especially the second picture. Is it just me? O_o
- Vixenbergen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38Not photoshopped, actually very real. I was walking on Lexington in Manhatten and saw one. Curiously, I later bought a cup of coffee at Starbucks. Not folgers, but coffee nonetheless.
- laserman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28The original blog that reported this story is http://www.coloribus.com/blog/?p=158. The raw feed blog swiped the story to get the traffic.
- Alphabet, on 10/12/2007, -8/+28ah yes, nothing like waking up to the fresh smell of sewer in the morning. Personally, I think this was a dumb idea by the marketers. People are going to equate that sewer smell with the smell of folgers coffee.
- modian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17"People are going to equate that sewer smell with the smell of folgers coffee."
The funny thing is, that equation is actually pretty accurate. :oP - z0zin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Folgers...why would you want your products to be associated with sewer gases?
- compilererror, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15@phatvolvo
That silly little English rule that dictates that one must not end a sentence with a preposition is antiquated. I recall reading a great quote from Winston Churchhill: "That is a rule up with which I will not put."
It just shows you how ridiculous it makes some sentences. It keeps things from flowing well. This is a natural language; let it evolve. - MixedSpleens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I honestly dont think they are fake, as some people so far seem to, The thing is they do, and would look awkward from any other angle then straight on when photographed. This is because you have two frames of perspective messing with your head, the way that bad photoshop image merges do.
- nitroskanker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10after a while... more like after a minute
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9the manhole cover is NOT the sewer. the steam has no smell, it's just hot water.
- garf12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Its not sewer steam big cities have steam lines running to all the big bulding for heating and such.
- paryl, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12yeah, they're fake. i think it's a great idea, but if the marketing campaign is real, the pictures are just mockups to show what it /could/ be.
- illu45, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11But that's not actual steam... it's sewer... stuff...
- Warptera, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Those would get dirty after a while...
- MrFisty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8They'll be S&S's concept art. So yes, they will be PS'd. Ad shops love presenting mock ups where people are actively looking at the ad, as if to say "They'll love it so much, they won't notice the bus they're about to walk in to".
- zeldafan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Sewer steam?
- eclipxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Maybe the fact that we're sitting here discussing this is the "Gurerilla Marketing" part...if they were real or not, it still makes people think about Folgers coffee. Any publicity is good publicity!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11No, I believe those were real, printed on vinyl with holes cut out to match the holes in the manhole covers.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Doesnt this kind of ad creep annoy anyone? I get infuriated when I see advertisements in every single place I look. Now they will be covering the ground before we know it. I've already seen them on the parking lines in parking lots (well on the Internet, not in person yet.) Maybe its just me, but I have a hatred for ads everywhere I try to look.
- matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4well in new york around times square the ads are replaced like every 1-2 months excep the cup o noodles and the coke sign
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Are you serious? Let's get something straight. Graffiti and vandalism are 2 completely different things. Yes, there is some graffiti that is blatant vandalism, but most of it is art. Guerilla marketing is graffiti art, except it's a brand name.
- DannySpace, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Amazing! Nothing gets me in the mood for coffee like SEWER STEAM. Thanks Folders!
- protocoI, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow! NYC got a Hot Coffee Mod!
Sounds like a scandal in the works... - teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4As if we arent subjected to enough ads everywhere we look...am I the only one sick of having ads shoved down my throat?
Yes it a clever idea but give me a friggen break. - SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think it's dangerous. Imagine walking then seeing what looks like a open manhole under you. By the time you freeze and say "Oh isn't that clever, I think I go have some Folgers." You'll get hit by oncoming traffic.
- cobalt60, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This works out great - I already associate Folgers coffee with stuff out of a sewer, so it fits well.
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey, Thanks for the link to some lame ass blog!
And then! the blog links to the comment section of the actual article with the story!
Here's the link to the story if you don't like lame *****: http://www.marketing-alternatif.com/index.php?p=527 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I digg for creative use of the word goodness. That is so awesome!
- danielbower, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6 are you serious.
How does putting a print on a manhole, which has clearly been permitted by the good people of NYC, equate to coming round to my house and covering it with graffiti?
If these aren't fake do you think Folders has paid Saatchi and Saatchi to do this illegally?
Next you'll be telling me that adverts on the side of buildings are the same as vandalism.
consider yourself buried... - domosan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3While it is very possible that it's photoshopped, you should notice that it's not "painted" -- it looks more like a vinyl print that is placed over the manhole cover. This explains why you cannot see the raised texture of the manhole cover and also how the text is so crisp. Vinyl "stickers" like this have been used for marketing for a long time on the sides of buildings and buses, so it's not that hard a stretch to believe this is non-photoshopped
- theoallardyce, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4no digg this is lame ass *****, wtf is this even? no video? just some mock-ups? id fire the lazy ***** who came up with this pitch without even bothering to get a cheap plastic container and some instant coffee and actually lowering into a manhole which would take all of 15 minutes. this doesnt even make sense as an advertising campaign, why would you associate coffee with sewer manhole covers? and never-mind how you're going to get 3 foot deep potholes filled with boiling water past health and safety. oh and if the idea really was just to stick pictures of cups of coffee on steaming covers, well... no-comment.
- UltraNurd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you plugged the steam holes with cloth baggies full of old coffee grounds...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I always thought Folgers tasted like sewage... guess I was right. And no, your coffee is NOT supposed to be chunky.
- danielbower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mikeazorin:
i apologise, i didn't mean to suggest that vandalism and graffiti were one in the same. I merely wanted to point out the stupidity of the initial post.
My point being that the ad campaign was justified as, i am assuming, saatchi and saatchi would have sought permission to do it.
It's the first post you have a problem with not me. I don't wish to be righteous but I've worked with a number of graffiti artisits in my time and understand the beauty and necessity of their work. - Karisson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Whether they're fake or not, that's a brilliant marketing plan.
- levyjl1988, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ok if that's true, remember "if", then I wouldn't want to smell a manhole. lol.
- Figital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they don't want to brew coffee using the steam buddy, they just want to use the covers as ads. I don't know if you live in the city or not but some manhole covers emit steam. Putting a cup of coffee ad over it is kind of clever. Like a steaming cup of coffee duh.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2mmmmmmm, didn't know coffee smelled so good. pahahahaha.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Next these advertising geniuses will have some ads for beer and chocolate bars on public toilets, maybe even ads for corn.
- serra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I swear, I would probably trip over it, thinking that I was going to fall into it. :P
- DNABeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I recall when the original X-Box came out here is Oz. The spray painted ads on the footpath (sidewalk) arose the ire of many citizens. Microsoft cleaned it all up afterwards nad had to pay a fine but they never really cared about going through legal channels to do it. Ask for forgiveness instead of permission.
jerks. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"Would it kill you people to speak correctly? Why are people getting so lazy?"
Not everyone here is a native speaker. - gmerin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2but is the coffee hot because of the ad campaign, or because Con Ed has another electrical short through those manhole covers? People and pets get burned on NYC manhole covers all the time; its about time someone thought of using all that heat to make coffee. ;)
- Figital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What would be nice is, if these advertisements generated large amounts of revenue for the city thus lowering taxes and other expenses. I can dream can't I?
- Thezeppelin62, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3thats pretty cool
- Takteek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow... that's actually a really good idea.
- kayla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's very creative.. but there's just something about it.. I can't completely say wow.. maybe it's that dirty steam factor.
- pigsbladder, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5clever
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ahh, wake up and smell the fresh enticing arorma of sewer steam.
- ericnmu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's public property... how would advertising work
