A different way to look at the worlds flags. (kinda makes you think)
brazilianartists.net — Icaro Doria set this little diddy up to show us how a country's flag can represent some statistical data about... well ... that country. P.S. USofA gets pwnd.

- UglieJosh, on 10/11/2007, -12/+38The president is part of the blue section.
- neel360, on 10/11/2007, -6/+27I suppose it beats getting your genitals mutilated.
- stonewaljacksn, on 10/11/2007, -21/+12this stupid site was on the front page lonnngg ago, and the concept is still as stupid as it always was.
- rompom7, on 10/11/2007, -16/+2Link down but guess what DUGGMIRROR ACTUALLY WORKED! :O
It's seriously been about a month since it's actually worked for me.
http://duggmirror.com/design/A_different_way_to_look_at_the_worlds_flags_kinda_makes_you_think/ - Monolith3, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12P.S. Your site gets owned.
- GawtMilk, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3I'm guessing "Stonewall Jackson" not only drives a '60 Mustang in deluxe black / rust two-tone, but also falls under the "blue section".
- dasilva333, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5are the proportions of each flag statistically accurate?
- CarolynMittens, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10oh, I was hoping I'd actually learn what different countries' flags mean. That would have been an interesting post.
- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5"I suppose it beats getting your genitals mutilated."
Just wait for the whole pro-/con- baby circumcision discussion to bring digg full circle. - maffiou, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1@Dasilva:
Sometime, a whole set of the people is not represented... take Brasil, if you earn between $1000 and $100000 a month, you're not there ! That's a bit of a let down when it comes to have a representative image of a given country... I agree you can't make up colors in the flag to add extra category, but he could have divided his categories in a better way...
Although, wether you're for or against the war aren't exclusive of knowing where it's happening...
I guess the strength of the representation isn't necessarilly in its accuracy, but more in its symbolic value... I like it a lot !
- nolesshabitual, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@gawtmilk:
agreed stonewall probably fits in the blue field, but the first mustang came out in late 1964. i may be a liberal tree-hugger but i know american muscle
- dbizzell, on 10/11/2007, -21/+11I'm happy to be one of the white stripes in the U.S. flag.
p.s. Extra digg for using pwned in the title- UglieJosh, on 10/11/2007, -22/+5Same here.
Plus, not only am I not in this blue section, I'm also not in the 90% of Americans the mis-pronounces the name of the country as I-Rack. It's E-Roq damnit, you wouldn't like it if people called us E-moriqua or something. - thanakar, on 10/11/2007, -13/+9Pronunciation of the "i" is different in different countries, get over it.
- neel360, on 10/11/2007, -13/+1Considering American demographics, wouldn't it be more accurate to portray the Democrats (blue) as the ones who don't support the war, the Republicans (red) as those who support the war, and the Evangelicals (white) as the ones that believe its our God-given right to be in Iraq?
- abusive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2I'm in one of the stars. I can see myself there.
- UglieJosh, on 10/11/2007, -22/+5Same here.
- RevChris, on 10/11/2007, -18/+12Thats the most creative use of the concept of Venn Diagrams I've ever seen (well , except for the last time this hit the front page)
- thcobbs, on 10/11/2007, -10/+3Unfortunately, it can't really be considered very good Venn diagrams because I'm damn sure that there should me a lot more overlaps of the fields on the US flag if that's the case.
- EndangeredMassa, on 10/11/2007, -2/+32They are NOT Venn Diagrams at all. Please look up the definition of a Venn Diagram.
- RevChris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I said "concept" of Venn Diagram not "these ARE the very definition of a Venn Diagram", please learn to read
- element21, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2this was on here a while ago - im glad its back again because i never dugg it last time - I've been searching again ever since. very interesting way to put things into perspective.
- FiP0, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Well as long as it just "kinda" makes you think, you should be fine. ;)
- thcobbs, on 10/11/2007, -9/+29"show us how a country's flag can represent some statistical data about... well ... that country."
*****.
If you had said that this was meant to be political satire, I would have laughed. To call it statistical data representation is just *****.- 1mabu77fac3, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4yeah, ***** the arrogant pompous ***** that is the typical hypocritical digg user
- addysonclark, on 10/11/2007, -11/+1Awww, is somebody angry because of human error?
- MikeZila, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Human asshattery. We're angry about human asshattery.
- shinynew, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2And also almost every single country gets it worse off then the US.
- marlonmunsen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3it's called "art", *****.
- TheBedBaron, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /home/flags/index.htm on this server.
well why not?- theoverlord, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3Copy & paste the URL, they seem to have started blocking people coming from digg
- Thorpe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I can get on it fine using digg.com as the referrer.
- Nougat, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Better not try to "read more" about this artist.
Oh wait, it works now. I got a "forbidden" error just a minute ago. - dingleberry, on 10/11/2007, -4/+21So they just took some generalizations about the country and assigned them colors on that countries flag? Dugg-down as lame.
- EndangeredMassa, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Perhaps.
This would have been a lot more convincing if there was some evidence to backup the Legends listed on the flags. I didn't see any mention of where they found their data or how they compiled it.
I would mark it as satire more than a proper statistical representation.
- EndangeredMassa, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Perhaps.
- Dmitry85, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3Here a gallery off all flags http://www.freeimagehost.eu/image/04e5a3380077
Just click next, enjoy! - shartman, on 10/11/2007, -8/+10'kind of makes you think' it's stupid!
- MisterFlaut, on 10/11/2007, -5/+65th time this has made digg.
- kamerononfire, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4i wish people would search before they post an article. i've seen this one too many times.
- waronflesh, on 10/11/2007, -8/+18Why is everyone so happy to see the "US get pwnd"? I can understand hating US policies and the current leadership; but what the hell would provoke you to take pleasure in the defamation of your own nation?
- kamerononfire, on 10/11/2007, -7/+14what makes you think he is, or everyone on digg is american? i certainly am not.
- torgos, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3@kamerononfire:
Thanks for the info, I'll update your "nationality" section in my address book now. - EndangeredMassa, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6It's not an issue of wanting to defame your own nation just for fun. It's an issue of wanting to further show the world how US policy is not approved by every American.
Also, just because it is "your own nation", that doesn't mean that it is somehow better or worse than any other. It also does not mean that it should be immune from defamation or given any special consideration when you are talking about nations in general. - TheSolomon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9In all honesty, the US is far from being "pwnd." Our flag talks about our split on supporting the war, and the smaller chunk who might not be able to point out Iraq on a map? Compared to the other flags, seems like we look pretty good to me. I'll take split in public opinion and stupidity of a minority over stavation, mutilation, and forced labor ANY day, thank you. :-)
- MikeZila, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Because it's funny.
I was taught in high school history (Yes, we have schools in America. Hard to fathom, I know.) that throughout our history, we have a policy of, "Nobody makes fun of our country and President...but us.".
I will take the liberty of adding, "...except for Bush, he's an asshat." - teknomunk, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3"Because it's funny."
I think that sums up representation of the American flag. It made me laugh, the blue part. - MisterFlaut, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2"but what the hell would provoke you to take pleasure in the defamation of your own nation?"
Because it's no longer our nation.
- dawa259, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4That's bull crap!!!!
- torgos, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5P.S. I want the 30 seconds I just wasted waiting for the page to load and reading its stupidity of my life back. Buried as inaccurate and over-generalizing.
- ChayD, on 10/11/2007, -9/+1Poignant
- Sanooj, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2douchebag
- dan8302, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4DUMB
- PecanHead, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11> P.S. USofA gets pwnd.
Guess what? This is Digg. We already knew it would be USA-bashing without even clicking on the link.- SteelChicken, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Its getting quite old. But some people just cant feel good about themselves unless they are tearing someone else down. Whatever.
- SteelChicken, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Its getting quite old. But some people just cant feel good about themselves unless they are tearing someone else down. Whatever.
- xioner, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4any way we can bury for bad description while digging for half-decent site?
- MikeZila, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3You could go ahead and bury it for being a duplicate story. It's already been frontpage'd twice that I remember.
- FiP0, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2now that would be useful ! :D
- bertram, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2OLD
- liberaldigger, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4For the morons/koslams/diggerals that like USA bashing threads. Go join your brethern in Hamas
- FiP0, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Your thinking is way too binary.
- chrisutley, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2We can't all be Switzerland ...
- seleneg08, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1This had already been on here a long time ago. It's entertaining but nothing more, besides I'm American and I thought we were the only country in the world! :-/
- fantasticFlan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Waited about 2 minutes for the American flag to load and see how we got "pwnd", I am pleasantly disappointed.
Except for EU and Brazil (which hasn't loaded), the others are ***** harsh.
United States: there is support, opposition, and ignorance on the war, that's some uber pwnage. /sarc - StrangeFamous, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1The situation here in the US is a little different than the simple "Red vs. Blue" analogy (with us or against us).
The pundits would like us all to believe that it's as simple as "choosing a side". But the reality is much more complicated than that. There are thousands of people who bridge the gap between the two perceived "sides".
Some Democrats have more conservative leaning values, while some Republicans (you know who) stray away from what the public now sees as the Neo-Con movement, which has appropriated the name "Republican" and altered the traditional conservative view to be more of a mixture of religious belief and unquestioning loyalty to the White House.
If anything, there should be a fourth color:
The dark stains and creases represent the corporate entities that secretly steer the direction of our government's policies by using lobbyists to funnel money into the pockets of weak-minded politicians, controlling the votes and thus controlling the legislation.
That's the reality of this country. We've got some of the best smoke and mirrors in the world. Unfortunately, that's all we ever get with this government. Smoke and mirrors.
While the young men and women of our country are dying, fighting an arbitrary battle against a concept, this administration ***** around with our constitution, rolls back human rights, and further drives a wedge between all of us, convincing us that the only way to "win" is to never question the decisions of those in power. - CourtesyFlush, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Symbolic representation of indeterminate statistics through the use of bright and pretty colors!
That's just about par for the course around here.
NEXT: The fascination of jingling keys - MadMaxx426, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Where was France's flag? I was hoping to see which colors represented their surrenders, but alas, I think that would be all of them.
- eth3l, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2clever
- ElwoodHerring, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Reading the above posts makes me all the more certain that Americans just don't get satire. Come over here to Britain - we wallow in it!
- CourtesyFlush, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yes, yes......but what if we're satirizing the satire?
- kiduk, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2People in the world think we are equally split about the war? That's surprising.
- EndangeredMassa, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0Actually, if you count it like this:
White = 3 half(ish) stripes, 3 full stripes, 50 stars
Red = 4 half(ish) stripes, 3 full stripes
Then you have:
White = 50 stars
Red = 1 half(ish) stripe
Which do you think is has more area? It's still kinda close, though. But, I took it to mean that there were more people against than for, which is true last I heard.
- EndangeredMassa, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0Actually, if you count it like this:
- Shiftgood, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Jesus Christ guys! I put this in the design section just to show an artists interpretation (which is different) of how to display some data. I wasn't out to give you a P.h.d in foreign relations.
/relax and enjoy things - AbeVigoda, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1This was an ad campaign created by an agency called FCB a few years ago. They do some pretty crap work (besides this, which was created by an out-of-the-states office) and have recently teamed up with an even crappier agency, Draft.
