- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36Hasn't that comment been posted before?
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16And on his shoes.
- tallin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I can't help but imagine a few hundred people sitting in front of their computers with one foot on the desk getting all pissed off and irritable because they can't quite figure out the first knot.
"...and use the left thumb to push its loose end over to the...GOD DAMMIT! Ok...step 1...Starter's knot..." - blahlazer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11And by 100 you mean 16.
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Since it yields the same knot as a standard knot, shouldn't it be called the Ian Method, rather than the Ian knot?
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Maybe vstarre has a pair of these: http://digg.com/links/Marty_McFly_Shoes
- sennmen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I love the fact that this guy named a knot after himself. I do my shoes the Ian way.
- fuzzmello, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8gimme a one-handed double ian, no halloween...
- Auxon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Hey FrostyFire ... maybe you should consider what the word "technology" means. It doesn't mean the newest, most cutting edge scientific advances in computing, physics, TV sets, etc.... Shoelaces and shoes are also technology. Therefore the story is about technology, and certainly has relevance if it gives you ideas on how to use existing technology (i.e. shoelaces) in new and improved ways. It's especially interesting because it requires no change in the actual technology used, but rather a change in approach in it's use.
Regards ... - digitalsin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Just when you think you have a few of the simpler things in life all figured out.... someone comes around and shows you a better way to tie your shoes.
- hadem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5And I thought I was done learning how to tie my shoes years ago!
- bizzay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is just what I needed! I have been tying two successive knots to keep my laces from coming undone, which then becomes too difficult to untie. I am testing the surgeon's knot first.
- nicheplayer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I just learned to do this in about three minutes, and it rocks! Now to calculate all the time I wasted in my life tying my shoes the *old* way....
- chemman14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i wasnt aware that every post on thsi site HAD to be technology
interesting story, dugg - jsd8cc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Ian Knot: Look closely at Step 2 & 3. The yellow loop is different from the blue loop.
"This move creates two loops, one with the loose end behind, the other with the loose end in front." - mtlea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is especially hard to think about for those of us who tie our shoes the "left-handed" way. i.e. the starting knot the other way...
- dagfooyo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What amazes me most is that this is just one small part of an elaborate site devoted entirely to shoelaces.
- joeolivas, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Sadly, I taught myself to tie my shoes. My parents never corrected me, so I still (at 27) tie my shoes the way a 5 year old thinks shoes should be tied.
That is why I bought Timberland Power Loungers. The greatest shoe known to man.

- Areku, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Wow... this guy has a lot of time on his hands. +digg.
- jeolmeun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3on the beach.
- dggeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I haven't tied my shoes in ages. All it takes is one secure knot and, if they're loose enough, you can just slip them on and off. I even do this with my gym shoes (though I double-knot those) and have never had problems with them being too loose.
I gotta say, though, that Ian knot is pretty darn cool. - lbermude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So he can tie her with some fancy knots?
- lb3ll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3someone has WAY too much time
- lbermude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Same here 34 yo.
I made my mom or teacher to tie my shoes and then I would undo the knot to reverse enginer it when I was 5. The way I tie it is very similar to the Ian fast knot because that is the reverse natural way the knot is untied. - Shatter44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can't figure out the 1'st Ian Knot but i can do the 2nd 1. please help me
- norbiu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Ian's Secure Shoelace Knot is the best.
- jeolmeun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"This guy has WAY too much time on his hands."
It's content for advertising and he probably saves a lot of time from using Ian's Fast Shoelace Knot when he has to tie his shoes. Not too different from people writing about anything else. - giid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3and a lemon
- davidkain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The best part is trying to explain to your coworkers what it is exaclty you're so frustrated about.
"Having problems?"
Let's just say I'd never make it as a sailor.
Sheesh. Stupid Ian Method being all tempting and such... - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Holy *****...that site is awesome!
The Ian knot rules.....once you figure it out. - dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5with a twist.
- ogletree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is very usefull. I have been doing it wrong.
- cphuntington97, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Psh... who doesn't prefer sandals?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Could this be considered hacking your shoelaces?
- Neonlights, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Ian needs a girlfriend
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Mighty cool! Mighty cool! Dun dun dun dee dee dun.
- NGNR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I used to wear footwear without laces. I just wanted closed footwear that had a good hold around your feet and you can easily slip in and out of them. As there are no laces it saves you a bit of time when you are in a hurry.
My recommendation is Royal Elastics. Although not all of them are laces-free, but the elastics sure do last a long time.

Ive recently rediscovered laces with the Adidas Driving Package 03. Love those racing shoes (Re-designed footwear inspired by the original Monza racing boot).
Brrrmm Brrrmm Brrrooommm…. - Jathan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.fieggen.com.nyud.net:8080/shoelace/knots.htm
- Eddible, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hahaha it worries me that sites like this actually exist.
- Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some of those shoelaces are a bit extreme...I mean, you would have this big fat lump hanging off your shoes
- ehudokai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Shoes "ian knotted" .... ++digg next...
- mtlea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In 'parent talking to child' voice:
"Now remember, the bunny goes around the tree and back through the hole" - Razerious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow. A site about shoelaces.
- Aflat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bah, all those knots are so slow, if your looking for speed knots, check out
http://www.speedlaces.com/
It has speed in the name! Mostly used by tri-athletes, but my 8 month, pregnant with twins wife LOVES them. - brownspank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Notice how the loops are created steps one and two in Ian's Knot? That's a crucial stage in the process, the rest is cheese. Besides, there's also the flipbook. ;)
- DuNzTaR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Those look ugly...
- positron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Been tying my shoes with an Ian knot for nearly a year now. It's fast and easy once you learn how. The knot itself seems to be a bit more secure than a regular knot, as my laces don't come undone as often. I also think it has saved my shoestrings a bit of wear and tear, but I've got no hard proof of that other than I haven't had to replace them yet.
- KiwiFireball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Shoelaces? what are those?
wear boots -
