- StigNordas, on 03/17/2009, -1/+159I counted 18 LEDs always on in my living room. It's getting ridiculous.
- zoomzoom83, on 03/18/2009, -1/+127I can handle some LED's, but blue LED's should be sent back to the pit from whence they came.
True story: I used to have a DVD player with a ***** huge big play button on the front, lit up with a 30,000 candle power blue led. So, when you're watching a movie you have this glaring light in the corner of your eye.
I fixed it with some black tape, but seriously- Did nobody at any point in the development of this product EVER test it themselves and realize how ***** annoying having a big bright blue LED shining in your eye while watching a movie would be? - openthink, on 03/17/2009, -1/+115i've got an LED on some stereo equipment that's on even when whole system is off. i called the manufacturer, they told me, yea, only way you can shut if off is by unplugging things. why? who knows, guy said, it is what it is. yea, it is...and, in this case, it's stupid.
- shadowmoose, on 03/18/2009, -1/+109You want LED's? Check out the one on my external hard drive; you could land a 747 with that thing. God forbid it's reading or writing something.
- jivemasta, on 03/18/2009, -0/+83I know, about half of the LEDs in my room are ones that are ON when the thing is OFF.
My TV has a blue led if its on and a orange one when it's off. If it's on I can tell by a large led screen flashing images, if it's off I can tell because there's nothing on the screen. So stupid. - cl2yp71c, on 03/18/2009, -1/+82Status: Driving owner insane
- Moocowz, on 03/18/2009, -2/+79but how are supposed to know if the TV is on if not for the little LED??????
- Dennisisok, on 03/18/2009, -1/+73Obviously thats the off light.
How else would you know your stereo wasn't on? :) - nigelmansell, on 03/18/2009, -2/+64I have to use black electric tape to hide all the hideous blinking LED lights from my computer equipments.
- DavidTurnbull, on 03/18/2009, -1/+57There are 3 separate blinking lights on our home phone alone. Our stereo system has a retarded blue glow, and a few more LEDs. And one on of lamps buzzes when it's turned on - I know that's not relevant, but it pisses me off.
- chriszma666, on 03/18/2009, -22/+78They are there for a reason. Most of them tell you the status of the device.
- Worldchrisis, on 03/18/2009, -2/+46They should come with an off switch though. There's no reason for every electronic device to glow just to tell the user it's plugged into an electric outlet, you could look at the wall and notice the same thing.
- DontGiveADamn, on 03/18/2009, -9/+52But us tech guys love LEDs, we want them in everything.
- atm259, on 03/18/2009, -2/+41LEDs in moderation.
- bradleyland, on 03/18/2009, -0/+33I like to turn my lights off and sit there in my livingroom imagining I'm on a spaceship bound for the Mars colony.
- strictnein, on 03/18/2009, -0/+30I want LEDs in my LEDs.
- maz2331, on 03/18/2009, -5/+34I demand double the LEDs.
- b1m2x3, on 03/18/2009, -1/+29everyone thinks I'm weird cause I take black electrical tape and cover all the LED's on my electronics...
I don't need a blinking blue light on my laptop to let me know it exists. - bradleyland, on 03/18/2009, -0/+28Yeah, but what about the sticky residue.
From the tape. FROM THE TAPE. - Ahnteis, on 03/18/2009, -3/+30They aren't even satisfied with just LEDs any more. Now the @#$@ things have to BLINK CONSTANTLY when they're OFF.
(I too have resorted to electrical tape to quiet the insanity.) - inactive, on 03/18/2009, -0/+27I usually put tape over it when I'm sleeping and leave the computer downloading something and don't want people to notice that the computer is on by accident because it's NOT and they then open it and see the file name of what I'm downloading and freak out. But it's nothing to freak out about. I just have a thing for horses and blonde naked women.
- t0ny, on 03/18/2009, -0/+27My bedroom looks like an airport at night. I have leds on just about everything my stereo, TV, cable box, cable mode, wireless router, switch, my mythtv box, my server, my nslu2, and a few other random things. Non of them are all that bright but still annoying in a way.
Another thing I had is blue leds. I have two portable hard drives with them and both of them are so bright you can't look directly at them. - 2Deluxe, on 03/18/2009, -1/+28"But it's glowing!"
"That just confirms that it is off."
related; does anyone know how i might be able to turn off the ***** power light on my Vaio FW15G? http://sp.sony-asia.com/media/62/30738 . It's BRIGHT GREEN when its on, or BRIGHT ORANGE when it's in standby.. Either way it lights up my whole room at night. Atleast, like the author, I always have a toasty pair of boxershorts in the morning. - lazyslacker, on 03/18/2009, -0/+26This guy is right on. I've definitely had the thought that all these LEDs on things aren't necessary. I have little squares of electrical tape on a lot of them, like my speakers and my TV. I mean, does there really need to be a light on my TV proclaiming it's on? If I'm watching TV on it, it's switched on! Pretty easy deduction.
- camtech, on 03/18/2009, -0/+24Every device should have a switch/option.. like the netgear rangemax routers. Love the switch.
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/6012/3312225107.jpg - starkraving, on 03/18/2009, -1/+24At the very least they could have some sort of ambient light sensor, and adjust the brightness of the LED to maintain contrast. So during the day it would be brightly illuminated, and when the lights go out it would reduce its output accordingly. Alan Cooper would do it.
- camtech, on 03/18/2009, -0/+22Exhibit B: http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/1873/31zxq22j4qls ...
Not sure what went through the designers mind... Maybe they wanted someone to be able to know when it was being accessed if they plugged it in behind a computer..in another room. - jivemasta, on 03/18/2009, -0/+21A lot are pointless. I can understand something with a battery having one that says it's charging, because you might not be able to tell right away if something isn't connected right. But a power on a TV is pointless, especially when it's telling you the tv is off.
- inactive, on 03/18/2009, -0/+21My TV has an LED when its off, my cellphone charger has an LED, My cordless vacuum has an LED, My computer UPS has two LEDs, My TV antenna has a very bright blue LED, My cordless phone has a bright LED screen, My stereo has an LED and My computer speakers has an LED.
All of these devices glow very brightly at night when they're charging or supposedly "off".
I don't need to see a damn red light when my TV is off. - xexx, on 03/18/2009, -0/+20Put tape over it, that works on a lot of things.
- 818Rob, on 03/18/2009, -0/+19I have a Cavalry 1TB external. With it's blinking blue light along with my desktops blue light I'd swear aliens were landing right outside.
- superkendall, on 03/18/2009, -2/+21I totally agree - I have a USB stick that holds SD storage cards I bought with a Lexar CF card - it has a blue (blinking) light during transfer that will sear your brain.
I have a VGA switcher that I use to route connections to my home theater PC. The selected active VGA cable has a constant blinking light.
I have external drive cases that I leave on all the time when connected to same media computer. Giant blue glow from that, check.
Enough! I am tired of having to use electrical tape to overcome the designers lack of consideration for my eyesight! - bradleyland, on 03/18/2009, -0/+18Oh no, they tested it. The popped in the movie, then all sat back and reveled in the beauty of the big blue LED on their play button.
What? There's a movie on? - inactive, on 03/18/2009, -0/+18 ... wait, what's new about this?
My VCR has been blinking "12:00" continuously since 1986. - EKinnee, on 03/18/2009, -0/+18One of us missed the sarcasm.
In case it was you, I figure you can tell the TV is on by way of the image on the screen vs. an LED to indicate that yes, the TV you are watching is in fact on. - stk198323, on 03/18/2009, -0/+17The LED when it's on is for troubleshooting!
If it blinks it oculd be a speaker problem (hence why you don't hear anything), if it blink twice and stops it oculd be a problem with overheating that could break your tv and when you get no image at all the number of flashing will indicate where the problem lies so that a technician doesn't waste 10 hours testing all transistor and resistance to see wich one is the problem!
The LEd when it's off is to tell you it's in ''suspend'' state not really OFF (to tell you it can still receive IR information from the remote to power it on) but this one isn't really necessary, I do agree! - inactive, on 03/18/2009, -1/+18I've put electrical tape over the LED's on all my gadget chargers. It got so bad that I had trouble falling asleep at night because they were so frickin' bright.
- weister42, on 03/18/2009, -0/+17I don't mind LEDs but if you have a modem or router installed in your room it is damn near impossible to sleep at night without covering them with something.
- Snoogs, on 03/18/2009, -0/+16Worked on my 'Check Engine' light like a charm.
- goober1473, on 03/18/2009, -1/+17Yes, but I have some USB cables with a LED. Why on earth do I want a LED on a cable? It tells me it's plugged in, but so does the fact it's been plugged in by me, dangles out of the PC and has a device showing in the OS.
I have no idea where it came from but it's up there with the LED in the PSU fan of some systems, totally useless. - BananaGrabber, on 03/18/2009, -0/+15My speakers have a blue led. I feel your pain.
- robustyoungsoul, on 03/18/2009, -0/+15This is one of the greatest comments ever, and I'm an insider to the industry so I should know.
- inactive, on 03/18/2009, -0/+15My complaint is not the lights themselves but rather how damn bright they are at night, why can't they make/use dim LEDs or put some tinting over them so they don't light up the whole ***** room?
- Jektal, on 03/18/2009, -2/+17Yo dawg, I heard you like LEDs!
- MadHarvey, on 03/18/2009, -4/+18I am an insider to the industry, and am going to let you in on a little secret:
That blue LED shines so brightly into your eye, haven't you ever wondered that it might not be an accident? In early 2005, it was discovered that information could be encoded onto blue LED light using a pulse frequency close to the brain's alpha wave.
Surprisingly, the brain can decode and process this information without the observer being aware. Right now its being used to send you subliminal advertisements and whatnot. But, the government has shown expressed interest in the technology, and is probably already using it (I left the industry awhile ago).
Also, sorry to all the conspiracy nut jobs out there, the information enters your eye, so the tin foil hat doesn't help. - jmd2121, on 03/18/2009, -0/+14Laptops are what are most annoying for me. Apple was the worst for this: my last Macbook had an LED on the front so bright it would light the *whole room* at night and pulse bright->dim like a heartbeat. It made it so I had to cover the machine or shut it down completely, or take it off the desk in the bedroom. That they built them without the option to turn them off is maddening.
- ChaosProfessor, on 03/18/2009, -0/+14try having a blue led Alarm Clock, I thought it would be a good idea, nice big numbers kinda cool looking, now it sits upside down on my dresser.
- SteveMax, on 03/18/2009, -0/+14The problem isn't the power usage, it's the annoyance of having a bunch of blinking LEDs in your bedroom while you are trying to sleep.
Wait, why am I feeding the troll?! - dextermanas, on 03/18/2009, -0/+1448 LEDs, including ones on the modem and router. :( Not all are on though, but yes, there's enough of them to make my room look it's ready for christmas -_-
The worst offender though is my Sony VAIO. Has this huge light bar at the bottom that flashes different colors. I can't even put my laptop in sleep mode in the night because the stupid thing flashes a while light bright enough for the entire room. I'd like to see how the guy who came up with this 'bright' idea sleeps at night.
Also on the annoying list of gadgets is the N73 which sports a blue light that goes on when the device is in sleep mode.
I seriously wish there was a law which made it illegal for manufacturers to force always-on LEDs onto us sleepless customers. Atleast outlaw those effin blue LEDs for christ sake!
http://texyt.com/bright+blue+leds+annoyance+health ... - tekkitan, on 03/18/2009, -8/+21Put some black paint or nail polish over the LED. I dont mind LEDs, if you do, fix it yourself. It's easier for you to do it yourself then ask every hardware manufacturer to change their ways.
