- Dradis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Article may be summed up in the following sentence: A redesign should implement new features and improve upon the existing site, as opposed to merely changing the way the site looks.
This reminded me of one of my favourite A List Apart articles, "Good Designers Redesign, Great Designers Realign" : http://www.alistapart.com/articles/redesignrealign/
On a side note:
"These projects have little to do with website usability or accessibility, and a lot to do with paying the mortgage, by the way. Don’t look for these sites. They’re not up to my standards in most other respects."
I don't think trash-talking your clients on your personal blog is a good business practice. Perhaps they really do suck, but I'm sure your clients don't appreciate you saying so on your site. - miles01110, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19blogspam. Nearly entirely devoid of useful information.
- gabraham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11It's not blogspam if it's a legitimate article FROM the blog's author! Not everyone can/will write for the big media publications, you know.
Whatever happened to the "independent journalism" that blogs were suppose to bring us? - enrico, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7looks like they just redesigned their own webpage to say "500 Server Error"
- embarkadero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7fark. redesign. blows.
- mythicflux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Not only that but it seems to me that while his site is usable his design is rather 'meh.' Kettle calling pot names and all.....
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is a bad argument. Digg is minimalist. It is not the best designed site but is HIGHLY functional. For a site that thrives on text or information, it's design is great.
- waxdart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Original Post accidentally conflates "design" with "graphic/visual design". "Design" encompasses technical architecture, usability/information design, etc.
- rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You had me at: "Its blog spam when it appears on Digg"
- voidvox0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4a redesign means the client has decided to pay you money to redo their site. who cares whether its just cosmetic or not. thats their decision not yours.
dugg down for being whiney and devoid of useful information. - skored, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Looks like his server needs a redesign ;)
Dugg Mirror: http://duggmirror.com/design/A_Redesign_Isn_t_About_Design/ - kuttfree, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I totally agree, I used to be a designer and am now a Digital Producer (kind of like an interactive project manager).
Don't rate this one, he is missing much of the crucial info which should be considered during the process of a redesign. This is not a user-centric approach, merely an 'improve the code and design approach'. A redesign isn't about design... it's about the user's needs, messaging and functionality. - thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4The funny thing is, that line of info isn't even true. A redesign can very well change the look of a site only. People get bored fast and sometimes a change of site will keep frequent visitors coming. When design gets dated, change it. This site was an awful read.
- negtive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, sometimes redesigning a site is all about a facelift. If every time you redesign, you rework features and add new ones, you'll end up with a site that confuses frequent users and has feature bloat. He get an E for effort on this article but not much else...
- KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"These projects have little to do with website usability or accessibility, and a lot to do with paying the mortgage, by the way. Don’t look for these sites. They’re not up to my standards in most other respects"
If he's saying that his own sites suck, why on earth should anybody respect his opinion on the subject? Maybe he is just trying to pay the mortgage, but that's no excuse to crank out a ***** design. If I were one of his clients I wouldn't send a single job to him after reading that. - Error601, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1BS...visual impact can make a huge difference in how people perceive your organization. If it already functions well, that's the last thing you want to change as that will most disrupt existing customers that are already used to how things work.
- manicallday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is one of the reasons why I left Farkkk. BTW I'm way happier here.
- scisam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0If a site is there to make money for a business, then the amount of money it generates has got to be the main criteria for whether or not a design is 'good'.
- JombieZesus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree. It's probably the worst redesign of a site with that large an audience I've ever seen.
- sleepyrip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Somebody just got their order of on sale "web 2.0" books from Amazon. Thanks for making me remember all the web "design" books I wish I never read.
- lohphat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I came in here to say the *exact* same thing. Fark pissed in their own pool. Here, OTOH, the site is more intuitive, interactive, and not cluttered with ads and poor visual "design elements".
- skyscape, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1redesigning for the sake of redesign is great. Its called rennovation. Its what you do with the building that sort became old looking. It became old looking not because its dusty, but because newer building structures have been built and as a result your building lost that brilliance. So to get the brilliance back you need to redesign.
Does that make sense? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2As a designer my self all I have to say is.... Blah blah blah blah blah, Blah blah blah blah blah. Blah blah, Blah blah blah. BLAH!!!!
- fredsterss, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1plus the actual visual aesthetics of his site and all the links in his portfolio looks as if they were designed by a 12 year old learning html
- Recyclable, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Accidentally dugg it because I just registered to comment on it and I thought I could take away some digg or something :p
As someone has previously said, it's basically saying what A List Apart has said, except with less knowledge.
As someone else has also said, it's very much calling pot kettle black, and an awful way to get customers. If you hope to attract customers to your site, I'd suggest refraining from posts that may lose you market (this loses customers that either wanted to redesign and have just read your lovely encouraging words on it, and loses any repeat clients or new clients that are put off by your bitching about clients after having worked for them). Your site could also do with a BIG facelift. When I resize just below 1024x768, your header breaks out of its container, your text is huge, which is fine for the visually impaired, but gives me a hellofalot more scrolling and looks pretty shabby - and you seem to keep pretty much the same font and sizing between most projects.Your colour scheme is one of the most drab things IN THE WURLD.
Another thing that really irritated me is how you make excuses in your portfolio;- "not my usual" etc etc. If you don't like it, or it isn't what you usually do, why put it in your portfolio for all prospective clients to see?
*pop* - hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2so guys...tell us
whats your professional opinion on Diggs redesign?
/...looks forward to amusing argument - Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Its blog spam when it appears on Digg and offers little usefull information in it. It doesn't have to come from a big media corporation to be good and useful. Also, posting your own blog is kind of passe on Digg, But, heck, if it gets this much attention then more power to you, everyone else is doing it.
- spraguep, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1duh?

What is Digg?
