http://www.theonion.com/content/node/33930 - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Are you kidding? I cut myself much less with my Mach 3 than with some cheap 1 blade razor. I don't think the number of blades comes into it. Overall quality maybe? I don't really know about razors, except that nothing I've tried shaves as nice a Mach 3.
- Falcorian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Razors remind me of WWI Biplanes... Need more performance? Just stack a few more "wings" on top of each other! It's got to be the best solution... Right?
- tacom8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Actually they say that the razor blade already obtained perfection way back with the single blade razor hit the scene, it actual does a MUCH better job then today's razors... The only reason you feel the irritation with "an old cheap single blade" over your newer mach 3 is that you are using too much pressure when shaving. I really wish i could find the article again, it went into much more detail in how to shave properly.
They say the only reason that the modern multi blade disposables where ever invented was because no one ever purchased new razors only cheap replacement blades (think of the new cheap printers, expensive ink debate) hence the "new and improved" cheap razor, expensive and quick to dull blades to make more money. - moylan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12yeah that like thats going to happen
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Razor_and_blades_business_model - sonar_un, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Relive the glory days of shaving, the old safety razors still know best.
Nothing beats a shave from a straight razor.
I wandered across this site a while ago. Apparently there are forums for this kind of stuff.
http://www.classicshaving.com - truebullfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9these big shaving/razor companies need to reintroduce the shave brush rather then putting more blades on a razor
- Greg-J, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Interesting.
Although, as with CPU's, razor blades too have a practical limit to the number of blades they can hold. In order to remain useful a razor's head needs to remain under a certain depth. A razor also needs to maintain a minimum distance between the individual blades in order to lift the blades from face for cutting. And lastly, the width of a razor's blade can only be so small to remain durable and cost efficient.
I don't care enough on the subject to actually do the numbers, but I don't think a 14 blade razor is possibly right now. Not one that would be effective anyway. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I don't even really care. How damn close do I need a shave to be? My james bond shaver is enough most of the time and if I'm going to be out with a chick (that rare occasion every century or two), I just pull out the Mach 3 and shave.
After all, I am a MAN. My face doesn't need to be smoother than a woman's shaved legs. Come on. - mycatsboots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Electric shavers do numbers on people with sensitive skin (like myself). Everytime I use one (even after giving my skin a "3 week trial period") I look like I have a rash on my neck. The electrics do a great job on my face though. however, for my neck I just go very cautiously with a razor and use lotion when I'm done.
- yonbeastie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I feel sorry for men of the future. The razors of 2025 will probably look like torture devices
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Does anyone remember that Mad TV scetch where they were talking about the "Mach 20" or whatever that had 20 blades? The first 4 cut hair and the rest cut away flesh? Good stuff...
- FlyboyP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm sure the only reason Gillete and Schick keep piling on blades is for marketing purposes - not based on any real benefit to the faces of their customers. It's all hype, but what do you expect in an age when dudes put 3+ spoilers on a Dodge Neon because chicks dig it.
Pimp my razor. - blackomegax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6nano-wires.
- Graphixaddict, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5heh, i spent a decent chunk of money on a soap mug, some good quality shaving soap, a badger hair shave brush, and a double sided, single blade razor with replacable razors. You should see he razors that come with this thing, they are ultra thin and ultra sharp and they last for prolly 2 weeks befor you need to change them. Its great, i get a super close shave with just one pass, i barely even have to touch the razor to my face, just let it "fall" almost. that combined with some high quality, warm shave soap is unbeatable. really very refreshing for the morning. heh...i just went to check the site i ordered from, and it wsnt loading, so i searched for the link...and what do you know. someone mentioned it in this thread. double digg effect. anyway, classicshaving.com is where i got the stuff. although i wasnt brave enough to go to a straight razor. http://www.classicshaving.com/catalog/item/522941/190429.htm#image_1
thats the one i got.
B - gaoshan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I don't know. I bought a $120 electric razor because it is supposed to be "teh best". It works fine and is OK for quickie shaves but it is nowhere near as close a shave as a regular razor. Might just be me but it seems to miss a few too many hairs that lay down.
- thejakester, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5anything to keep you hooked at $8.99 per blade/month
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's really sad when an SNL parody that was hilarious a few years ago is now quite realistic and unsurprising.
- RandomSkratch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah I get my disposable razors in a bag of 50 at Costco for about $20 and they work just fine.
But I did read a study that compared the men's green/blue disposable razors to the women's pink ones and apparently the pink ones do a better job. Sure you have a pink razor but what does that matter? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4By 2100, it will be ridiculous to release a 14-blade razors. People will be using plasma, laser or whatever new type of razor at that time.
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Razors are getting ridicoulous. The fusion is so overpriced, and I'll just stick with my Mach 3 (also a little bit pricey, but good shave).
- bobsil1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You must have a girly-beard, not one of steel :)
- aquax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.greatrazors.com/ sells cryogenically tempered blades for almost all major brands.
I have not tried it, but people on Fatwallet.com swear by them. - kylemax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3nope, they'll probably look just like the old-school push lawnmowers:
http://www.cnn.com/EARTH/9605/15/lawnmower.smog/link.push.jpg - gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I used to get razor burn everytime I shaved with a Mach 3. I decided to stop using it and instead bought a Merkur safety razor. Ever since then I have not had razor burn in any form. Oh yeah, I get 20+ shaves out of a blade.
Point is, you don't need all those blades. In fact, one of the problems with having so many blades is that they become harder to clean and since you can't remove the hair in between the blades, they must be thrown away faster. It's just a marketing gimmick that many people buy into thinking it makes perfect sense. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've got one of those Fusion razors. 5 blades. Worked like a charm for about a week and now apparently it's too dull to cut thru my stuble of steel. I'll never understand how you can dull metal with hair... but that's a damn good business model.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I remember watching Beyond 2000 or Next Step, one of those future shows, on Discovery Channel like 10 years ago. The host put his razor in liquid nitrogen or one of those deep freeze apparatuses, and somehow that makes the blade stronger. He said he's used his current disposable razor for 3 weeks so far.
I believe the razor companies have the technology for a better razor, but they would rather sell inferior or multi blades so they can sell more. It is also a factor with the competitors. Just like AMD vs Intel and Billybob's Gas Station vs. Habeebs Gas Station. It is like a silent understanding that neither side will go too far so they can compete almost equally. Probably common share holders too. - ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Are you kidding? I cut myself much less with my Mach 3 than with some cheap 1 blade razor. I don't think the number of blades comes into it. Overall quality maybe? I don't really know about razors, except that nothing I've tried shaves as nice a Mach 3."
Have you tried the Fusion? That gives a nice shave! I can't wait till they have 8 blade razors and can shave an entire side in one swipe. Or like double wide fusions. - RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3^^^ He means Titanium Nitrite, not Tin.
- Osmanthus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Its a scam. I remember when the 2 bladed razors were new. They totally rocked! Perfect shave everytime. Slowly, getting a good shave gets harder and harder when suddenly, 3 bladed razors come out and wham! A great shave again! The cycle has repeated itself. Its about the quality of the blade, not the number of blades. They purposefully reduce the quality of the blades in the older models (to save money, and to allow for success of new models). The real problem is that the newest models are so wide I cant get directly under my nose anymore, so I'm left looking like I have a dirty sanchez.
I have recently switched to electric. ITs a totally different 'lifestyle' as shaving with electric takes a lot longer, but at least it evenually does the job and I'm not paying so much for weak blades - TugsMcgroin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They forget that as you add more blades, you actually have to move the razor less. Example, if there are 14 blades on a 4 inch long razor (cutting) surface, you would only need to move the razor about an inch to shave your sideburns. This negates the weight argument as you would actually need to hold the razor less.
Good luck shaving your bum chin, or that bit under your nose! - gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I know, but I still can't wait for that Quintippio next year.
- 1337d00d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I still use the old 2 blade style, always thought the mach 3 didnt work as well
- alanmarchman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree, electrics suck if you have sensitive skin. I also noticed I had a cleaner shave in much less time when I switched to regular razors. I even used an expensive Braun electric for years and it took at least 30 minutes for a rough shave, mind you I only shave once a week.
- quokkapox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I have never, ever cut myself with my (nameless) $50 electric razor. When I dropped it one of the three rotating blade units got dented, so I removed it. It still works great, without water, anytime I want. Shaving with blades? Pointless.
- CritterNYC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Get the Quintippio. 15 blades. Show your beard who's boss!
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=47591 - bloodmoney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The blades on all these new razors are ridiculously expensive. I have often wondered why a new company could not come in with a great razor at half the price. The market seems ripe for that kind of thing to happen.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have difficulty believing that razors will eventually have 1000 blades or so.
- ibis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If by german single blade razor you mean a Merkur, you can buy em on the net from places like classicshaving.com. They work great. If you need more than one blade you need to learn to shave, not spend more money on razors.
- Skrolnik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Mad Magazine's July 1979 issue had something to say about this situation, and I found a page with the pictures (at Wired of all places):
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/12.03/play.html?pg=4
"The "Trac LXXVI -- Seventy-six cutting edges … wrap around an entire face and shave it close and clean in two or three effortless moves" - CarbonAndroid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Use a straight razor. Will last, if not a lifetime, then close. Shaves are also closer, albeit they take longer and are more dangerous.
- gaddis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Razor blades wear out much faster than allowed by material property constraints so the companies can make more money. It is possible and even easy to put ultra hard wear resistant coatings on the surface of razor blades. It's done for industrial tooling all the time using compounds such as TiN. I wonder if the reason we don't have a razor blade that lasts for years is because Gillette, etc. own the patents for such technology and keep it in a deep dark closet in order to make more money. hmmmm?
- transfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You are correct! I invented a better razor myself. But razor companies aren't interested. All they really want to do is sell more crap. Notice the latest crappy disposable razors --with batteries! Talk about waste. What? Do these guys take Destroying the Planet for Profit 101 in college or something?
F' razors. I got a better idea. Grow a beard! Chicks digg it ;-) - muikano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There was a videocast on gearlive where they had a test between the two razors. The normal razor won over the fusion.
And there's a whole bunch of shills on digg recently. Here's an example of shills in action. There is no way that the Fusion is a good product. How bout the angle of your approach. With four blades you might as well tear chunks of your skin away. Their all going to cut at different angles, and come straight down and take your goram face away.
The fusion is a need to expand a product line that cant be expaned any more without some serious research on flexible tech. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I got the Fusion through a remarkable series of sales and rebates that ultimately made it free. And I can say that you do NOT cut yourself more. It is DEFIN TELY better than the Mach 3, which was better than the Sensor. And ther eis a logical explanation for it as well. The more blades means therre is less space in between each blade, and therefore less space for skin to get caught.
What IS ridiculous is the "power razors" I have the MAch 3 power and the vibrating does absolutely nothing. If anything, it makes it worse. - RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ever since Digg got really popular I've been fearing that the site would be subverted by corporate propagandists.
- drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The reality is all of these extra razors don't cut me but rather just irritate my skin more which is already sensative to shaving in general. I for one stuck with a crappy electric for 5 years until it choaked
- GrinningFool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You all do realize that this article is... less than serious.
Don't you? - Rggoalie3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, last time I went to the grocery store I needed some razors. Around here, you have to go to the customer service desk, have them unlock the case and do a special hand shake to get some freaking razors. Anyway, I got lazy and the fusion was right out in front of the checkout lanes so I grabbed one.
I thought it was ridiculous to have so many blades. When I saw that it had a razor on the reverse side I instantly thought of the onion article that read "I don't care how. Make the blades so thin they're invisible. Put some on the handle." Heh, not too far off if you ask me.
Then I went to use it. I was expecting to rip five layers of skin off with the thing and have little cuts all over my face. But I was surprised at how good a shave I ended up getting with it. After one sweep I found that all of my stubble had been wiped out. I was truly impressed with the shave. That said, the razors are expensive and the only reason I ended up getting it was my laziness. So we will see about next time... -
