- PacoDG, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37Aol still exists?!?! How can this be!?!?
- nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15see, they could have used the headline "aol's new gmail killer" but they didn't, so i don't have to strangle anyone today.

"because newer is not always better"
;) - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11At least they're trying to compete. Unlike Microsoft and hotmail.

usabler - toolpc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11If you ever want to destroy a PC in less than 10 minutes, install the newest AOL.
- nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"...every good tree bears good fruit; but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire" (Matthew 7:17‑19)
- TonySoRetro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Gmail = Bentley...AOL = AMC Gremlin....'nuff said!
- SuperGhost, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Don't they still charge like $25 for internet service? And on top of that, they bloat your computer with all their "AOL Antispyware" and "Security Edition" bull crap. I used to use AOL back in the 3.0 days ~ That was short lived, now AIM is all you need, however Triton isn't cream of the crop.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9AOL will always, always suck. They're even dragging AIM down with every new release of it. It just gets worse.
- ryceone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4aol still exists because its what people know. i work for an apple store, and one of the most asked questions i get, is aol included on the computer or something like that. people are just used to it and people (especially older people) fear change.
- Apreche, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Don't forget calendar-linked e-mail.
- msjgriffiths, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's reactions like this (OMG AOL?!?! HAHAH!) that...
...nevermind.
Contrary to the article description, AOL mail IS free to AIM users.
Online AOL Mail has been excellent for a long time. Only in the USA, sadly, but in any event. The latest upgrade is, in fact, very minor - and takes a product that competed rather well with Gmail (in terms of features, usability, and so on) up to and actually beyond it.
It's a good service. Don't knock it just because it's AOL - that's like praising something just because it's Google, Apple, and so on.
Wait... - pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I logged in with my AIM info and got the message, "We have processed your cancelation" and a huge from to fill out a bunch of other crap that I'm not going to do. AOL, if you drop my AIM account I'm going to come over there and cram your CEO full of walnuts.
- Alegis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I didn't bother to click it, but perhaps because it's beta.
Oh and bigass ads infested ! - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It doesn't destroy it, just loads it up with tons of running applications that slow the PC down greatly. I think of AOL in line with Norton Internet Security products, if you want it on your PC then you surely want to spend $100 on bloated protection software to go with it.
- rizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I can understand why based on AOL's track record people would be skeptical, but you have to give them credit for trying.
Also the beta webmail offers drag/drop, something GMail doesn't do. (Yet anyway :-D) - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3We knock it because we know of AOL's track record. I don't want to log in one day and get an enter credit card screen before I can proceed. If you want us to praise something in the AOL camp let them first rework customer service and drop pricing of the failing dialup system.
- rizzle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4How is this not free? If you have an AIM screenname, you already have a mail account @aim.com (not aol.com)
go check it out
http://beta.webmail.aol.com - Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"AOL is know making uninstalling easier, just phone us up and we will mail you a flame thrower to remove our software"
- muffins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It wouldn't be too shabby without the ads and such, but I still prefer gmail.
- Soccrmastr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Gmails pwns all. They should keep GMail beta, so it doesnt get swarmed up by n00bs.
- bndocksnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you know, i've been a gmail user for a while now, and i was really happy to see microsoft add some gmail type functionality into their hotmail live beta. if aol wants to make similar improvements, why not let them? at the very least, its an improvement for any current users. believe me, i've wanted to throw my hotmail account overboard like the overweight anchor it has been the last few years, but now i'm re-thinking that a lot.
on another note, what's with the "me-too" beta nonsense these days (directed at all of you bloated old-web companies) ??? - bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I'm going to have to go with this guy. Regardless of personal bias, its actually a pretty good webmail service. It includes 2GB of space to Yahoo's 1GB. The one thing its missing really is further customization, and I'm accessing it through Thunderbird so I really don't care about that.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2thank god aol's cd proliferation was short lived in australia and pretty much noone knows about them, for noobs we have telstra, still evil but not as evil (but still pretty dam evil)
- Jody, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've used their webmail before and to be honest I can't tell where the new features are. The search is different, but I didn't see any new photo integration. I also can't stand that when you login, you're confronted my a page with 20 bazillion ads instead of being able to view your email. I don't know if it's because it's a Beta, or because of the link from digg, but it was super SLOW. I'll stick with my .mac address.
- drumbum4b, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too Bad it never will!!
- joeyjoeyjoey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Didnt google buy like 5% of AOL around the 1st of the year? I know it was mainly for search and ads but I wonder since part of the deal is search and aol wants to add search for email I wonder if this deal is one of the same.
- javiel, on 07/08/2008, -2/+1lol really? AOL? really? an A in front of an OL?
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Don't knock it til you try it....alot of aol's new products are pretty cool.....the toolbar has been redone...aim mail is now very similar to gmail with 2 gig storage and no problem with outages etc. They now offer a firefox toolbar as well. Tho I agree on one thing....their aol browser based on ie 6 is a huge drawback....We'll probably see them base it on ie 7 in the future or even firefox. As far as broadband goes for 10 bucks a month I get backup dialup and all the services they offer to go with my seperate broadband connection.

Hey look AIM made useable. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
AOL = Another Online Loser - DigitalPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3AOL still exists cause you touch yourself at night pacoDG ; )
- reagan83, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Look at their beta website - Is that the first AOL page ever without advertisements?
the. aol. the.
