- mithi, on 10/10/2007, -5/+66Holy crap! I thought those were all photos. Insane.
- canthraxp, on 10/10/2007, -2/+50Sucks to be a realistic painter; everyone thinks you used a camera :(.
- mookst3r, on 10/10/2007, -3/+45Does that big head give you the creeps?
- merdiesel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+38What if you woke up and that big head was lying next to you..
- JonTheGoose, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Painters want paintings to look like photographs and photographers want prints to look like paintings. THE WORLDS GONE MAD!!!
- robotvsmonkey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17well it's great that they can paint so realistically, but come on. If I had that kind of talent, I would not be painting the inside of a grocery store. I would be creating worlds that no one has ever seen.
- ToxicGas, on 08/11/2008, -4/+19as an artist, i agree with you. i appreciate them for what they are & those show great technical skills, but are rather boring as a final result.
- shinynew, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15It would be more interesting if they did stuff that couldn't possibly happen in the real world.
- shaelen, on 10/15/2007, -2/+15Some might suggest that interpretive art takes more skill than realism. Many people don't know that Pablo Picasso painted things fairly realistic before he went all "cubist":
http://www.eyeconart.net/history/20th%20c./cubism/ ...
He probably wouldn't have been as well known as he is if he hadn't made a gutsy move by breaking away from realism. - tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -9/+21Yeah, I'm amazed by the realism. Frankly, I much prefer art like this that takes skill than stupid "interpretive" art like this. http://www.modernartimages.com/images/abstract/abs ...
- MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I remember when I played Silent Hill 4... The scariest part for me, hands down, was when I walked into a room in the hospital and there was this giant ***** head suspended in there with twitching eyes that followed you around the room.
I've said this here before, but one of the creepiest things to humans is when we see a face that's "wrong". It feels very threatening somehow, even when you know it's not real. - Typhoon2009, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Jeeze, those must've taken forever to paint.
- shinynew, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9"use your face to digest this slideshow of ralph’s amazing work…"
what? - thePheonix9, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Almost as bad as waking up with "the King".
- LordMorpheus, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11I know that these took forever, but hyper-realism is really overrated. And not my cup of tea.
That being said, that giant head is sweet. I have mucho respect for someone who can make photo-realistic art in creative ways that photography cannot. - nakedcellist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Love one of the comments :"Those are paintings?? Good Christ. I’ve got friends who don’t look that realistic."
- verifex, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I like the sculptures of everyday people doing everyday things; it would be very interesting and possibly spooky to walk into the room with all those pieces on display. Even if you were alone, you would definitely feel some kind of presence.
- carbonetc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8There's an easy solution: call it a craft. The continuation of practices that are no longer anywhere near the creative frontier should really be labeled crafts, and these people are amazing craftsmen.
- noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -0/+71.) Dru Blair is a he
2.) He paints for the Air Force
3.) A simple Google search for his name shows countless sources that are familiar with his work. - subterfu9e, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12WOW. That's really hard to believe that those are merely paintings. Really well done.
- BackDoorAngel, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10or you could just, take a picture...
- jamangold, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Great! You got the attention you wanted so badly. Now ***** off.
- L4WL3RS34L, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Mirror in case:
http://duggmirror.com/design/9_artists_who_will_bl ... - aargh01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I stand corrected. (that's what I get for not fact checking my rantings on Digg... )
- hadessniper, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10while I respect the skill that is needed for photo realism I don't think it will ever move me, art is really about showing the viewer what the artist is feeling and photo realism can hardly ever express as much feeling and perspective as more abstract art.
- MrShak, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Those all look amazing and I respect the artists for all the work they must've put into those works but I've got to say that hyper realistic art just isn't my favourite thing to look at. I think it must be the fact that sometimes a hyper-realistic painting/sculpture just looks like another photo and that makes it seem just so normal. Though I have to say I loved the huge head.
- aliguana, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4ah, but that is where the fun is, that is where the challenge is. Spilling paint splodges on canvas is boring, as boring as taking a "snap". But to push it... I can see the appeal in that.
- x1ang, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Personally, I feel that art is not a subject limited to an abstract and self-expressionalist form and style. It is a near borderless subject that include entirely unique styles which appease to different tastes or no tastes at all. That's what makes the subject and its respective contents so interesting and pleasing.
- shaelen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Which link above? The one fromtehpwnrate? Or from the original post on digg? If you are talking about the original post, yes, I can see the difference. But Picasso's early stuff is still fairly realistic.
What I am suggesting is that it is probably more difficult for the artists in the original digg post to create interpretive stuff than to create realistic stuff. - Sanooj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I agree, that's the reason that Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind gives me the creeps. The part where the faces are distorted gives me nightmares.
- bradleyland, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4In robotics, this uncomfortable feeling associated with things that _look_ real, but we know are artificial is called the uncanny valley.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_Valley - slaystench, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Do you know where to find a big head? Do tell!
- shaelen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You wrote:
"Ok, let's take first guy Duane Hansen off the list - not photorealitic - it's sculpture."
Maybe that's why the poster wrote:
"the following jaw-dropping pictures are of paintings or sculptures." - hydrodev, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5at least one of those was *****
- orukabir, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Oh great Flickr. :( it's blocked in China
*Interesting.. pics from farm3.static.flickr.com server (I guess) is not blocked. - pixelate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3pics *and* it didn't happen?
- sirjimbob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Saw Ron Mueck at the Brooklyn Museum. Absolutely brilliant.
- Acqua206, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I see titties.
- noumuon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4and you don't see the difference in realism between those and the link above?
- fnaqzna, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If that gives you the creeps, try this:
http://flickr.com/photos/brooklyn_museum/284772500 ... - shaelen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2What realistic painter *doesn't* use a camera? Even the Robert Bechtle section has a youtube clip showing him using a projector to outline everything he's about to paint.
Does that cheapen the final product? - shaelen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Try surrealism:
http://www.surrealism.org/ - fnaqzna, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yes.
- shaelen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's not a painting, it's a sculpture.
- thebuggalo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I was hoping someone would make a comment like that. I have to agree that while it's impressive that those are paintings, they can't be considered great art just because they look realistic. A lot of them have no real composition. Once you get over the fact that it's a painting, most are just boring to look at.
- noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3"appears to have more jpeg compression artifacts than brush strokes"
What do you think happens when you photograph a painting and resize it for the web? You want more evidence Google Dru Blair. - mojaam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You can add this artist to the list: http://aurory.deviantart.com/art/Some-closeup-imag ...
Impressive stuff all around. - LoneJeeper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2art or not, the technical ability to recreate something so precisely using brush and oil is spectacular.
Camera obscura anyone? - shaelen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Do you mean the youtube clip right above #6? That's "Falling" by Julee Cruise. It was used in the teevee series "Twin Peaks."
- onionoino, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i saw the ron mueck (big man)sculpture in buffalo, it looked as though it was going to move any second. Amazingly realistic and enormous too.
