http://1001fonts.com - vbsurfer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22The only font sites you need to know:
http://www.dafont.com
http://www.typenow.net
http://www.creamundo.com - face1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I saw a bumper sticker stuck on a wall the other day that said "Hellvetica" in arial. I laughed at it, and was immediately ashamed at myself for getting it.
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I used to use that site.
Free fonts are good if you're not in any design business. I prefer commercial fonts because the quality is (most of the time) much better. I consistently use Adobe and Bitstream fonts; yes, they're a bit pricey, but well worth it in the end. - face1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9http://bancomicsans.com/
- Function, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5All junk decorative fonts.
I don't think you could seriously use most of these fonts for anything, except for headlines or logos. Most of them are junk, and nearly all of them only have one weight. - jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6nice site but I prefer dafont.com layout
- JamesGlover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4But they don't half slow down your font menus, and plus make it awkward to find what you want. This way you can choose fonts you'll actually use.
- MrSunshine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You really should replace Arial with Helvetica then, if you don't want ***** fonts.
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Probably because their front page is made almost entirely of Flash UI widgets. Icky.
- TheComputerMutt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"free fonts, free true-type fonts, free typography, ttf, download free fonts, true-type fonts, free fonts, free fonts, free fonts, free fonts, free fonts, free fonts, free fonts, free fonts, free fonts"
Nice, keywords. - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Doesn't he realise that Google will mark you down for including that sort of thing? It should be at least made into some sentences. :)
- fkuall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've found the best way to get LOTS of fonts is to go on DC++ and search for peoples windows/fonts directory, i downloaded 65 megs of fonts once.
- Aurarch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, because I LOVE spending 10 minutes scrolling through my fonts in Photoshop as it is...
- EnsErmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.alvit.de/blog/article/20-best-license-free-official-fonts
For actual good free fonts… - Odo08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did anyone find a font worth downloading? I browsed randomly for ten minutes and didn't find a thing.
- rauz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2On this matter - has anyone found a good alternative to Extensis Suitcase or that other well known font managing app I forget the name of?
I use Suitcase atm but it doesn't remember what fonts I want active after reboot and feels a bit old and feature-less to me. - goodcompany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2re: alternative to Suitcase; FontExplorer X for OS X is available free from Linotype and it's the iTunes of font management, a really nice tool for previewing, organizing, and activating fonts and groups of fonts. It is available as a UB for OS X, they are working on a Windows version as well.
A would buy from again! - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Have you ever installed a couple hundred fonts? Do you know what it does to the system? IIRC they are scanned every boot, so the more you have the longer it takes.
- norris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Try loading gimp with over 1000 fonts. Or don't and beleive me when I tell you it sucks.
- grapfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have a DVD that has all my fonts on it, almost 6GBs of .ttfs and all I do is pop it in the drive, open up Font Expert 2005 (Suitcase doesn't play nice on my windoes)and activate, use, convert to outlines when done and deactivate. I actually only have maybe 50 fonts "installed" I actually overloaded my Mac at work and am waiting for a good time to clean that up.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5We need a torrent of a kabillion free fonts. None of this click-and-install individually crap. Fonts simply sit in a directory, so installing a billion of them (if they fit on your harddrive) won't slow down your bootup.
- face1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Careful, kids, that's http://dafont.com without an s
- logicalnot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I am amazed nobody is talking about http://typophile.com/.
This site is not famous for downloading fonts but it's great place to talk about them. - EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7I hate to sound rude, but I think this guy did a very good job with the site. I suggest you all turn off ad-blockers for his benefit.
- cadavreexquis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Oooh, very nice.
AlphaWizard TTF is my favorite so far. - tominator1983, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Someone, please do this! And release a bittorrent of it!
- bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ditto, they don't always have the biggest selection though. Their interface IS excellent and its always my first stop when I'm looking for a font.
Edit: Oops, meant to be a reply to jk baller23 regarding dafont.com. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ok ok you're right
- Mr.Scientist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4The downloads may be free, but they're certainly not legal. Download a couple of them and look at the copyright information in the files. Link reported.
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"comic sans is the industry standard for any site that relates to children"
You know why? It's the only one installed with Windows that has an 'a' written like lowercase alpha as opposed to that with a hat. That is the /only/ reason. I, personally, hate it. It's overused. Especially when one of my 'A'-level students hands in his A2 IT coursework printed entirely in the thing. ARRGH.
Anyhow, for worksheets, Franklin Gothic Book FTW. - Kupotek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Odose~ Yea Alte Schwabacher is nice for some work I do. And Alfa Flight
- Kupotek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very cool site, thanks. Nice interface. very user friendly!
- aldreneo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What n00b posts a spyware font site? Even if it is not spyware...It is not legal
- undresedmonster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed. dafont.com is by far the best place to find free fonts because the fonts are ORGANIZED (script, calligraphy, serifed, etc.)
It's basically useless to me to sit and browse aimlessly through a list of thousands of fonts. But, nice effort, I guess. - trollenlord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Most of them also are missing many very often required characters such as ëüïÿöäöä or ñ and so on.. Most of the "free" fonts are usually completely unsuitable for any real use.
- anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why does it seem like no one ever designs fonts you can actually USE? You know, something useful instead of hundreds of thick, blocky typefaces.
P.S. My favourite fonts include Helvetica Neue Ultra Light and Myriad. - fistandoodle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For those with tons of fonts, like me:
TheFontThing (best friggin font manager this side of free)
http://members.ozemail.com.au/~scef/tft.html
Loading a font when you need is > having 4000 fonts always installed - obezyana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bluephoenix, that's exactly my point.
Hospital = NOT a web/graphic design company.
Even if kids prefer reading in Comic Sans, waaay too many people use Comic Sans for anything that relates to children, or even stuff that they just want to look "playful" whether it relates to children or not. Prime example, my sister's school, which sends home all sorts of letters intended for the PARENTS typed up in Comic Sans.
I could understand someone saying, "Well, children like reading in Comic Sans, so we'll publish children's books and design children's websites with Comic Sans," but that should be it. Handing students an envelope labeled "To The Parents of Our Students" which contains a letter warning about the dangers of MySpace typed in Comic Sans, is ridiculous.
See, now I wish I were a professional designer instead of an illustrator, I could point you at my portfolio. I do know a good bit about design but none's on my site. - bluephoenix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@obezyana: I agree, Comic Sans is overdone, I applaud your intelligent reponse without having to resort to calling me a pussie....this is what the digg comments system should be populated with...perhaps I 'm defending comic sans too much, it's just what I see on a regular basis.
- iria02, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also try
http://www.youngblitz.com - xx0xx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1comic sans DOES suck.
it wont make the children any happier.
use something better.
even using only 1000 fonts, opening your font folder takes as long as highlighting all your desktop icons and hitting enter and the events that follow. - fartonmyear, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2the person who downloads all of these and zips them shall be a god among men.
- robertsmiths, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0More gorgeous free fonts - http://www.smashingmagazine.com/category/free-fonts/.
- bluephoenix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1amateur? do your research people, I work in a children's hospital...http://psychology.wichita.edu/surl/usabilitynews/3W/fontJR.htm
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Or, rather than raping his bandwidth after it's already been Dugg, you could just download the ones you actually want. They're easy enough to install as and when.
- obezyana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Industry standard? INDUSTRY STANDARD?!?
Which industry are you talking about here?
More like amateur standard. Professional designers stick to stuff that's not vastly overused.
Yes I know not all website designers are pros but that means you CAN NOT assume the fonts they use are an industry standard, just because those fonts happen to show up frequently. - mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Okay, originally when I came to this page, I was planning on saying something rude, BUT not anymore, because that's a really well done site. The preview feature is really nice.
I'm going to go back and click on some ads now. - gfors, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Comic Sans is one of like 5(?) browser safe fonts, being the best out of five for kids isn't saying much....why are kids ruining the internet anyway.
