- peterjmag, on 05/10/2009, -3/+109Can we stop calling programs like these "Photoshop alternatives"? They're not built to compete with Adobe, they're built to perform simple edits and tasks that people shouldn't have to pay for. What's wrong with "image editor"?
- LucasVB, on 05/10/2009, -1/+34Unfortunetly most people think Photoshop can just crop, resize and color correct images.
- ChasInVictoria, on 05/10/2009, -5/+35Not sure why "under 2MB" is important, unless you are doing your photo editing off an old USB key ...
To agree with PeterJMag, these aren't "Photoshop Alternatives," they're just image editors. An actual ALTERNATIVE to Photoshop (that's not a toy program like The Gimp) would be welcome, but none of these even come close. Photoshop's main competition is actually ... Photoshop Elements, which does 90% of the same thing in a more attractive interface (for non-pros) at 1/8th the cost. - primatage, on 05/10/2009, -1/+23thank you.
- jggube, on 05/11/2009, -0/+19That's an expensive way to edit your family photos!
- doshindude, on 05/11/2009, -3/+22Or you could just get Photoshop. There's no really good alternative yet.
- hyderalamgir, on 05/10/2009, -3/+14WTF? No pixlr.com
- zeptobyte, on 05/11/2009, -0/+11This was EXACTLY what I came to this story to say. None of these programs are even sort of alternatives to Photoshop.
- BlueCadenza, on 05/11/2009, -1/+12Thank you. A true photoshop "alternative" would let me open and save files in DICOM format for medical professionals, let me import 3d models and composite them in an image, simulate 7 blade bokeh, etc. There's no competition for this stuff. I always tell people to just use Picasa if they want to edit their family photos.
- cowsgonemadd3, on 05/11/2009, -0/+10Competes with paint.....
- JshMRsn, on 05/10/2009, -2/+10I think something like Pixelmator is more practical than these options. It's fully functioned, but it's very focused, so is only 60MB. It opens instantly, which is the main advantage of a 2MB app over a GB one like PS.
- unic0rn, on 05/10/2009, -7/+15I hate it when they use the term "photoshop replacement". Something that is two damn megabytes is NOT a ***** replacement to the best image editing and design tool on the market.
- twiztidsinz, on 05/11/2009, -0/+6File name: \Photoshop_CS4_Portable.rar\Photoshop\PhotoShop.exe\Photoshop CS4.exe
Malware name: Win32:VB-LGG [Drp]
Malware type: Dropper - phpirate, on 05/11/2009, -1/+7There was a little joke in there and apparently you completely missed it.
- Wargasmic, on 05/11/2009, -0/+5Thanks that was my first thought. Photoshop is a lot more advanced than these simple image editors...
- ChiffX, on 05/10/2009, -1/+6Pedobear ascii has gotten out of hand. I'm burying that ***** every time I see him now. It was funny maybe the first 5 times. I've seen him least 50 now, and only 3 or so of those were actually clever.
Think of pedobear. Stop whoring him out for diggs. - gigatwo, on 05/11/2009, -1/+6On the flipside, Photoshop Elements is worse than the GIMP. Unless, of course, you can deal without layer masks or the pen tool.
- norman619, on 05/11/2009, -1/+6Wrong. I'm asking why this article is trying to compare Go-Karts to a Formula 1 race car.
- TomNZ, on 05/11/2009, -3/+8Every single one of the screenshots featuring a person features a black person. Very politically correct!
- Geek180, on 05/11/2009, -4/+8How does photoshop take too long to load? Takes like 5 seconds on my mac. Why would I want something less than Photoshop?? It's the ***** best.
- Wargasmic, on 05/11/2009, -1/+5If you're a pro you won't find a replacement for Photoshop.
- Wargasmic, on 05/11/2009, -2/+6Then maybe they should start pirating?
- exec0extreme, on 05/11/2009, -3/+6http://www.getpaint.net/
- KelliShaver, on 05/11/2009, -0/+3Agreed. Pixelmator is the closest thing to a photoshop "alternative" I've seen. It's an excellent application for its price.
- Brasolis, on 05/11/2009, -0/+3i think the MAIN advantage is that it doesn't cost you several hundred dollars for something most people don't need.
- Brasolis, on 05/11/2009, -1/+4Because people who don't want to pirate software aren't going to spend hundreds of dollars on something they don't need?
- norman619, on 05/11/2009, -5/+8Um...no. It's the features that are important. The features are what make an art application worth your time. They will help you be much more efficient and productive. Comparing Paint.NET to Photoshop CS4 is like comparing a gokart to a Formula 1 race car.
Sure I can make textures, digital backgrounds, and such with something like GIMP or Paint.NET but in nowhere near the short amount of time I can do it with Photoshop. Photoshop is for more than just photos editing. CS4 makes integrating Photoshop into my 3D work so much easier and has made me so much more efficient. No way can I do this with the toy applications on this list. - rub3nmv, on 05/11/2009, -0/+3Does it really matters?
- kurkpeterman, on 05/11/2009, -1/+4Paint.net is where it's at. Automatic updates. Saves to most all file formats. Easy cropping and basic image adjustments. Easy tab interface. I've been using this for years, it's the best.
- andreaxjean, on 05/11/2009, -0/+3What ever happened to Gimp (the photo editing program, not the string)?
- andytronic, on 05/11/2009, -0/+3The dog isn't black.
- temsi, on 05/11/2009, -0/+3If you don't need it, why are you bitching about how much it costs?
What you need isn't Photoshop, you need a simple image editor.
What you need is not a "Photoshop alternative".
What you need is a Paint alternative. - ewethestuff, on 05/11/2009, -1/+3How the _hell_ do articles like this keep making it to the front page?
Every three days it's "19 Image Editors!" and "12 Online Paint Tools" -- it's almost always the same *****, who finds this diggable? - Probatus, on 05/11/2009, -0/+2You should consider upgrading your connection from dial up.
- Regulator980, on 05/11/2009, -1/+3I logged in just to digg up your comment. Pixlr seems like a legitimate almost-photoshop alternative especially when I'm on a friend's computer and he doesn't have any image editors. Thanks.
- phpirate, on 05/10/2009, -7/+9It's not the size that matters is how you use it.
- gemlarin, on 05/11/2009, -1/+3Apparently you don't know how to use Photoshop. Your probably better off with the "free alternatives" :)
- sithie, on 05/11/2009, -4/+6start>run>"mspaint"
- gemlarin, on 05/11/2009, -3/+4WTF. Alternatives? Does the author even know what photoshop is? These programs are designed to perform simple tasks, with little to no flexibility or depth.
What a retarded article. - say592, on 05/11/2009, -0/+1I used that online version of Photoshop a few times when I was to lazy to load Photoshop up, then I realized that the time I spent uploading and redownloading my photo could have been used to open the real version.
Still worth using if you dont have Photoshop installed though. - Brasolis, on 05/11/2009, -0/+1Now thats just RACIST *****!
- yocouchdigga, on 05/11/2009, -4/+5no.
- ChromaVita, on 05/11/2009, -1/+2but Adobe's main FREE competitor is GIMP.
- norman619, on 05/11/2009, -5/+6Oh c'mon! How the hell is a 2MB or less application going ot be an alternative to an applications which requires at least 2GB, takes advantage of RAID setups and so on? There is no such application at under 2MB.
- albator, on 05/11/2009, -0/+1I dont have .net by choice.
- andreaxjean, on 05/11/2009, -1/+2'Twas always stable for me and ran fine on my HP... However I've been using a Mac for the past two years.
- WomensUnderwear, on 05/11/2009, -0/+1corel! ahahahhahahhahahhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!! he said corel!!!
- designmadz, on 05/11/2009, -0/+1I think it is obvious that this blog wanted a Digg front page. But if enough diggers found it useful *cough*_and no pushing by blogger_*cough*, then live and let live....
- m4fia117, on 05/11/2009, -0/+1I read comments before even going. Now i'm not even going to go to the page. This is why we have comments
- temsi, on 05/11/2009, -0/+1How about:
paint.net != Photoshop alternative -
