  • undetected, on 10/10/2007, -2/+37They are pretty indeed. Since I'm used to getting fonts with the OS, though, I'm just not used to paying for individual fonts. I mean, the Flex font (#79) is $105 per weight, or $505 for all four. That's more than Vista Ultimate! It's a pretty font, but $505?
    I guess that makes the $35 Myriad look like a bargain.

    Remember, a company might license a particular font and it becomes attached to their entire identity. This is not limited to usage in logos and such,,, A distinctive font can be a major part of a corporate identity.

You can get crap free fonts all over the internet, most of them aren't worth the memory they take up, not even validating font management programs. Some of the ones on this list are amazing, its also nice to see more people seeing more than Arial & Times New Roman.

  • samfishercell, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Ahhhh, there YOU are tiny breath of fresh air on digg amidst the religion bashing, unimpressive pictures, and obviously high schooler-created digg posts. All the designers are giving each other high fives, and the rest of everyone else is saying things like "gorgeous? How are fonts gorgeous?". Type nerds, unite.

    HOWEVER, not only did the list forget Comic Sans, but Papyrus and Curlz are somehow missing as well. (Although, these fonts are HIGHLY suggested to anyone who thinks it's worth tracking down the 'free version' of any of the typefaces on the list.)

    Also, don't use Myriad Pro or Steve Jobs will literally split your front door down the middle and steal your first child.

  • samfishercell, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8There is definitely a comment war going on between those who are 'in the know' and slyly making type-jokes left and right, and those who have no idea what's going on and are frightened by the idea that their font collection they nabbed from dafont just.isn't.any.good.
  • eltrev, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9I was expecting more garbage fonts, but this is a great list of pure quali-tay. In fact, I they are so good, I am surprised that this made it to the digg main. Diggers like cheap, novelty, lame, free downloadable fonts from what I've seen in the past.

  • akzidenzgrotesk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6i thought helvetica at least came on most systems? and myriad for sure, it's the default font for illustrator (which is probably the reason i can't stand it, but hey, it's on this list and it sure beats times new roman).

    Akzidenz-Grotesk(Hel-*****-vetica is based on this font) is my personal favorite.

As a designer one can instantly tell so much about a person using comic sans. With that said where were all the serif fonts at? I didn't see a garamond caslon anywhere.

    Ah hell, in order to appreciate the list you have to appreciate and know typography which means the list is mostly useless!

    a great font is never cheap or free, and a free font is never great. some exceptions, sure, but this stands for the majority.
  • turpenine, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7as a designer I usually make my own font before I shell out $505 for one. Usually though I would know which weight I needed for the job, but i would just as soon make my own font and license it to the client.
