- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+41If only the list entries actually linked to the font files, you could do something with them.
- undetected, on 10/10/2007, -2/+37They are pretty indeed. Since I'm used to getting fonts with the OS, though, I'm just not used to paying for individual fonts. I mean, the Flex font (#79) is $105 per weight, or $505 for all four. That's more than Vista Ultimate! It's a pretty font, but $505?
I guess that makes the $35 Myriad look like a bargain. - Nearoschyth, on 10/10/2007, -3/+35http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3629419/148Tipos.zip
Oh *****, excuse me. I tripped and must have accidentally dropped those letters onto the screen. My bad everyone. - Balanced, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29You're not a professional designer. (And neither am I.)
Remember, a company might license a particular font and it becomes attached to their entire identity. This is not limited to usage in logos and such,,, A distinctive font can be a major part of a corporate identity. - TomP, on 10/10/2007, -6/+32I'd rather have 80 gorgeous free typefaces :(
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -18/+44They're not downloadable, so who cares?
Lame. - EnsErmac, on 10/10/2007, -3/+27Do you understand the effort that goes into creating a GOOD font? You can get crap free fonts all over the internet, most of them aren't worth the memory they take up, not even validating font management programs. Some of the ones on this list are amazing, its also nice to see more people seeing more than Arial & Times New Roman.
- AdamTReineke, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19It is a very long page, but those are incredible fonts. Now, if only I had taken a Typography class, I could do something cool with them.
- DesignerScott, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19That's not even funny.
- MrWhipplemen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16I have to get fonts all day long for work so here is a little tip that i ripped off from g2p.org
paste this
intitle:index.of "ttf" +"???" -htm -html -php -asp "Last Modified"
in google
the just replace the font name in the "???"
then just download and blah blah blah - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1480 Gorgeous typefaces is to the seasoned graphic artist what the Maxim Hot 100 is to the average joe... the beauty...
- bradleyland, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14I'll see your hubris and raise you some snobbery. Typography is a specialized art. A well formed, well hinted, well balanced font is hard to come by.
- iffypop, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12About 6 comments up.
- samfishercell, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Ahhhh, there YOU are tiny breath of fresh air on digg amidst the religion bashing, unimpressive pictures, and obviously high schooler-created digg posts. All the designers are giving each other high fives, and the rest of everyone else is saying things like "gorgeous? How are fonts gorgeous?". Type nerds, unite.
HOWEVER, not only did the list forget Comic Sans, but Papyrus and Curlz are somehow missing as well. (Although, these fonts are HIGHLY suggested to anyone who thinks it's worth tracking down the 'free version' of any of the typefaces on the list.)
Also, don't use Myriad Pro or Steve Jobs will literally split your front door down the middle and steal your first child. - Balanced, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11And to think, most of the time the Digg community complains because articles are cut into too many short pages.
- jordanlund, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Designers do love their sans serif fonts, don't they? I think I counted under 10 serif fonts... Now I can understand not having any monospace fonts, but I find the lack of Palatino or Garamond disturbing.
- Coy0te, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8God Damn it, my Australian eye for design just can't compete with your northern european greatness....
- codyodell, on 10/10/2007, -9/+17It's just you.
- MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+91. Find fonts
2. Torrent
3. ???
4. Profit? - chris9902, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10The best thing I've dugg in weeks. Thanks.
- samfishercell, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8There is definitely a comment war going on between those who are 'in the know' and slyly making type-jokes left and right, and those who have no idea what's going on and are frightened by the idea that their font collection they nabbed from dafont just.isn't.any.good.
- eltrev, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9I was expecting more garbage fonts, but this is a great list of pure quali-tay. In fact, I they are so good, I am surprised that this made it to the digg main. Diggers like cheap, novelty, lame, free downloadable fonts from what I've seen in the past.
- ophello, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Downloading free fonts is like typing in all caps. Only people with no taste or appreciation for good design do such things.
- p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6We can all debate on whether you like this or that font, but I have 1 statement.
How THE HELL.... can you NOT love SmashingMagazine? Is it just me, or is anyone like in love with this site? Anytime I see a new article come out it like makes my day and *****. - iffypop, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8But.. what will we use for the office newsletter?
- kris33, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Good luck finding them.
- samfishercell, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I can't say enough bad things about what you just said.
- sylv3r, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9for corporate use... oh well *back to free fonts list*
- EnsErmac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Not everything in life is free, I don't see you on here bitching when someone posts about a car. When you want something nice, you have to pay for it more often than not.
- resplence, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Verdana FTW.
- SilverRocket, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5#20 - Rockwell
#25 - Officina - unco, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Some families take longer than Vista to design and almost all are put together with more care...
- akzidenzgrotesk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6i thought helvetica at least came on most systems? and myriad for sure, it's the default font for illustrator (which is probably the reason i can't stand it, but hey, it's on this list and it sure beats times new roman).
- static_13, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Anyone serious about great design should have at least Helvetica, Univers, Futura, Franklin Gothic, FF Meta and some other from the top 40 on the list in their inventory.
Akzidenz-Grotesk(Hel-*****-vetica is based on this font) is my personal favorite. - lava, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Well *****, the only reason Arial & Times New Roman are everywhere is because they're free. If I want to use these fonts (legally) in my work I have to pay a ridiculous amount of money. Arial it is.
- samfishercell, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Ehh... I couldn't resist after other tongue-in-cheek Comic Sans comments started getting thumbs'd down. I couldn't believe noone had thrown Papyrus into the fray.
- p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Yuck
- ophello, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6these fonts are professional typefaces and you arent worthy of their use. go download your crapy 1001 free fonts.
- markstory, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I still find it amazing that anyone is willing to use comic sans. I despise that typeface with my entire soul. As a designer one can instantly tell so much about a person using comic sans. With that said where were all the serif fonts at? I didn't see a garamond caslon anywhere.
- TroubleInMind, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Nobody can use Frutiger except me. NOBODY. Forget you saw that.
- DesignerScott, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Add Avante Garde, Goudy, Minion, Rockwell, Officina, Kabel, and a few others. Otherwise the list gets official designer approval.
Ah hell, in order to appreciate the list you have to appreciate and know typography which means the list is mostly useless! - nublet, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7so where's the download link?
- dannyb37, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I don't know how many people agree with my, but for professional design, that wouldn't be a wise choice. imo that font is terrible.
- ophello, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3good, fast, and cheap. pick two.
a great font is never cheap or free, and a free font is never great. some exceptions, sure, but this stands for the majority. - turpenine, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7as a designer I usually make my own font before I shell out $505 for one. Usually though I would know which weight I needed for the job, but i would just as soon make my own font and license it to the client.
- p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Yuck
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Kudos on the first comment about typer nerds uniting.
A slap in the face with a dead fish for listing comic sans, papyrus, and curlz. The most "I bought this cooool designing software at OfficeDepot-fonts there are"
And a pat on the back for the very funny steve jobs comment, because it's funny. - akzidenzgrotesk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3mine too. obviously.
- Cambo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I dont even have 90 buddies on one IM Buddy list
- deadpixel621, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I can't believe you can't detect a joke!
*ahem* It IS a joke, right, "thelatermonths"? -
