- suxmonkey, on 11/08/2007, -1/+15I find the Egyptian one just amazing ... they're going to turn the desert into arable land, diverting the Nile? Sounds like some modern-day Moses magics
- marc2242, on 11/08/2007, -0/+11That bridge in France is crazy. I prefer to stay below the clouds when I'm driving.
- BassMastr, on 11/08/2007, -0/+9Nice article...props to the author.
- tmbrwolf19, on 11/08/2007, -0/+8To be fair, large parts of the desert along the Nile were arable up until the construction of the Aswan Dam further up the Nile. The dam stopped the yearly floods that covered large parts of desert with water and slit and provided a good growing environment. But still a cool project none the less.

Bypassing Tarn at Millau
The Tarn flows from the east to the west of France, south of the Massif Central, bisecting the country's North-South axis.
For nearly thirty years prior to the construction of the Millau Viaduct, the A75 autoroute had remained unfinished. Before the bridge, a crossing of the River Tarn was provided by a bridge situated in the valley bottom, in the town of Millau. Millau was then known and dreaded as a ‘great black spot’ of motoring. Kilometres of congestion and hours of waiting to transit the town recurred each year with the great surge in traffic in summer months. These slowdowns meant that the advantages of the A75 were lost. The A75 was meant to be a positive example of spatial planning, a modern, direct highway entirely free along its 340 km length. As it was, the traffic from the autoroute brought pollution and danger to the town of Millau.

- ophello, on 11/08/2007, -2/+7I can't wait until we build a modern pyramid.
- darkhero, on 11/08/2007, -0/+4The French bridge looks cool. The Egypt water system looks crazy. I didn't know you could turn desert into farmland.
- jmpeagle, on 11/08/2007, -1/+5wait...Why did they build a bridge over a dry valley? That had to have been way more expensive than just a road going through instead of a bridge.
- zoom1928, on 11/08/2007, -0/+4Except for the Three Gorges Dam, it will hurt more people than any other modern project. From the article:
"will increase the inhabitable land in Egypt by as much as 25%."
I have several friends that are going to be displaced by this horror. It's all about making much of the privately owned land in the country worthless while making a small section of land owned by a few powerful Muslims worth much more. - PhillyMJS, on 11/08/2007, -0/+3Extreme Engineering on the Discovery Channel did an episode about that bridge in France-- it is amazing, and so is the way they built it. They constructed the towers, then built the span itself on land and jacked it horizontally into position.
- rheaume, on 11/08/2007, -1/+4I hope someone destroys your home for a ***** road someday.
- whatthefu, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2You can't beat the Three Gorges Dam. But the bridge is ***** awesome too.
- BassMastr, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2Bush has nothing to do with this. You should get help. Obesssions aren't healthy. And even worse when you're an idiot too.
- itsatrapadbar, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2dugg for a few good photos and places, especially the elevator. i'm not even scared of heights but that would be ballsy.
- zoom1928, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2Why would you want ancient ruins destroyed just to make ones that look new?
- seneyr, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2Interesting list. Also, links to some of the other "wonders" lists they have there were are equally interesting.
- Tippis, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2Money is just money.
The Millau bridge is art. - ronnsprocket, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2anybody else read Modem world?
- craighoxton, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1The Chinese elevator reminds me of that Arthur C. Clarke book with the elevator to space...
- ultralights, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1i have always wondered why our modern society doesnt restore al the old ruins it has found, eg in greece, all the ancient ruins should be restored to their original intended beauty, for everyone to admire again as they were once designed, same for the pyramids. image seeing them now, a they were seen 3000, yrs ago. not only would it be a great justice to their design and significance, but it would be like a rebirth, so they can stand for another 3 millenia.

- ultralights, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1im not saying destroy the old ruins, just restore them to their former glory.
- 99Casimir, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1I guess the author considered the Saturn 5 rocket too old to be modern.
- manicleek, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1I can tell you now that the A75 is not free at all, I travelled its entire length a few months back and it cost 40 euros.
I can also tell you that no picture does that bridge justice, you have to stand on it to truly grasp how massive it is - BassMastr, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1...furious props!
- tony23, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1Building dept. wouldn't approve the plans
- HayString, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1You would never get me on that elevator. I get butterflies just looking out of a 7 story building, I'd ***** myself 1000ft up.
- ckbreece, on 11/08/2007, -0/+0Yeah that was a good blog post. But my favorite thing on there was that CRAZY kozyndan illustration in the header.

- castevens, on 11/08/2007, -0/+0The Big Dig in Boston, MA happened right outside my window. It was not supposed to be so expensive but they ran into many many problems, such as the soil not being stable enough to hold tunnels. A very impressive feat of engineering (they literally froze the ground to dig it).
...but nothing compared to those other things like the bridge in Millau - inactive, on 11/09/2007, -6/+5The Big Dig? Lame.

I seems they could have pulled eminent domain on a few villagers to just put a road through the town.
could have saved a lot of money. - roberto_deneero, on 11/08/2007, -7/+3Edit: 7 Al Quaeda Targets of the Modern World
