- kaeda, on 12/03/2007, -8/+4thanks, mate!
- HoraceQS, on 12/03/2007, -19/+5Yeah, Flickr sucks so hopefully one of these is better.
- naonao, on 12/03/2007, -3/+5Since when did Flickr suck?
- illt, on 12/03/2007, -1/+3"SmugMug keeps 4 backup copies of each photo in 3 states. You get unlimited storage in all plans. Your can see your photos without registering, and without spam. The handful of times that I’ve needed to contact support, they’ve gotten back to me with a real answer within minutes."
- naonao, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1But flickr is free and has more users.

- MeganM, on 12/03/2007, -9/+1Photobucket is great.
- pimpmydaughter, on 12/03/2007, -3/+6I'm a flickr fan -but it's always nice to know there are alternatives
x- Pepper, on 12/03/2007, -1/+2I use Flickr because of it's nice interface and the great community.
- Dan1, on 12/03/2007, -2/+241) DeviantART
2) Zooomr
3) Fotki
4) PBase
5) Photobucket
6) Photo.net
7) SmugMug - CraigJ, on 12/03/2007, -2/+31Not sure why Picasa isn't on the list. It's a great site, and the Windows software is really nice, the integration with Google maps is cool too.
- SlackerCSB, on 12/03/2007, -5/+20http://picasaweb.google.com is the best - by far!
- Netmindstorm, on 12/03/2007, -2/+8"is the best - by far!"
Thanks for that useful information. Care to elaborate what makes it the best "by far" in case I missed something that was covered by the "-"? - Dreyruugr, on 12/03/2007, -5/+5- 1 gig of storage FREE
- Hosted by Google (no worries about "Bandwidth Exceeded")
- Constantly updated with new features
- Optional PC/Mac apps for uploading (and in the case of PC, for organizing, correcting, etc..)
- Etc...
- Netmindstorm, on 12/03/2007, -2/+8"is the best - by far!"
- dunnduggit, on 12/03/2007, -3/+1I've been very happy with ipernity.com
- roadtripper, on 12/03/2007, -7/+9I don't know. If they aren't "necessarily better", then why bother posting? Flickr is pretty awesome and Picasa is nice, but I already know of tons of other so-so services. Ok. Digg me down.
- mandarin, on 12/03/2007, -2/+1Because Yahoo sucks balls
- jevidon, on 12/03/2007, -1/+6i'm a Smugmug Pro account holder for almost 4 years and I have no intention of leaving them anytime soon. Some of the most intuitive Web 2.0 development for photo sharing currently available and their customer service is second to none.
- illt, on 12/03/2007, -0/+2seconded.
i was finally convinced to sign up at smugmug, and i have 0 regrets. fantastic site.
- illt, on 12/03/2007, -0/+2seconded.
- 6502programmer, on 12/03/2007, -3/+4Call me old school, but unless you're hosting your own, you're at a provider's mercy. Gallery2 FTW!
- Ludwig, on 12/03/2007, -0/+5I just recently went from Gallery2 to Flickr, for the simple reason that people would actually see and be able to comment on photos.
With Gallery, nobody really saw updates until I emailed them about it. In one month using Flickr, I've received as much exposure as I did with the past 4 months with Gallery, without having to email everyone telling them about a big update from a trip or something. I've also had over 20 comments on photos, as opposed to the zero I've received since last August when I installed Gallery2. Signing up for a user account on someone's personal gallery to make the occasional comment is stupid, I don't blame anyone for not bothering with it.- ShortyR19, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1For the social aspect I copy my pictures to facebook from Gallery2 using a new facebook app (http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=23 ... People see my pictures, make comments, and can click on the link I provide to visit my Gallery2 site for the album and get the high-res or whatever they need.
- Ludwig, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1Tried that, and while it "worked", it doesn't really work.
It's an extra step to log into Facebook and tell it which album to import. You need to have an account on Facebook to even see them (Gonna tell your grandmother to sign up for Facebook, are you?). Facebook doesn't track views. How many people do you think are going to click to see the larger size on your actual gallery?
There's a decent Flickr app for Facebook, which shows a few thumbnails and then takes anyone interested directly to where I want them.

- noahw, on 12/03/2007, -3/+1I'm a big fan of flickr. I love their company's story.
I use http://echopic.com if I need to share an image quickly and easily. - mcwiggin, on 12/03/2007, -4/+5Finally some new places to search for porn!
- hijinks, on 12/03/2007, -0/+2I have always like http://www.photoblog.com It's a nice little webapp
- Jandels, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1Speaking of photoblogs, I'm a big fan of Aminus3 http://www.aminus3.com/ ... a different feel to the standard photo gallery websites but it's still pretty cool (and it's free).
- muniak, on 12/03/2007, -0/+3What about hosting it yourself and joining communities?
- h0m3styl3, on 12/03/2007, -1/+2agreed, then you control your photos. Has anyone read the EULA for picasa, flickr, or any of those sites? With most of them, any photos you post are available to be used by the service in any form or fashion, usually with the intent of promoting their service, without your consent. It's like you're giving up your copyright on those photos. They could at least assure that you'd be compensated in some way.
- skribble, on 12/03/2007, -0/+5It's important to know how you want to store, manage, and share you images when making a decision. Flickr is great in many ways, but the *stream* based management of photos isn't for everyone or certainly all occasions. I too am a big fan of smugmug, worth every penny to me, however, the management of images if different the flickr in that it's more gallery based then stream based. this makes it IMO better for archiving and sharing large amounts of images. (Plus, they do provide awesome support, and great features.)
- missingnoh4x, on 12/03/2007, -1/+2I just use imageshack.
- eses3457, on 12/03/2007, -0/+0radar.net is really nice on the mobile side
- drgreenberg, on 12/03/2007, -1/+0If you're looking for a place to host a portfolio, one which also provides for password protection for individual collections of images, zenfolio.com is an excellent place to host. I moved there from pbase.com after numerous pbase.com outages and the all-around dated look of pbase.com (this despite having already paid for a year's worth of additional pbase.com storage).
- ogletree, on 12/03/2007, -1/+1There are like a zillion sites that let you host pictures. If your pictures are related to Outdoor Sports like Hunting, Fishing, Camping, or Hiking you can go to www.myoutdoorsite.com. They have 40 TB of space and allow unlimited uploads.
- hockey, on 12/03/2007, -2/+5Redundant question but it's gotta be asked.
What's the problem with flickr that an alternative is needed?- mandarin, on 12/03/2007, -1/+3limitation
- roadtripper, on 12/03/2007, -2/+1I couldn't agree more. And, for the record, I'm not a Yahoo fan - just a Flickr fan.
- secretmode, on 12/03/2007, -1/+1try pixamo! http://pixamo.com
- motiontomove, on 12/03/2007, -0/+3Photobucket? Please tell me they're joking.
- Linh, on 12/03/2007, -1/+2zenfolio looks like a decent alternative to smugmug. I like how smugmug works, and their whole philosophy, but I just find the site to lack responsiveness with all the ajaxy stuff.
flickr fails at organizing for showing off albums, but it's a great way for me and my family to keep up with each other. It's nice being able to pool together our own photos from the same event. The only issue is my cousins tend to upload.. everything, heh. - cristianlorenz, on 12/03/2007, -1/+0And the imageshack?
- jstem1994, on 12/03/2007, -2/+0I'm happy w/ DeviantArt for the last 3 years. Even the free account is pretty powerful.
I like to goof around on Flickr a little but that's mostly for people reposting other's porn. - OlPainless, on 12/03/2007, -1/+1Just make sure you read the 'terms of service' of whatever pic sharing site you choose. Take Picasa for example. Even though you own the copyright to your pics, by making your material public on Picasa Web Albums you are giving Google a royalty free license to use your pics for almost anything the wish.
- sleastack, on 12/03/2007, -1/+1Its all about the Flickr API.. when I create an embeddable flash album in minutes or build a gallery based on a tag or group, thats where flickr leaves the rest to die..
- badambi, on 12/03/2007, -1/+1stay with flickr!
- jolton, on 12/03/2007, -1/+1If anyone here is planning to sign up for Smugmug, you can save me $10, and yourself $5 by using this code: KtrkhMRpDG8p0
- jolton, on 12/03/2007, -1/+1Also, to add...if you have an iphone it's worth checking out smugmug's website on it. Phenomenal viewing experience. If interested, check out jds.smugmug.com/iphone to see what I mean.
- supermansuper, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1Why dint they include Shutterfly.com? free, unlimited storage, they never delete your photos. no bandwidth limits...
- tommasz, on 12/03/2007, -1/+1Lots of sites want to be Flickr killers but ultimately only Yahoo! will get that distinction (if they screw up). Their track record keeps making lists like this one good insurance.
- z0mbie2099, on 12/03/2007, -1/+1# 8 webshots.com
