I study web design and development constantly, and when I see something interesting, almost by instinct, whether I'm at work or just surfing the net, my first reaction is to view the page source, inspect HTTP headers info, see how the CSS/JavaScript works, etc. This is made easier with the Firefox Web Developer extension and Firebug. I think it's the key to seeing what works and what doesn't, and constantly learning of new techniques and innovations.
