- davin3000, on 07/11/2009, -0/+9These are definitely all basics any photographer should know, but to follow them stringently is to take a boring yet pretty photograph over and over and over. Some of the best photographs you get may just break most (not all!) of the rules. With the absolute over-abundance of "photographers" in the world it is worth noting that a truly amazing photograph is more about the moment or situation captured than the attractiveness of that moment.
I recommend looking up James Nachtwey and Edward Burtynsky. - rileyhallwood, on 07/11/2009, -2/+7there is no formula for perfect composition, and there are no rules for it either. it takes years behind a camera before you can consistently create truly appealing compositions.
- cheerfulcynic, on 07/11/2009, -1/+5too bad 33% of the illustrative images don't want to work anymore
- edwartica, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4If its such a ***** art, then why don't you produce a bunch of photos to sell. Since its "*****" you should be able to do it well enough to make a lot of money.
In truth, I find that photography can be as hard or as simple as you want it to be. Yes, some photos are *****, but some take a lot of thought, set up, waiting, and what not. Getting the perfect shot often times requires patience - waiting for people and cars to get out of the way, waiting for the sun to lower down a few degrees, waiting for the wind to blow just right, and then making sure you have the right exposure, aperture, ISO speed, etcetera.. - robbob, on 07/11/2009, -1/+4use the rule of thirds
- edwartica, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2part of it might be that you've seen enough photos to know what good composition is. Same thing happens in video production all the time. I work in broadcasting, and you get some camera people right off the street that have never operated a camera in there life, and yet know exactly how to compose there shots.
- ThinkBox, on 07/11/2009, -3/+5Some good tips for beginners.
I just got back from a Trip to Petra & Israel. Check out some of my Pictures.

If you know why certain aspects of composition work, you know how to manipulate those rules for certain emotional effect. It's the same way with cinematography (my chosen field) except you also have to account for motion and performance.
- erlendr, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Nice pics! I don't know why anyone would digg you down for that post.
- rif42, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1I think he is wrong about the 66.7%/33.3% ratio. It is supposed to be at the golden ratio, the point at about 61.8%/38.2%.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_ratio - skipvt, on 07/11/2009, -1/+1I have one steadfast rule when I compose a shot: Can I buy this as a postcard somewhere?
- JYoungest1, on 07/11/2009, -2/+2Buy a camera with a massive amount of burst shot speed, huge memory card. Take photos like mad.
Here is where the skill comes in, using adobe bridge to find the best one and photoshop to touch it up. - brandontx, on 07/12/2009, -2/+0I live in Dallas. If you ever want a bj let me know :)
- PixelMagic, on 07/11/2009, -8/+4You know, I never really think about these things when I take photos, but I seem to do them instinctively. Interesting.
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -9/+3get the pussy shot. dont forget the pussy.
- VoteGOP, on 07/11/2009, -14/+2photography is such a ***** art. sure, the best photographers are excellent, but the rest are just douchebags with SLRs who know how to play around with photoshop a little.

What is Digg?
