- mighty_mouth, on 10/10/2007, -5/+66Only around 10% of the world's oil is produced by private companies (i.e. Big Oil). The other 90% is produced by various governments across the globe. Shouldn't the title read "6 Sexy Sports Cars Big Saudi Sheikh, Big Socialist Chavez, Big Fascist Putin, and Big Norwegian Social Welfare Recipient Don’t Want You to Buy"?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+48This is the dumbest thing I've read all day. Porsche is green because it get's a mpg rating in the 20's?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -11/+51Because when I go drop $150K on a sports car, I really want to know what the mpg is!!
- Alpione, on 10/10/2007, -2/+30Since sports cars are such a small segment of the car "population" these days, this could be retitled "6 Sexy Sports Cars Big Oil Doesn't Give a Rat's Ass If You Buy..."
- fpcyber, on 10/10/2007, -7/+33I wonder how the editor came up with this list. The Porsche is not "green" per say, you can get a Corvette that does 18/28 MPG, it also can run on E85, why isn't the Corvette on there then? Seems the editor just did a pick a chose and more geared towards a bias.
- scabbers, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18In other news, Big Dairy doesn't want you to buy soy milk.
- swordedge, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Go Tesla
- MiniViper, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12It's amazing how "Big Oil" gets so much flack for reaping large profits. It seems most of the world doesn't understand how "Big Oil" has little to do with the price of oil. If OPEC decides to artificially jack-up prices, Big Oil's profits go up as they ride the roller coaster. I think more anger and frustration should be aimed at OPEC and the various national oil companies of the world.
- twinklyJesus, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13My Vette gets 32 mph on the Highway. 19 city. (6 spd manual) Way more roomy and comfortable than a Porsche. Way more affordable than any of the others on that BS list.
- sdsurf, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12And if you like math, run the numbers on ethanol as fuel... yet another example of liberals trying to enact policy based on what makes them feel good and not on what is rooted in reality.
For starters, in order to get everyone using ethanol, virtually the entire United States would have to be covered end to end with corn fields. While this is, in and of itself, impractical, the effect on food prices is just as insane. We are already seeing marked increases in the price of corn-related (read: just about everything) goods due to conversion of fields formerly used for corn for consumption to fields for ethanol corn.
Add to that the fact that ethanol is actually a horrible fuel substitute for gasoline - it only produces roughly 75% energy by volume of gasoline, and pretty soon the "it's cheaper" argument goes away. When you can only travel 3/4 as far on a tank of gas as you used to - the fact that the ethanol is slightly cheaper is a wash.
Ethanol is an environmental disaster, to boot. Corn production is the single most polluting of all crops grown in the US, due to the herbicides and insecticides used, and accounts for the majority of our water pollution. The unfortunate reality of it is that ethanol is not a "net additional" energy source - rather it is well documented that (with simple math), ethanol production is a 29% negative energy balance.
I Wonder how many "carbon offsets" Al Gore and Cheryl Crow will have to buy to deal with that? - ButtonMonkey, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12There are some sexy cars on that list.
- dwb325, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Are you a high school kid who just took his first econ class? Have you learned about elasticity yet?
Most car trips are inelastic, meaning that gas would have to go up a lot or down a lot in price before you would change your buying habits. If you're commuting to work or going to the store, the price of gasoline isn't that important because you NEED to go to those places and already have a specific car. Oil companies and hope their prices don't go so high that people begin to make changes like buying more fuel efficient cars or moving closer to their work/school.
You do have a point: people need to focus on driving less.
Your last statement that environmentalists should want 'lower mileage targets' discredits your more sound reasoning in the beginning of your comment. - rwvalentine, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8"big oil", "bio fuels" - f'n stupid.
how about the greedy corporation pushing big i-pod?
buy what you want, let the market decide, but end the corporate welfare of subsidizing big bio fuel. - LooterMcBeer, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10dumbasses "Big Oil" doesnt give 2 ***** what kind of car you drive. If every car was electric powered "Big Oil" would still be making "Big" money cause no matter how hard you try fossil fuels are still used to manufacture things such as those electric engines.............
Amazing some of you cant think farther then when the mainstream media tells you. It just goes to show that this world is screwed when most of you grow up - hoovcluck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I want my diesel Honda Accord!
Now! - murakume, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Why not just collect them all into one word. they. You can't get a more sinister catch all word than They.
- allaboutdatiki, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Lotus Elise trumps all with regular gas. Its a freakin' slot car.
Sortable fuel economy chart listing 2007 sportscars:
http://mpgomatic.com/2007_sportscars.html - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Total enviro-nucase Garbage...The sheer amount of stupidity on Digg is appalling. Is this place really filled with nerds, geeks and smart people or those who pose like them and pretend to be so as to get their flawed BS enviroment, poltical and social wacko theories across.
- jfujita, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I don't think big oil cares much about the small profits from the limited number of people that drive sports cars.
- neoknight, on 10/10/2007, -5/+10http://fastwallpapers.com.nyud.net:8080/blog/?p=7
- Nearoschyth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I thought Corvettes were faster than that. Are you pushing down on the pedal all the way?
- Otto, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Three uses of "Big Oil" = Buried as lame.
- jlawson1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6big oil has shut down the internet... I can't even get to see the list of cars! conspiracy conspiracy!!!
- Alteron, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9Because at least in the 911 turbo, if it was in downtown LA, or some other heavily polluted city, the air coming out of the exhaust, is cleaner then the air being sucked into the engine.
- blitzman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7I see no evidence that "Big Oil" says anything at all about these cars. The article is baseless propaganda. Buried as inaccurate.
- digitalcassette, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5the fact that i might one day drive to california on 1 tank of gas doesn't make me want to do it any more than if it costs twice as much. my ass is still sore from sitting in a car that long despite how cheap it is.
- Clark1984, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I too, am tired of "Big Oil." It implies the oil industry is inherently evil. Who do you think supplies you with a vast majority of your energy and allows you to drive where you want to go. If we shut down "Big Oil" modern life would shut down with it. I don't think they care what car you drive. A vast majority of revenue goes right back into exploration. If everyone used less gas, they would do less exploring.
- 911ducktail, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5@qtip42
Porsche is one of the more green manufacturers. from using replaceable oil filter inserts (instead of disposable oil filters) to setting a targeted goal of reducing each models' emissions by 3% every model year. to being one of the first manufacturers to not only fit Catalytic Converters voluntarily on their cars, but also using them in their 944 Turbo race cars to prove that you can win and spew less emissions. - Stratochief66, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5You sir are the dumbest person I have seen on Digg in a good long week. Some people just spout nonsense, but you try to blend your nonsense with economics. With a more fuel efficient car people are capable of making more trips, but that doesn't mean they will. A major driving force in fuel demand is that people live far from work and must drive there every day. The cost of fuel or efficiency doesn't have an effect on this in the short run, so people have an inflexible demand for traveling x miles to work each and everyday. If they could fulfill that need with less gas then that will not increase the amount of driving they will do, its still the same trip. Lowering the mileage of cars would make the daily commute cost more and leave them with less to spend on other things, like rent food and utilities. If you passed the introductory econ class you took, then I feel bad for the state of your school and the quality of the rest of your education.
- nedzeve, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6It's "per se". Digg me down for being pedantic, but I'm just trying to help you not look like an idiot next time you try to use sophisticated language.
- diizy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Okay this is totally dumb.
The new lotus elise uses a freaking 1.8l engine and it's not on this list. its a sports car and its hella fast... - gogun, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I have to say it, but I hate wiki links. Still thinking E85 is just a smoke screen against better technologies.
- Chengessa, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I guess they really DON'T want us to see it?
- Erowid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E85#Life_cycle_impact_of_E85_on_greenhouse_gas_emissions
"It should be pointed out though, that many of these concerns are derived from studies by a single author (Pimentel) which have been rebutted by several reports.[3][4] Pimentel's argument, for example, is based on long-outdated technology, understates the energy costs of refining and transporting petroleum fuels, and neglects to account for the energy value of the byproducts of the ethanol production process, including that of the high protein cattle feed." - fplouffe, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4The whole point of higher MGP is not just how you can save on gas. More power to you if you can afford a Ferrari and all the gas it requires. Higher MGP is also about how much less pollution your car is throwing out since it burns less gas for the same trip.
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Cheap gas? I was in Russia a year ago and the prices were the same as here in the US. But then we pay less for gas than most other countries so I guess you can say they have cheap gas.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Yep. And you obviously need to save yours for an education.
- jcaino, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3e85 is great for its octane rating, however it does result in lower mileage.
- askjeffro, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6The energy required for the batteries production in the Tesla make it Big Coal's car of choice...
- Tourney3p0, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Why? It's an ugly granny car, and everything on that list would run circles around it.
Hell, it's not even a real 442. The second "4" in 442 means "4 on the floor", and the 1986 had an automatic. - OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I just see a Big Oil 404 on that page.
- arbiterusa, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5newsflash: If you own Exxon/Mobil stock, your money goes to the Saudis, who trained and financed the 9/11 hijackers. So guess what? You ARE evil. You may have talked yourself into thinking otherwise, but you are giving aid and assistance to terrorists. All so you can have some extra goodies in your living room. Pretty poor excuse to do evil. Why do you hate America so much, Chaz?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Do you even know what a sports car is? It's a small, nimble vehicle like an MG or a Miata. So your statement is stupid.
- jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4you are an idiot. I have no problem with Big Oil but what you just said is dumb. Did you see what happened in the laste 70s and early 80s with the mandatory increase in CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards. Oil companies went from ridiculous profits to property foreclosures in a span of 5-6 years.
- uberlord, on 10/10/2007, -5/+7A matter of opinion. I find corvettes to be extremely beautiful, and among Lotuses, the only sports cars that look good in any color.
- iJessicaRabbit, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4e85 really isn't good for the environment (http://www.reuters.com/article/scienceNews/idUSN1723032420070717?feedType=RSS). It creates things like 'dead zones' because of how nitrogen greedy corn is. All of the nitrogen runs off into major bodies of water, algae consume it, algae proliferate in great numbers because of all the nitrogen, algae use up a ton of oxygen, and then other marine animals cannot get enough oxygen and they die. This year dead zones were found in the gulf of Mexico that were larger than any other year past. I guess oil spills kill just as many animals and wildlife though.
No form of energy is going to be completely clean unless we get nuclear fusion (opposite of fission which is what we use now) going. I suppose solar energy is 100% clean although it's hard to harness in areas of low or infrequent sun. For the time being, electric cars are going to be the cleanest but they are still not perfect.
Regarding the cars listed I'm in love with the Tesla (current desktop wallpaper) and am desperately awaiting the Chevy Volt (http://www.chevrolet.com/electriccar/) - monkeyvoodoo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4e k e
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6Oh really? You worry about MGP when you can't afford the gas. If you are dropping $150K on a car I have a feeling you can afford the gas no mater how much it costs.
- Smuikas, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Buried as inaccurate. Most of the sportscars are "green" because they run on Ethanol.... while each gallon of ethanol requires 1.7 times the energy to produce as it produces itself. That doesn't take into account the energy taken to distill it. Plus, 11 acres of corn is needed to power one car for 10,000 miles. If all cars in the US ran on ethanol, 97% of the US landmass would be taken up by corn farms!
- tls29, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3So, now anyone who owns any stock in Exxon/Mobil or any company that buys any oil from an OPEC country is Evil? Well, I guess you buy gas from oil companies that only use American and Venezuelan Oil. Which means you are supporting Hugo Chavez. Which makes you evil. So now not only are you evil, you are also a douche. Congratulations. Asshat.
