- Dygear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3
# Replacing a large amount of text.
Ajax saves a complete refresh of the page, so small pieces of the page can be more dynamically updated. But if nearly everything on a page is changing, why not just request a new page from the server?
I think AJAX should be used to help stop sending redundant data across the internet. We have the theme and only a large bunch of content is being changed then why not just AJAXifie your content and leave the theme in the client's browser. - nocircleno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, 6 places you must use Flash.
- link470, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow, those ARE good places to use them, nice find
- Junx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I rate this story Awesome/10
It is so ***** true. AJAX whores: stop using AJAX unless necessary!! Endless Javascript and XMLHttpRequest objects are completely unneccesary unless it makes the user experience _better_. - smhill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"why not just AJAXifie your content and leave the theme in the client's browser."
Because it is unnecessary and does more harm than good.
Dynamically replacing content should be used very judiciously. Reloading content into a page that way breaks browser navigation, prevents bookmarking and can blow search engine results. Not to mention accessibility. - Glidedon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://donon.blogspot.com/2005/09/why-ill-never-shop-at-best-buy-again.html

That's the beauty of modern computers. There's NO situation where you MUST do anything. And the article reads more like "these 6 ways are OK; all others should be stopped immediately". Who the f*@k are you? How about you let people decide for themselves. If you want to make some SUGGESTIONS, that's one thing. But your voice is small in a large chorus of tutorials, experts, quick guides, and snippets.
Your way stifles the ability of someone finding that really cool "7th place" to use AJAX. I'd rather see a 100 bad implementations of AJAX then stifle one really cool new implementation of AJAX.
Also, the web didn't begin with the birth of AJAX. And it will probably long survive it's death. - c0dek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ajax? Is that in aolpress?
- waiwai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not to mention that most of the theme stuff is in the css files nowadays anyway.
- Jams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did anyone else think of the cleaning product AJAX (now called Cif)when they read the title?
- zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use it to clean the sink!
- abhibeckert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Yeah, its a cool find and everything, but do we really have to post every Ajax article we find when we could just google it and be done with it. Its not like Ajax tutorials are very hard do find anymore."
When people are bored with any particular topic, stories about it will stop getting diggs. Until then, either put up with it or go away! - concept10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a great article. Alex Bosworth does some excellent coding (swiks) and posts many insightful ideas on his blog. My only question is why not link to the original post?
- BluParadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The whole thing about using AJAX to show user-to-user interaction instantly is a dumb idea. He wants you to get away from the continuous refreshing thing, but you're really just moving that behind the scenes. It's very hard on your servers to hammer them like unless only a few people are using it. If you need a push (instead of a pull) technology, where clients are notified of changes instead of having to check for changes, then I hate to say it but you had better start looking at java applets or stand alone applications. You just can't do it effectively with web browsers, they simply were not designed for that.
- RocketmanZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, its a cool find and everything, but do we really have to post every Ajax article we find when we could just google it and be done with it. Its not like Ajax tutorials are very hard do find anymore.
- alex.bosworth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's ajax techniques to do immediate push to the client without refreshing, it just hasn't been utilized that much yet
- spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Honestly, anyone who didn't already see the benefit of using AJAX in the places mentioned shouldn't be designing anyway. The article would have been much better if it was more focused on where not to use it. Some of the information in that section was interesting.
- CaughtThinking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pretty good tips. I agree with all of them, which is rare for these prominent blog posts...
- nugget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The user to user thing. Why? most people now a days can install software (hacking if you will) and many also have IRC/AIM/MSN/Yahoo installed or Trillian/Gaim. So having your group of people in a room like that would be the same thing, just a bit more spefic and already out there... Whats the point of that?
And as for all the Ajax stuff. I could use less of it, but people like it so what can you do about it? - sweetnjguy29, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I use AJAX when I do my dishes
- RocketmanZero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"When people are bored with any particular topic, stories about it will stop getting diggs. Until then, either put up with it or go away!"
Up your's buddy. - boicraig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0PLEASE!!! Enough of AJAX and Ruby already...
- slhilbert, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0that is fine but where are the examples so that people can implement it?

- Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1You should also use AJAX in the bathroom, where it's really great at cutting through mold and mildew.
- Hoohoonick, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0go charlotte!
- SubZ3r0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0digg is ajax you retard who needs comments refreshing only noobs that post spam kevin im sure worked hard on this site appriciate it he dont owe you anything sites like this take a long time to build I know im building one so get off your 10ft high horse. its easy to recommend something its harder to actually do it.
