- aura, on 10/12/2007, -17/+128I wondered how long it would take for the OSX to be mentioned
- cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -10/+79Instead of digging you down, how about providing a link for comparison?
- EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+65If you had linked to the actual site instead of your blog we would have a mirror. Thanks for nothing.
- sinner0423, on 10/12/2007, -13/+60All ***** aside, about Vista hating & etc...
I found Vista to be aesthetically pleasing. Granted, I'm hardcore old school classic mode guy, I actually enjoyed the change to transluecent menus, good wallpapers, and the other small things that make up the user experience.
I understand that classic mode = performance, but quite honestly, we live in a world where you can score hardware that is capable of much, much more than we use it for.
I don't know about you guys, but I'm kinda sick of having a plain old boring desktop. I understand there are millions of options (Ubuntu, Beryl, OS X, etc..) but myself, and several millions of other people, have pretty much painted ourselves in to a corner in terms of operating systems.
So cheers for MS to get at least one thing right about their new OS, the wallpapers. - Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -12/+59High resolution desktop photographs, yeah, purely an OSX innovation. Didn't Microsoft offer the first ability to use large bitmaps as a desktop background instead of small repeating patterns, way back in 1994?
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -23/+66The only remotely similar things are the 'Aurora' styled ones which had their beginnings in Longhorn ~4-5 years ago otherwise leave OSX out of this, we don't need a stupid debate on freaking wallpapers.
So, I'm digging you down for creating an unnecessary and stupid debate and for thinking there is a 'striking similarity.'
Anyway, nice wallpapers and a much better choice then what there is in XP. - nlogax, on 10/12/2007, -6/+46No, running Mac OS 10.4.8.
And no, it was not meant as an anti-MS remark.
I hope Vista rocks, for all my friends using Windows, and because competition is good. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -34/+70It's amazing how the Crapple fanboys keep trolling Vista threads, and at the same time they keep bitching when someone trolls crapple ones.
What a bunch of smug little twits! - whiskeyclone, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37I would like to point out that the site is using a Wordpress theme created by 9rules member Derek Punsalan, called '5thirtyone v2" and released under a GPL licence - though this site gives no credit to the original theme designer at all (and has in fact gone out of their way to delete any reference to the original).
Just annoys me when people do that, especially when they've made little to no changes to the stock templates - save for adding google ads and deleting the link back to the creator's site.
It's a great theme and anyone looking for the original can find it @ http://5thirtyone.com/5thirtyonev2/ - chrisbudden, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33Anyone got a mirror of this?
- piesforyou, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33It's getting absurd now. There should be a new option on the bury menu - suggest direct source. If enough people paste the same URL into that, then it gets changed.
- nlogax, on 10/12/2007, -17/+45Was looking for some new wallpapers for my MacBook, thanks.
- bentrop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20None of the wallpapers in that torrent are from the final Vista release but from various beta versions. Nothing to exciting there, mainly different shots of green leaves and grass.
I'm not saying that the final wallpapers are significantly more exciting, but they are different from this torrent. - MrSunshine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Topher06: no, that was Amiga. In 1992.
- benguild, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Link is dead man!

*****! - woranl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Bubbleshare link doesn't work again... what a useless photo sharing site
- flash200, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"Ever" translates as, "in the last 5 minutes, which is as far back as I can remember" :) Eternity just isn't what it used to be. Oh, and I also wanted to mention that...
...that was the BEST POST EVER! It was SENSATIONAL, RETICULATED, LUGUBRIOUS!!! - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -49/+57@estvir
Sit down at an OS X machine, click on System Prefernces > Desktop and Screen Savers. Click on the "Abstract" category. Behold! burstaneurysm was just pointing out the similarity which I noticed as well... not because I'm a fanboy but (drum roll) because it's true. The only people here "creating an unnecessary and stupid debate" are people who can't read a valid comment like that without overreacting as you have. - datagod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I am not "stunned". I did not fall out of my chair, I did not start drooling....come on people, this is just a bunch of pictures after all. It is not like falling out of an airplane or hearing that the President died or something.
I am a but curious why so many Digg submitters exaggerate so much i.e. "Most addictive game ever!!" "STUNNING screenshots!!" - bieber, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10If the theme is GPL'ed, and the site doesn't both say that it's GPL'ed and relicense his changes under the GPL, then he's not only a jackass but also a copyright infringer.
- SEMW, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11>Of course, you should expect to be buried for saying so as nothing in Vista
>was copied or inspired by anything else ever. It's all original and 100%
>pure Microsoft innovation.
Well, no; what you should expect to be buried for is comparing *stupid* things. Like; ooh look, the mouse cursors are both the same shape! Look at these two dialogue boxes; they both include the word "the"!! They both use eye-candy !!!
An OS is a lot more than just its wallpapers, startup sounds, and pretty colours. It is certainly true that there exist parts of Vista which were "inspired" by other OSs. Ditto for Mac OS. Ditto for Linux. But try to prove that Windows as a whole is copied from Mac OS because its WALLPAPERS bare resemblence if you look at them slightly skew is just stupid. - chrisbachmann, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I guess we need a Godwin's Law like term for PC/Mac discussions.
- Brajeshwar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Try these
http://www.flickr.com/photos/brajeshwar/sets/72157594337336752/ - honeycut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7bubbleshare popped. mmm like bubble wrap.
- cr3ative, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This isn't the correct photo pack - wasted download.
None of the thumbnails pictured are in that pack, and they're mostly "leafy/nature" ones. Nothing abstract which are the nicer ones :) - thbt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Trouble with Windows wallpapers is that most people run their apps maximized. I can't remember the last time I saw my wallpaper.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6before I grab the torrent does anyone know if any of the wallpapers are widescreens?
-wolf - mpancha, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8the real question is, where did apple steal the wallpapers from? As much as the fanboys hate it, Apple = Microsoft.
This comes from a tech fanboy, I use Windows, Apple, and Linux. The all equally work, and they all equally suck. - rpike, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8While I can agree they are minutely similar, I like the Vista ones more. Oh and I am an Apple fanboy.
- Milan123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's a fake pack, some wallpapers still contain the watermarks from various stock photo sites.
- ku16610, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9isn`t posting copyrighted files not a good idea
someone should go read there vista EULA more. - Henaro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why are they all of leaves?
- rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6To bring this slightly more on topic...
I think the Linspire guys have the right idea. Take a secure and constantly improving OS, and slap a 'familiar' user space on it (aka rip off Windows). Where possible, improve on it. Definitely put effort into removing the rough edges.
Set it up with the useful stuff. I'm not talking about 14 different flavours of emacs, I'm talking about an easy to use mail client (that won't barf on crappy Outlook messages). One of Star/Open Office set up as the default application to open MS format documents. Something that will play MP3s without doing open case surgery on the cpu.
Don't make the user pick from 51 different blogging tools, pick one for them as the default, and give them the ability to try the other ones when/if they want to.
'Hide' the command line. A nice GUI secretly backed by a powerful command line increases the usefulness of both of them.
Copy the 'secret sauce' of Vista. You don't need to worry about some of it. Heck, security is pretty much covered, just make sure to install a firewall, and make it trivial to set up additional non-root users. And quite a few of the other features have to do with business integration. Your home consumer isn't going to have $1 mil already invested in crap like Exchange servers and SQL Server, so no need to bust a nut trying to duplicate that.
In other words, focus on creating a really good user experience, whilst blatantly ripping off (the good bits of) Vista.
Now for the killer - make it available on a Live CD or Knoppix style of distro. Give people a no risk way of trying it out to see if it works for them. Hand these CDs out like candy. - AeroSquid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3duggmirror does not help with downloads guys
- flash200, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Changing the wallpaper is such a hassle, it's easier to just buy a new computer with a new operating system. I can't wait to see what wallpaper they come out with for the next version of Vista.
/sarcasm - shadowsurfr1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Duggmiror doesn't work. Here's an album with 79 wallpapers with a download link on that page:
http://www.bubbleshare.com/album/62706/overview - igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i agree...
even being a total mac fanboy, i think these are really nice :D - archiesteel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5EULAs have nothing to do with copyrights.
Let me put it this way: yes, redistributing copyrighted images *is* illegal, but it has nothing to do with EULAs. The legality of EULAs is questionable at best, and in some countries (the UK, notably) they are most certainly invalid. Copyrights, however, *are* valid. In other words, the warning was correct, but the reference to EULAs was not. - wesmith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4lol, could be great wallpapers IF the link worked! get it sorted and TORRENT THE FILE! before you add it to digg, because this always happens, people submit stories and if its "DOWNLOAD THIS!" it going to get swamped! just torrent it !
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why would you be dugg down? You are simply noting that default backgrounds that ship with any computer have never been as nice as stuff you could find elsewhere...
The OS X screens are OK (I kind of like the island ones) but I can still do better elsewhere. The random color ones are interesting but again stuff like DeviantArt has even cooler stuff if you like that short of thing. - Blabster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Link to the album/download updated guys : http://new.photos.yahoo.com/hak_labs/album/576460762350200250/
- mufasa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4i get a page not found, but the site's logo is there, so i'm wondering if they have removed them.. is it legal to give these wallpapers out ??
- Tordenflesk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Uh, i've already got all the RTM wallpapers + all the ones that didn't make it to RTM right here. There certainly were some ok looking ones, but i still prefer Customize.org and Deviantart.com for my wallpaper/skinning needs. Windows Wallpapers have allways been rubbish. And, don't think you're getting away here OSX. That's the dullest collection of photoshop-play i've seen in a long time. Don't just think tat because you've got a tiger-skin wallpater that you're any better that Windows.
(Commence the digg-down!) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9I call it, Flashman's Law.
- Spanca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Go to any good desktop site and you'll see ones that look like these, AND yes the OS X wallpapers too. Of course they all look the same. These aren't innovative features we're talking about, they're freaking wallpapers. It's purely about style and that means that they're going to look similar.
I'm an Apple user and have been for many years. I don't see the point in slagging off Microsoft just because they have nice looking wallpapers too. - SEMW, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Of course, I didn't realise it before! Apple offers nice wallpapers, MS offers nice wallpapers -- Windows must be just a ripoff of Mac OS X!!! And that's not all -- both OSs include the colour blue somewhere in them!!! And -- and -- they both include the word "the" in their documentation at some point!!! What a rip-off!!!!!
- mucha7012, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pretty nice wallpapers. If they can just get the site back up, I can download them! :D
