- FullBleed, on 11/10/2007, -0/+18Wow. 'Whilst' and 'alotta' used in the same sentence.
Now I've seen it all. - rikwakefield, on 11/08/2007, -0/+16Yes, it's dead already :-) here's a mirror: http://duggmirror.com/design/50_Ways_to_Become_the ...
- wangarific, on 11/08/2007, -0/+14I'm a fan of #3, taking a break, but you gotta remember to come back :)
- flangle, on 11/08/2007, -0/+13Write the best is not easy, too.
- sybarite, on 11/14/2007, -1/+13Speak the English isn't either...
- SpiroPope, on 11/09/2007, -0/+11I agree with cablecanuck to a certain extent - you can teach someone to be a very competent designer. The world is full of competent designers in all disciplines. The true ground-breakers are few and far between, and what makes them such is that element that can't be taught, that comes form deep within.
- edial, on 11/14/2007, -0/+11The best part is everyone can be The Best!
- cablecanuck, on 11/09/2007, -2/+9design is not just a talent but a way of thinking and a process. design can be taught.
- theOster, on 11/08/2007, -0/+7Have you seen a man eat his own head?
Then you haven't seen everything. - Singh1, on 11/09/2007, -4/+11This can probably help you become a better designer if you are already a designer - But becoming a designer is not something you can learn, you either got it or you haven't.
- Yooree, on 11/09/2007, -0/+7Wait, if I read this and become the best designer ever, and then someone else reads it and they become the best designer ever... Who's better?
- SpiroPope, on 11/11/2007, -0/+6This is not about being a better designer, it's about being a better GRAPHIC / WEB designer. As an industrial designer, there's not much here of any relevance or interest to me, nor indeed to interior designers, furniture designers, exhibition designers etc etc. Graphic Design is about communication - to get your message across in the most effective and relevant way. If you can't communicate effectively (or even identify your audience) when you're talking about your own industry, then you need to go and sit at the back of the class for the rest of the day, and think about what you've done.
- solid12345, on 11/09/2007, -0/+4Ugh, everything is internet and web crap. Can't we print designers catch a break, is there no respect for our field anymore? Now we we have to share the title of "designer" with IT geeks who may know XHTML like the back of their hand but couldn't even tell you who or what Paul Rand, white space or CMYK is.
I just wish more website builders would get some knowledge in the basic principles of print design before they call themselves designers. - wefandango, on 11/08/2007, -2/+6i are patient

^ If you can at least manage that I'll call you the best designer ever. - SpiroPope, on 11/09/2007, -0/+4Some good points there joebarone, but I have to disagree with the point about computers not making people better designers. Whilst in many cases I am sure this is true, and the style of Bauhaus industrial design would not necessarily benefit from today's CAD packages, but take a look at automotive design today, compared with say 20 or even 10 years ago. CAD systems have enabled designers to really explore complex 3D forms and thir interactions, and tweak and fettle to get the form right in a matter of minutes. In the old days, this would be done by sculpting clay forms by hand, and the same amount of 3D 'sketching' would have taken days if not weeks. To illustrate this point, the other day I saw a Lotus Esprit parked next to a Lotus Exige - look at these 2 cars to see the positive impact that technology has had on the quality of the actual design, an not just its speed of implementation. Plus, it leaves more time to skin up that decent pot ;-)
- DDDoc, on 11/08/2007, -1/+4Me fail English? That's unpossible!
- sysconnected, on 11/08/2007, -0/+3I agree with you. I'm a designer and a coder too. I've seen terrible and horrible designs made by programmers who have no idea what contrast is. You need 10 years to become a real designer.
- orangetiki, on 11/08/2007, -1/+4Here is a much better list
http://www.gapingvoid.com/Moveable_Type/archives/0 ... - brad3378, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3I'm a fan of #51, learn proper grammar before submitting story to digg.

- dyckdownunder, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3the only reason I came to check out the comments was to see who slaughtered this guy for his grammar.
I'm actually kinda disappointed that it was only the second comment in...not the first. - sysconnected, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2You can see this story here: http://duggmirror.com/design/50_Ways_to_Become_the ...
- ojk007, on 11/09/2007, -2/+4Very in depth, whilst it goes over alotta common sense stuff, i still learnt a little.
- radjrown, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2My #1 rule is, don't force yourself to come up with something awesome. If you can afford to, take the necessary time to come up with a great design. Showers definitely help, and for me personally, a good windsurfing or surfing session always helps me clear my mind (and then the ideas start coming in).
- infamousjre, on 11/08/2007, -0/+21. Kill all the other designers
- dcmusicfusion, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2Wasn't #17 simplify!?!?!?
- mikehill33, on 11/08/2007, -0/+251 - get better hosting.
- darkmotion, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2There's no formula, but there are some methods with work better than others.
- bigredsk10, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2A workman is worth his tools. It doesnt matter whether you are using a paintbrush or a hammer or a computer, if you have quality tools you will end up with better results, because you are not fighting your tools the whole way.
- lex10, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1be the best me one day go!
- brad3378, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1If it is not something you can learn, then why do they have Design Schools?
- Joosy, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1Strange how taking a shower can inspire creative thought...
- The_Dude, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1How about 50 Ways To Not Have Your Site Dugg to Death? Someone slap that up somewhere please.
- assassinave, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1If you want to be a Superman of design the only way to obtain similar powers like he did under Earth's yellow sun is TYPOGRAPHY. The web is like a wet dream for structured, easy to read typography if you master that. I should slap this person for self promotion and the recommendation of using a texture(as a way to become a better designer).
- insomniacal, on 11/08/2007, -1/+2Way #1: Lose the exclamation points!!!
- nesibus, on 11/08/2007, -2/+350 ways to use the words Best and Ever together in a digg title, like all the other thousands before it.
- QuixoticNoob, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1Finally my dream WILL come true! :P
- bobbles, on 11/08/2007, -1/+2#51 befriend someone with a good server
- solid12345, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Glad someone agrees with me. Don't get me wrong, having good web coding skills is a great talent, I wish I had more of it. But really I think to be a truly great web designer you have to study up on years of traditional layout theory, the same principles apply.
- Chexee, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1EVER?!?!?!?!?!
- SpiroPope, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1Brilliant link, cheers!
- toggo, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Sorry for the comment hijack.
Mirror: http://duggmirror.com/design/50_Ways_to_Become_the ... - gregdigg, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1Title: 50 Ways to Become the Best Designer Ever!!!
#50: Don’t over sell yourself.
I guess if you keep your clients' expectations low, then by comparison you will seem like the best designer ever!!! - rtjin, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1Yeah great list.
- freshgrease, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1If this stuff really worked, the designer who designed this procedure wouldn't want to release the secrets to being equal or better than him. #51 Don't give your competitors an edge.
- SouthernCharm, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Number 6 always works
- timusca, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1You mean "Finally my dream WILL come true ever!!!"
