- unfinite, on 03/06/2009, -0/+5As of December 2nd, 2008 the PLE version of Maya is no longer available. Here's a download link to version 8.5 of the PLE:
http://www.brothersoft.com/autodesk-maya-download- ...
Or you can download the latest version Maya 2009 (10.0) as a 30-day trial from Autodesk here:
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/mform?siteID= ... - ksgant, on 03/06/2009, -2/+6Did Autodesk suspend the PLE (Personal Learning Edition) of Maya? I can't seem to find it anymore. It was a free version of Maya that would put watermarks on all the output, but it let you learn this VERY expensive 3D package.
If it's still out there, I'd like to know. I no longer work at a place that has Maya, but I'd like to keep my skills up. And of course, I refuse to pirate it like so many do. - ripple123, on 03/06/2009, -1/+5ahoy ye scurvy landlubber, hop aboard and hoist the mainsail!
- neonoodle, on 03/06/2009, -1/+5it's not $68,000
- Gary13579, on 03/06/2009, -0/+3FTA:
"When I first saw the dark knight movie posters I really liked them - especially one of them. I decided to try to do something similar, just for fun, but I didn’t want my character to look like Heath Ledger; I wanted to do something that was similar, but still original." - serif69, on 03/06/2009, -1/+3Considering I run Maya on my old-as-dirt 733MHz G4, I would say no.
- lowtolerance, on 03/06/2009, -0/+2It seems strange that they would discontinue it, and yet I can't seem to find it anymore, either. If you're vehemently against pirating software, I recommend figuring out a way to a student discount, as it is drastically cheaper.
- batmanz, on 03/07/2009, -0/+2Maya was better when it was owned by alias.
- Mackofalltrades, on 03/07/2009, -0/+2Or u could just go sailing.
- whoreable, on 03/06/2009, -2/+4Blender FTW.
- cubicledrone, on 03/06/2009, -3/+4Any tutorials on how to afford the $68,000 price tag?
- nrox653, on 03/07/2009, -1/+21. Get uTorrent
2. Browse to thepiratebay.org
3. Search for Maya and choose a torrent
4. Wait for download to finish
5. Install
6. Success!
Alternatively you can choose Blender, which is just as good, without the price tag that's equivalent to a ***** car. - findhostcoupons, on 03/14/2009, -0/+1Thanks Shiner76 for sharing the most helpful Maya Tutorials! I can find them very useful for myself! Good advices!
- pathouston22, on 03/06/2009, -1/+2Wait for it....

- jjones20, on 03/06/2009, -1/+2i made an awesome apple one time in 3d, and i followed a tutorial to make bob-ombs, and i was really proud of them, they turned out nice even though i was following a tutorial and it was really simple.
- ashras99, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1this link will help - http://www.cgarena.com/freestuff/tutorials/softima ...
- ashras99, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1Awesome list of tutorials for 3ds max, maya, xsi, mudbox, zbrush, photoshop, in nutshell tutorials for every 3d software - http://tutorials.cgarena.com/
- pathouston22, on 03/06/2009, -1/+2No. I ran Lightwave on a 1.33 Athlon Thunderbird back in the day making space battle animations and etc when I was in junior high. It was surviveable back then, so a decent computer nowadays would do just fine.
Unless you start getting into the real fancy stuff with advanced lighting, big effects, or heavy polygon scenes, then it becomes a PITA, even on a high end computer. - neonoodle, on 03/06/2009, -1/+2well played.
- ashras99, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1that's portfolio worthy no probs
- Animatus, on 03/07/2009, -0/+1I'd never work for you any ways! And I didn't wash my hands after going to the bathroom. That's your policy, not mine.
- IamNomad, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1youre arm and leg are not worth 5g. Maybe your kidney..
- rdolishny, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1Around ... around what? Whom? Huh?!?
- randmcnally, on 03/07/2009, -0/+1Just like Flame was better when owned by Discreet
- IamNomad, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1Yes but it runs like ***** and takes forever to render. God help you if you are trying to live mesh editing.
- ripple123, on 03/06/2009, -2/+3that title made my head hurt
- Animatus, on 03/07/2009, -1/+1Nice. I just applied to Alias.
- unfinite, on 03/06/2009, -1/+1You can get Maya for $4995. And sure, yeah, that's a lot of money for a piece of software, but with Maya and a computer you have all you need to run a business. Compared to the overhead that most other businesses have that's nothing.
If you upgrade to the latest version for $1795 every year, and buy a new computer every other year, you're always up to date. That's ALL you have to pay for. Not that you even HAVE to upgrade. Most studios use the version they started with at the beginning of project (tv show or movie or game or anything). They don't upgrade every year, that would cause too many hassles and they're doing fine without the latest version, why bother.
Student versions are relatively cheap too if you want to learn. But unless you're serious about making this your career that can still be a lot of money for a hobby. Though there are MUCH more expensive hobbies to have. Anyways, that's why they have a trial version. - blacktriangle, on 03/07/2009, -1/+13ds Max FTW!
- jaygeeze, on 03/07/2009, -1/+1Maya is a great application, but it cost an arm and a leg.
- jmanfivek, on 03/07/2009, -1/+1You're fired.
- Ericdigital, on 03/08/2009, -1/+1quit talking out of your ass

- danwallace, on 03/06/2009, -4/+3Do I need a high-end computer to start getting into doing some of this?
- bigdoglj52, on 03/06/2009, -3/+2dugg for one page
- jcoops, on 03/06/2009, -2/+0Not much on the animation front but a good page nonetheless. cheers
- nurbsenvi, on 03/06/2009, -2/+0You win 9000 internetz sir
- CodeSucker, on 03/08/2009, -2/+0Guys - careful when using PirateBay, make sure you virus scan everything.. lots of free software but also lot's of malware as well
Also, read the comments on the torrents - if lots of folks are screaming 'virus' it's probably true - KineticShampoo, on 03/06/2009, -3/+1Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: tl;dr - almondfilter3, on 03/06/2009, -4/+1Some cool stuff. Though things like the Gladiator and Joker ones are cool for practicing, but I wouldn't advise portfolio-ing them up. Thats like doing a light saber effect - been done and seen before. And if you doing something like that...might as well get the facial structure of Ledger right. Thats completely off, though the modeling and processes are strong.
- rl421403, on 03/06/2009, -5/+1cool resource. :)
