- sceptic101, on 02/19/2009, -4/+49Slow up still trying to get cat to press the button to agree to the EULA and continue re-installing
- DraganDragan, on 02/19/2009, -3/+41VideoCopilot.net is the best after effects tutorial site ... EVER.
Most of the tutorials mentioned are from that site.
Hail Andrew Kramer! - Secret7000, on 02/19/2009, -2/+31Great to see an AE article on the front page. FYI: all the visual effect in Heroes are composited (finalised) in Adobe After Effects. I'm an AE compositor myself. w00t.
- gh0sst, on 02/19/2009, -4/+21Bookmarked!
- Secret7000, on 02/19/2009, -0/+15I can't deny how good Andrew Kramer is, but when people assume stuff I've done is from one of his tutorials I nerd rage.
- JKAL, on 02/19/2009, -1/+13dugg for AE and in one page.!
- PixelMagic, on 02/19/2009, -0/+11I don't know if anyone will find these useful, but I've written a few little mini tutorials for After Effects. They are visual effects related.

- craeyon, on 02/19/2009, -3/+11Andrew Kramer is god
that HUD tutorial was awesome - akoostik, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5I've seen so many blatant rip offs of Andrew Krammer's tutorials in online video contests! The only thing that pisses me off is how obvious it is...
Like this for example: http://www.poptent.net/media/9440
and this for the same contest! http://www.poptent.net/media/8690 - gemlarin, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5Ya know, over half of these tuts are taken from Video Co-Pilot and I do not see this blog crediting them once.
In fact, you could just skip this blog all together and head right over to video copilot http://www.videocopilot.net/ and get them right from the source and skip the blogspam all together. - PixelMagic, on 02/19/2009, -1/+6I am a visual effects artist, and there is nothing wrong with Andrew's tutorials. They teach you the basics, from which you can then expound upon with your own experimenting. Not everyone does visual effects professionally either, so Andrew's site is good for people doing it as a hobby as well.
Granted, most people in the industry use Shake, Nuke, or Fusion, but AE can hold it's own too. Node based programs are just easier to navigate than AE's layer/comp based approach.
Your comment is nothing more than troll bait. Which I took, but still... - inactive, on 02/19/2009, -2/+7Well aren't all tutorials ubiquitous? The point is to learn the techniques, It's not that hard once you learn them to apply them to your own personal taste later on.Anyway if you're working on a project for a client you're pretty much told exactly what it is they need you to do.
- brimg87, on 02/19/2009, -1/+5I wish there was a category on digg for video editing links like these. I see so many CSS and design tutorials, but this is the first I've seen of anything to do with video editing/motion graphics.
- PixelMagic, on 02/19/2009, -0/+4"I was surprised to see an article on Digg.com that featured After Effects on the front page. Usually it’s a bunch of posts about cats using Photoshop or drawing cats with Photoshop and occasionally cats teaching Photoshop but it’s pretty cool to see some good old fashioned After Effects. I say Digg it!"
-Andrew Kramer - pathouston22, on 02/19/2009, -0/+4As well as demo reels that are based off his tutorials. Good job, you followed a tutorial, now do something origional.
- rheaume, on 02/19/2009, -1/+4Video copilot, worship it
- Secret7000, on 02/19/2009, -3/+6Undeniably great but ubiquitous. There's a difference between someone who can follow a tutorial & someone who is creative.
- threepm, on 02/19/2009, -0/+3Dug for Andrew Kramer's VIDEO COPILOT. Best tutorial site ever.
- splinechaser, on 02/19/2009, -0/+3Well, I don't think you need to go to school. Just get good, anyway you can. Listen, read, and understand. Look at the world around you all the time and notice things. This will make one a better VFX artist.
That being said, its very easy to find AE people with no clue how to comp, doing this job for a living. I would recommend as I snarkily said, getting to know a node based application like Nuke or Shake. You will have a better sense of the fundamentals of compositing if you do. AE does a little too much for you, and is too kludgy to work with most of the time. Also it's not scriptable from the shell... this makes it suck hard for a facility.
Great for a kid in a basement. - non00b, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2it's photoshop on steroids!
Finally the list of AE tips I was waiting for. - Pipsqueak, on 02/20/2009, -0/+2Same here. Three cheers for 'composting' in front of a computer everyday - one keyframe at a time.
- Thorthewhore, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2I need to find some good motion tutorials. =( but these after effects ones are amazing.
- demafleez, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2video editing and video compositing are two entirely different things. AE =compositing, FCP/Avid = video editing
- PixelMagic, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2That's just my screenname. I didn't say anything about working there.
- scarz99, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2Videocopilot.net is where it's at. Best tutorials on the internets for After Effects.
- Secret7000, on 02/19/2009, -1/+3AE demo reel here, in case anyone was wondering - might as well post it up.
http://vimeo.com/972497 - wild, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2I am not. We have a bunch of weekend photoshop designers, why shouldn't we add some weekend editors to the mix too?
- greenkermit, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2good collection.
- pstine, on 02/19/2009, -1/+3Exactly. I've pretty much learned AE on my own through tutorials and seeing other examples of work, then trying to recreate them myself in my own compositions.
Also using AE as a direct technical standpoint, like tracking footage, green screening stuff, and rotoscoping (dont we all just love to rotoscope?) can all be learned online or in the classroom, but in the end it comes down to the user perfecting it, and also what you're told to do. - wenomspitta, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2just bookmarking with a comment, never mind
- AskAboutMe, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2Dont forget about ae.tutsplus.com
- slightlyoffbeat, on 02/19/2009, -1/+3Jordan STFU
You have an issue with people abusing the tutorials, that's understandable. Andrew Kramer himself devotes lots of time and resources to provide people with FREE tutorials. That is awesome and I applaud him for it. As a filmmaker, I like to be behind the camera but I do not have the time and resources to learn a program such as After Effects. Andrew has helped me understand the basics to do what I need to do, and I try my best to take it beyond the tutorials so that I can create something that is unique and personal.
Why are you so angry? Does someone posting free tutorials on the net really make you that pissed? - AskAboutMe, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2I love Noupe! One of the best designer blogs out there.
Next to the Envato Network of course. - inactive, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2Indeed.
- Commonwealth, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2Seriously, that pisses me off bad. Professionals will always catch it, but in a contest or something where you spend hours coming up with an original concept, it's pretty damn annoying to get beat by a videocopilot tutorial.
- PixelMagic, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2Glorious.
- korimickster, on 02/19/2009, -2/+4AE is the new PS.
- splinechaser, on 02/19/2009, -0/+1motion blur your mattes. If you have to, use reel smart motion blur. When the arm drops in front of the logo it looks stuttery.
If your reel is to get a job, don't explain everything on it. Not everything needs to be labeled. Simple breakdowns are better.
If you are trying to impress your mum, this reel works fine.
Keep it under 2:30. Only put your best work on a reel. - v0ider, on 02/19/2009, -0/+1Abercrombie & Fitch?
- vijayanand12003, on 02/20/2009, -0/+1great tutorials thanks
http://bestwebsitetemplates.org - splinechaser, on 02/19/2009, -1/+2Have you tried learning Shake... or Nuke, something a little more professional?
- Secret7000, on 02/19/2009, -0/+1All of the roto was done in AE. It was experimental at the time - motion blurring roto mattes in AE is a nightmare. Since the footage I was working with was 25i, I halfed the framerate of the footage & rotoed each field separately. This reduced the need to motion blur.
I've now been working with Silhouette Roto, which is a far more competent tool. The reel, as you will see, is a couple of years old now. My new reel will be up within a few months, & less than 3 minutes (I hear a lot of opinions on the length of the reel). The breakdowns are great for unsavvy people, but at the most I need 1 or 2 of them. I understand this - the rest can be explained on the breakdown printout I send along with the reel. - Secret7000, on 02/20/2009, -0/+1Employees of Emmy-winning effects house Stargate Digital?
The effects house I hope to eventually work for (Double Negative) use a modified Shake build as their compositing tool. I don't have the money to run Shake at the moment. - identifiedlogo, on 02/19/2009, -0/+1Great job comrade when you are done make typography for
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6jluj_le-cafe-ol ... - splinechaser, on 02/19/2009, -1/+2In my time at ILM I learned of something a little better than lightwrap. Call it "plate wrap" instead of adding any light, it simply adds the surround influence of the plate. usually very wide and very subtle.. perhaps you could add that to your lightwrap tut, since that is in essence what you are doing.
