- arjie, on 07/05/2008, -0/+20Doesn't move like an animal, but I was stunned when I saw this video of BigDog in action. It holds its balance even when kicked! I mean, for someone who remembers just ten years ago as Discovery Channel showed videos of how tough it was to have a robot walk and hold balance, this was stunning.
Boston Dynamics' BigDog: http://youtube.com/watch?v=W1czBcnX1Ww
My claim to non-offtopicness is the fact that this robot has an animal's name. Sort of. ;) - inactive, on 07/05/2008, -1/+15It's always bothered me that in every single BigDog video, they seem to have this urge to kick it several times. I mean, I get it, it's cool and all, but really, the way we treat our robots, it's no wonder they're eventually gonna rise up and overthrow us. It's only a matter of time before we make a robot that gets sick of this ***** and decides to kick back.

Sentence fragment! If so, then WHAT? WHAT???
/grammarnerd
Imagine if we had some sort of machine to carry our physical burdens, like a robotic mule or something. It would be great! If we put wheels on it, we could probably even ride it and drive it around, like some sort of "horeseless carriage," if you will. - inactive, on 07/05/2008, -2/+11I like doing the robot when I go out to night clubs.
- mathwiz1991, on 07/05/2008, -0/+8The guy who worked on the fly gave a presentation at a convention I was at and he not only explained how it was made and everything like in the video but in more detail, but also uses of microrobots like the fly, such as for surveillance in the military. Thousands of these flies with tiny cameras could easily scope out an entire region within hours. Just don't let Bush get his hands on them to spy on us
- Sornos, on 07/05/2008, -2/+7In a few years (or in Soviet Russia), robot will be able to do you!
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -3/+8Honestly, I'd prefer to see animals that move just like robots.
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4The robot will be doing me doing the robot? Mind boggling!
- Tyrghast, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4How so, like beckoning little children closer?
Oh you mean like in 'Thriller'... gotcha. - SquigglyP, on 07/05/2008, -1/+5"If this research one day spawns an uncomplaining robotic mule to carry our physical burdens or dogs that can save children from fiery buildings without fear of harm, then perhaps it might also be able to save us from sentence fragments."
- Thrilltone, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3"If this research one day spawns an uncomplaining robotic mule to carry our physical burdens or dogs that can save children from fiery buildings without fear of harm then maybe it can even create a robot that will automatically repair websites that have been overcome by excessive traffic."
- DDRRE, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3Mirror anyone?
- Frost9999, on 07/05/2008, -1/+4Robots that can carry burdens? They are called cars.

- Seth024, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Frontpaged for more than 2 hours and nobody posted the TED talk about this.

(if it isn't interesting at first, skip to about halfway, that's where the robots are) - mihkeltt, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1what is the tune at the end of the flying robot video? if i remember correctly it's possibly led zeppelin, but which song? thanks.
- BowieX, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1It looks like I lose the hotly contested grammarnerd joke contest; however, grammar wins!
- mastern, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I'm stunned they didn't mention BigDog. Just another writer not doing his homework I guess.

- jbrand45, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1I, for one, welcome and bow before our one-day Robot Masters.
- sab0tage, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I thought it was the most convincing, both in movement and how it looked.
- ByteMePlenty, on 04/30/2009, -0/+0Man can invent any robot to do anything he wants - theres no doubt. But can he give it WILL? Actions based on a million different calculations - fine - thats what they have always been able to do. But I will salute the person who can make a bot that wills.
- inactive, on 07/06/2008, -0/+0It would be grate to get my stuff across the border.

The suspense is killing me. Save me Bot-Hound! - tygresss62, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0I think I understand where ur coming from. But moving like robots, Nah!
- tygresss62, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0If they can do that w/o using live animals, that would be great. There would be no more cruelty to animals I would expect!!!
- tygresss62, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0I think I understand where your coming from. But moving like robots, Nah!
- tygresss62, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0Looks like something from a horror movie. I would run and hide if I saw that thing coming my way. Doesn't resemble a dog at all. Looks like a giant bug. Shouldbe called BigBugg or something. LOL
- Brassbud, on 07/05/2008, -1/+0That fish seemed the most realistic, although the tailfin lagged behind the body a little too much. I wish there had been more footage of the fly.
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -3/+2This story would be more interesting if the robots moved like Michael Jackson.
