- ilikesboobs, on 11/23/2007, -0/+5What I don't like about blog designs is that they all have that same, "list your news", "see other people's comments", with graphics added to those section. The pictures and graphics may be creative but I just don't feel theres any creativity put into the layout of the sites. They all seem the same probably because they all use the same blog add-ons. The sites in the article are all in two columns where the left is the updates and the right is archived posts and categories. I just feel there are so many different ways you can design your site while still having a news/comment system with out doing it the way its being done right now.
- iamaelephant, on 11/23/2007, -1/+5So the definition or "excellent" in terms of blog design is "***** loads of wasted space".
- krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4exactly. and any of these that get aggregated would crash and/or result in some ridiculous bandwidth bill. there's a reason why real coders don't use 200kb background images for their websites.
- gudnbluts, on 11/23/2007, -0/+3In terms of any design. It's why I always left the design up to the designers when I was doing web development (within limits, of course). As a programmer, I just love having everything right there on the screen. Unfortunately 90% of the rest of the world seems to think clutter is bad design (and are probably right).
- damm, on 11/23/2007, -1/+4Why not just spend some time with CSS Zen Garden? FreeCSSThemes? blah blah blah blah.
Make your own. - inactive, on 11/23/2007, -0/+290% crap, 10% beautiful designs. This is based on extensive scientific studies and statistical polling of the masses... of course.
- eliburford, on 11/23/2007, -1/+3Most of these can be seen on galleries such as CSSMania or WebCreme, but there are a few here I haven't seen around before. Very nice designs.
- tempusrob, on 11/23/2007, -0/+1Code?? Come on now ... text/plain should be enough for anyone!
- gothicform, on 11/23/2007, -0/+1Dugg down for the hideousness of that page.... had to take a second look as I thought it was really a spam page (and what's with it having so many diggs and so few comments?)
- kmjmu, on 11/23/2007, -1/+1Two of my friends from DC have pretty good sites. One has a pretty good design blog (both the design and the topics she blogs about) at badassideas.com and I currently work with a guy who did a cool blog/personal site using all CSS and JavaScript (and a pretty funny domain name) displayawesome.com
- Shutter, on 11/23/2007, -1/+1Every blog has *some* sort of general structure -- that's the limitation of the medium. You have to work *within* those constraints many times for blogs -- you can't expect the designer to completely change your expectations of the medium.
- samuel514, on 11/23/2007, -1/+1I personally don't think they need to be super innovative, just to be good example of pretty, useful, etc. design that gonna give you more ideas.
- samuel514, on 11/23/2007, -1/+1Some great inspiration design in this article, I always like the Smashing Magazine content.
- drunkenirish, on 11/23/2007, -2/+2I'm sorry, but 90% of those blogs are not innovative in any way...they are just a spin on the same "center column, right side nav" layout. A few of them are really nice and inventive, but just because they use a shinier, more vectorized graphic or a better combination of colors doesn't mean they are creating inspired designs...they're just changing what is already there.
- Raiku, on 11/23/2007, -1/+1They are really nice designs for traditional blog designs. However, if you want to break the interface, I did like to see a Horizontal View of a Blog. Hovering Mouse-Over preview texts. Multiple Vertical Columns. And other nice ideas that are simple but imaginable.
- anthonylawrence, on 11/23/2007, -1/+1Loved the original smashingmagazine post. Love the follow up. This is simply great! =)
- kxhoopshooter, on 11/23/2007, -1/+1Yeah me and my partner have been trying to come up with our own designs, none of this copying stuff. Check out our current modified one at Can The World Hear Me http://www.cantheworldhearme.com Currently we are trying to revamp the whole thing
- jkirk7msa, on 11/23/2007, -1/+1I digg the eye candy at 1 AM. Simon Reynolds' blog is by far my favorite.
- inactive, on 11/23/2007, -1/+1schwing!
- sd12013, on 11/27/2007, -0/+0As a web designer, you have to design to the lowest common denominator. There's "***** loads of wasted space" because what fills up one person's screen doesn't fill up someone else's with a higher resolution setting. I'm guessing you have a higher setting than what is most common, giving you "***** loads" of space. "Liquid" templates usually fix the issue by adjusting the content to fit the screen resolution but can do some things that aren't so aesthetically pleasing.
- Rageapples, on 11/27/2007, -0/+0It's nice to see that a few of them break away from the standard layout to some degree. It's not exactly easy to be all that innovative when several modules are thrown down by default. I think more web designers need to just design for this stuff with no regard at all to what's there as far as default set up.
- mban23, on 11/23/2007, -12/+6The list is very good, as usually. Also, there are some great inspirational designs on the list.
- johnburk, on 11/23/2007, -11/+4Some are average, others are amazing.
I personally like the design of http://www.modeblog.nl
