- werries, on 10/21/2008, -1/+12I use GIMP almost exclusively, and thats after I went and learned about 90% of the stuff usable on photoshop. You just have to get used to one interface or the other, and I really don't like using photoshop anymore.
- annjay, on 10/20/2008, -0/+11Few of them are really useful as I am using GIMP sometimes just to change the flavor :)
- ABombbmoBA, on 10/21/2008, -1/+10Yeah but did you actually PAY for the privilege to use Photoshop? GIMP is actually pretty amazing... considering what you pay for it... (LEGALLY)
- nrox653, on 10/21/2008, -5/+13Yeah, someone should really fix GIMP's interface. It's a complete mess compared to Photoshop.
- chickenloco, on 10/21/2008, -0/+7Thanks. I used getpaint.net and GIMP - they are both fantastic alternatives to Photoshop.
- vocalyouth, on 10/21/2008, -0/+7GIMP is a great alternative to Photoshop. It can do a lot of the same things, it's just a matter of adapting. The UI could use a change, but it's very much a usable program. I've been trying to use it more and more lately as Ubuntu runs about 5 times faster than vista on my machine.
- Galaxylander, on 10/21/2008, -0/+4I went from GIMP to Photoshop, and I felt that they just stuffed everything in a billion menus in Ps.
- gcgirlbiz, on 10/21/2008, -0/+4Thank you for the tuts! I can't afford Photoshop and have always wanted to be able to use GIMP to it's fullest potential as such. I've figured out most things.. however these helped even more. Yay!

- feyded, on 10/21/2008, -1/+4Well... yeah. Photoshop has been around for nearly 20 years and has a large development team with huge financial backing. One would hope it would be a little more intuitive to use.
- TrellSaracen, on 10/21/2008, -0/+2> However, you have to admit, Photoshop itself doesn't adhere to any OS's standards, really. I guess it's better on the Mac, but in Windows it's nearly completely its own interface, and doesn't really look like any other Windows programs.
That's exactly what I'm complaining about. :-) - rondo, on 10/20/2008, -1/+3Nice tutorials. Thanks.
- Phillycat81, on 10/21/2008, -0/+2I need this in my life. Trying out GIMP for the first time.
- lordspidey, on 10/21/2008, -0/+2Yes i have been wanting a nice list of gimp tutorials for awhile.
GIMP FTW! - ethana2, on 10/21/2008, -1/+3Well, now that they overhauled the core to eliminate the bottleneck there, I hear they're going to pick up some GUI experts and overhaul that.
GIMP does what I need it to do. That's going to be true for more and more people as time goes on. - ethana2, on 10/21/2008, -1/+2HARDER!
...gosh dangit, can't find the rob and elliot comic where he cuts his finger off with a katana, and they're driving to the hospital... - darkmagician777, on 10/21/2008, -1/+2I found GIMP to be a lot user unfriendly - though I know GIMP sticking to its open source format. I would really love a more user friendly version. Does not mean GIMP should look like photoshop, Paintshop pro Did not. There is something to be said about Design and usability as very attractive elements of a program, regardless if its free or not. Going from Personal experience and what I read on line, people cant /dont make the switch to Linux because they want to use Photoshop, Illustrator, or Paintshop Pro which are not on Linux. WINE does not like these programs yet.
- llamaspit, on 10/21/2008, -0/+1Although I don't agree completely about the cross-platform thing, I understand your felings about it. I do agree that a program should take full advantage of the OS, not only in interface, but memory handling, cpu, etc.
However, you have to admit, Photoshop itself doesn't adhere to any OS's standards, really. I guess it's better on the Mac, but in Windows it's nearly completely its own interface, and doesn't really look like any other Windows programs.
But I think mostly the issue is, if I want to open an image, work with layers and that sort of thing, I haven't gotten the hang of it in Gimp, although I haven't really tried because I can't be bothered. I know this is a copout of sorts, but I think that's the sentiment of many Photoshop users when they try to work with Gimp. - TrellSaracen, on 10/21/2008, -0/+1I always felt Paint Shop Pro 7's interface was better than either one of them.
Haven't had a chance to try the more recent PSPs, though, thanks to Corel demanding I register the damn DEMO >_ - nrox653, on 10/21/2008, -1/+2What's with all the tutorials hitting the front page these days? I've seen 10 in the past week.
- theadvinci, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1Now only one question remains... How many people actually use GIMP?
- Norumeni, on 10/21/2008, -4/+5Does it bug anyone else when people write "The GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program)" like it's something so special and super impressive sounding? I think it's ridiculous, and I'm pretty sure they came out a while ago and told everyone to stop calling it The GIMP because it looked dumb to do the all caps thing, and instead just call it Gimp.

- ethana2, on 10/21/2008, -1/+1Plus, photoshop CS4 doesn't run on Ubuntu, **** that. OSX doesn't work on my Ubuntu Dell at /all/.
- almondfilter3, on 10/21/2008, -1/+1Ooo nice, number 10, lightsaber effect, a sure way to drag down your demo reel. Nothing like doing something thats been done a million times before.
- llamaspit, on 10/21/2008, -2/+2This is great, it would be cool if more people used Gimp.
But the point people make about "just being able to adapt" is really important. Fire up Open Office for a Word user and see how long it takes them to "adapt". Not very long at all. Put a Photoshop user in front of Gimp and they'll likely want to beat you with a hammer.
Why is this important? It's like this. To reach critical mass, you have to appeal to a large number of your intended audience. The stubbornness of the Gimp developers in not creating a "familiar" interface impedes the adoption of Gimp as a true viable alternative. Sure, the program may technically perform the same actions as Photoshop, but I would dare say that until they change the interface, there won't be many help wanted ads stating "must know Gimp".
If Linux zealots (I'm one) want Linux to be the future of the PC (I do), then it's high time that the developers of programs like Gimp to start using the same logic in terms of potential user base that the closed source companies do.
In other words, a handful of programmers ain't gonna change the legions of hardcore Photoshop people's minds. Why not give the people what they want? - fadango, on 10/21/2008, -9/+9I have used photoshop for years, and gimp always just seems like much more work to do simple things.
- TrellSaracen, on 10/21/2008, -2/+1On the one hand, I'm totally against the "Cross-platform" mentality. I think a program running on Windows should look and feel like a Windows program, regardless of what system it was originally designed for. Adobe and other companies that insist on creating their own look-and-feel that's absolutely nothing like any of the target OSes JUST so they can "write once run anywhere" are an absolute scourge.
But on the other hand, I completely agree with everything llamaspit just said.
In a way, I guess both approaches can be summed up by saying that it's the developer who needs to "just adapt," rather than the user. - rheaume, on 10/21/2008, -6/+1Photoshop(tm). Use it.
- DeathGod321, on 10/21/2008, -12/+7I have a feeling these are the only 30.
(that's right, bury me harder) - BrokenCircle, on 10/21/2008, -10/+3I could write 30+ Exceptional MS Paint Tutorials and at no point would that validate MS Paint's legitimacy as an art program. GIMP is one of the single worse things Linux has going for it.
