- joshcxa, on 03/05/2009, -0/+14who would have thought i'd see tuts for 3d apps on the front page of digg. Good list for the max users out there
- Julie188, on 03/05/2009, -0/+9Wow, great list of tutorials.
- almondfilter3, on 03/05/2009, -0/+8Haha I love Maya, but I see some great ***** done on Max still. Companies use it. No one uses paint for any real use.
- bizkit00, on 03/05/2009, -1/+93DS is for game modeling what Maya is for movie modeling. Check out a few game modeling job listings and shut your dirty mouth.

Tons of tutorials and whatnot for all autodesk products... - joshcxa, on 03/05/2009, -0/+6except 3ds max and maya are owned by the one company
- dinosaurblood, on 03/05/2009, -0/+5"3ds max is alright, but if you want to get professional you need to start getting into programs like Alias, Catia and Maxwell render."
Alias = company that no longer exists (bought by Autodesk)
Catia = some ancient CAD software
Maxwell Render = Render engine that works INSIDE 3D Studio Max (among other packages) - ortucis, on 03/05/2009, -0/+5blacktriangle just recommended Maya over Max as the 'industry standard'. There are a lot of pros around here on Digg and with 'pros', I meant 'vaginas'.
- DJgloi, on 03/05/2009, -1/+6if anyone is interested this is the mother of all CG info:
http://www.cgsociety.org/
in the forums there are links to thousands of tutorials for every 3D package - NiftyG, on 03/05/2009, -0/+4There really isn't a "Hollywood standard"
Most studios here in LA use Maya or Max. XSI is also popular. Lightwave is on the decline, but still used by a few studios (Zoic is the biggest, but they also use Maya) A few special effects houses still cling to their Houdini licenses. - ortucis, on 03/05/2009, -0/+4"3ds max is alright, but if you want to get professional.."
It's kinda hard to take you seriously after that. - DarkTrancer, on 03/05/2009, -0/+4http://www.3d-palace.com
Has loads of free tuts and loads of training dvds too. - DarkTrancer, on 03/05/2009, -0/+4zing
- Shogi, on 03/05/2009, -1/+5Fantastic tutorials, and even better most are with non-third party stuff.
Here's some other places I've found:

http://www.3dk.org/

http://www.cgtutorials.com/c1/Autodesk_3ds_max - Shogi, on 03/05/2009, -1/+5Max and Maya are evenly matched. Maya is geared more towards full blown scenes and animations, and Max more towards single models. Both are fully capable of anything you need/want to do.
Personally I HATE Maya's interface. Max all the way for me. - inactive, on 03/05/2009, -0/+4Maya is great for Linux/Mac users, I got to try it once and it wasn't the same as it is on Windows if i remember correctly but it's still cool as hell.
If you're just a hobbyist, and since it's an option to just not use Max anymore i'm guessing it is, you can probably play around with smaller free 3D softwares. I'm guessing Blender/Yafray can be set up on OS X like it can Win / Linux.
But no software is like Max, of course. You'd just have to deal with the differences; at a certain point you could probably do what you wanted regardless of how easy/hard the software makes it. - dinosaurblood, on 03/05/2009, -1/+4Buried, Maya is inferior.
- blacktriangle, on 03/05/2009, -1/+4There's always Maya...
- joshcxa, on 03/05/2009, -0/+3how?
- DarkTrancer, on 03/05/2009, -0/+3Someone asks what Editor they used you tell them the Renderer?
Nice - NiftyG, on 03/05/2009, -0/+3It's a great package, but I wonder how much attention the software will get when Autodesk already owns Maya and Max.
- dinosaurblood, on 03/05/2009, -0/+3Lets start with stability, modeling, Mental Ray implementation, physics, particles, and render passes.
- Shogi, on 03/05/2009, -2/+5The S stands for studio numbnuts.
- bizkit00, on 03/05/2009, -1/+3depends on where you look:
http://www.blizzard.com/us/jobopp/senior-3d-enviro ... - rheaume, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2I use this at work so favorited, thanks :)
- rexxhunt, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2http://www.mininova.com now you dont have to use blender
- Vivifyer, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2its different at every studio. dont forget XSI softimage.
- ortucis, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2theundone, everyone is busy here posting their favorite 3D app as 'professional and easy'. Just download trials and start experimenting, best way to decided what will work for you.
- AdmiralAcbar, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2I'll stick with Blender, thanks...
- NiftyG, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2Alias went off the market 10 years ago and was replaced by Maya.
- Callidus, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2Anyone know why Lightwave 3d is the Hollywood standard?
In the past I used 3ds Max for a while, just recently dabbled with Maya, and I'm looking at learning Lightwave over Maya just cause it seems like it's the most used in the industry, having been used for a lot of recent high profile films, just wondering what makes it so preferred. - dullnation, on 03/05/2009, -1/+3These are indeed very good, anyone know of more decent (and recent) 3dsmax tutorials? There's loads of old, and some REALLY old ones still in google searches that use slightly backward methods to achieve things that can be done in more intuitive ways due to new features...
- hpayer, on 03/05/2009, -1/+3if you want to bet on future of CG, go with Softimage... Autodesk just bought them.
- chrisroman, on 03/05/2009, -1/+3You've got a point there. I don't think any one will hire me for my advanced experience with Paint.
- koldmilk, on 03/05/2009, -4/+6More of a maya person but still really awesome.
- whoreable, on 03/05/2009, -6/+8Blender FTW.
- theundone, on 03/05/2009, -1/+2I only skimmed the surface of 3DS Max several years ago but would like to pick it up again.
Is Max a good one to start with or should I try something else instead? - quentinp, on 03/05/2009, -0/+1Too bad I lost my $4K under the couch somewhere, so I don't think i'll be buying it! Heck now that Autodesk rules the world by the time I'd saved up that much money it'll probably cost $15K, so I'll check out Maya, $12K, so I'll check out XSI $10K...and my copy of Zbrush will require $5K to update after they get around to buying that too!
(guess i should learn blender!) - jggube, on 03/05/2009, -1/+2Useful set of tutorials. 3D animation is something I've always wanted to experiment with, this post will come in handy.
- ashras99, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1check this - http://www.cgarena.com/freestuff/tutorials/tutoria ...
- Philosomatika, on 03/05/2009, -0/+1You beat me to it. Long time member it is an awesome site
- infinitus64, on 03/06/2009, -0/+1Thx for saying that so i didn't have to.
- milkmit, on 03/05/2009, -2/+3I haven't touched MAX since R7. Moving to a Mac, I miss it like crazy.
- kevinsboy, on 03/05/2009, -1/+2Alias = last time i checked is still called "Alias" even if its owned by a different company
Catia = is an ancient CAD software but it has many advantages over 3ds max
Maxwell Render = Works inside as well as a stand alone to provide higher quality renderings than 3ds max - inactive, on 03/05/2009, -0/+1are you using a legit copy?
I don't have that problem. - unfinite, on 03/07/2009, -0/+1The chances of getting a job will be much higher if you choose either Max or Maya over any of the other software packages. I'm just pulling a number out of my ass here, but like 90% of the work out there is done in either one or the other. Then you've got XSI in about 3rd and then the rest. I'm not saying that any package is better than another, just what is being used in the industry.
There are lots of smaller packages that are really good at what they do. The problem is that your chances of getting hired go way down. If you you apply for a job and they have to choose between either you or another equally skilled person, they're not going to choose you, who models in Modo, over the other guy that models in Max, which they happen to be using. And chances are they ARE using.
Also, a lot of people think that Max is used for games, and Maya is used for film and TV. That isn't the case at all. Both industries use both packages and there's no better package for either task. They both do things differently and both have their strengths and weaknesses.
Just pick either Max or Maya. Stay away from the small/free packages. Like I said, some might be better but they aren't as popular. And popularity and you chances or getting a job are very closely related. Unless you're REALLY good. Then it doesn't matter so much which package you choose, they'll train you on whatever they're using. Or if they're a big studio, they might let you use your package if what you do can be worked into the pipeline easily (like modeling). - Vivifyer, on 03/05/2009, -2/+3some of thoes are alright. Most of thoes are dated and almost pointless.. like who the hell dosnt use particle flow, or fumefx.. superspray is old and looks lame.
- inactive, on 03/05/2009, -0/+1Autodesk owns 3ds Max and bought out Allias.
Maxwell Render is a fantastic rendering engine but it is just that, a render engine. You can not model any thing in it. - zbeast, on 03/05/2009, -0/+1hehe you beat me to it ...
