- xythian, on 01/09/2009, -2/+30Typography is such a fundamental (and yet overlooked) part of a web design. The types of font you use drastically changes the mood of your design, so I urge all you designers out there to pay special attention to how you use fonts.
- hmjones, on 01/09/2009, -2/+20I can't get enough examples of web typography. It's so important to creating a great design.
- inactive, on 01/09/2009, -7/+16I like Comic Sans MS!
- EvilJelloMan, on 01/09/2009, -4/+12I must not be the artistic type, because I found that entire list to be pretty underwhelming. I saw nothing on those screenshots that made me think "wow, that's great design!". I guess I'm not enough of a typography snob to see much of a difference.
- gametavern, on 01/09/2009, -1/+7Correction: "20 Websites that use LARGE FONTS".
- inactive, on 01/09/2009, -0/+6There is something about the line spacing that really improves readability at A List Apart.
- winry, on 01/09/2009, -2/+7wow, #2, and #5 look awesome
if you've ever tried to make a dark design from scratch you know how difficult is to make them look nice and vivid, great selection of typography and colors - centran, on 01/10/2009, -0/+4Unfortunately, you are limited to the types of fonts you can use. The user has to have the font but that is still no excuse to settle for the default.
- ngmcs8203, on 01/09/2009, -0/+4I wish it was larger than the Manhattan area. I'm always looking for a good place to read the paper.
- drgmdp, on 01/09/2009, -0/+4am i the only one to find this site damn fugly? http://meaganfisher.com/
- JesseJ, on 01/10/2009, -0/+4Yes, nice AMERICAN look. But one wouldn't use any of those in Europe or in Scandinavia, except perhaps on a site that import American goods like beef jerky or something.
Also, It would have been great if the typefaces used in the designs would have been mentioned in the article. As it is now, it is like having pictures of the 10 most beautiful models and not mention their names. - cyclopssmiley, on 01/10/2009, -0/+4I personally like http://astheria.com a lot.
No it is not my site. - skinjester, on 01/10/2009, -0/+4let's not confuse typefaces with typography, ok?
- JonnyCasino, on 01/09/2009, -3/+7Typography arouses emotions, a key element in presentation.
- fandyllic, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3Not impressed. I guess people are so used to going to crappy websites designed by horrible cookie-cutter sources that they are easily impressed by what should be considered slightly above average.
If OS and browser makers would agree on a better standard set of glyph rendering, things would be even better.
Sigh - jaygeeze, on 01/09/2009, -2/+5I wholeheartedly agree. Typography is such a powerful aspect of a web design, yet it's funny how it's one of the most overlooked. Jason Santa Maria, I think, is the most masterful designer in this respect. He's designed his site, A List Apart, and Happy Cog; all designs have very powerful, very unique, and very functional typography design.
- ousthouse, on 01/09/2009, -1/+4they all look the same...
- TrellSaracen, on 01/10/2009, -0/+3That's because they actually are. Serif fonts are easier to read in print; sans-serif are easier on screen. It's a psychological thing.
- Smitty1179, on 01/09/2009, -7/+10Damn this is hot. This is a GREAT list. I especially love me some Jason Santa Maria.
- nourayehia, on 01/09/2009, -3/+6These are absolutely beautiful Typography! I love the FOWA design because it shows how slight grunge effect can be used subtly to give a design that incredible look.
- theGoodness, on 01/10/2009, -0/+3YES WE NEED MORE COMIC SANS!!!!!!!
- hallihg, on 01/09/2009, -4/+7That Elysium Burns page is incredible.
- IllBeBack, on 01/09/2009, -2/+5Yes, because we all know that coding can be accomplished by a "monkey" and requires no talent worth anything.
If you believe that software design requires no "vision", you are wrong.
So, thanks for demeaning programmers everywhere. - inactive, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3Thank you, I almost forgot!
- drakesnook, on 01/10/2009, -0/+3Most of these designs have already been discussed, but they're all excellent. Hell I've seen most of them on Typesites already. The Black Estate website is absolutely gorgeous though, unique without being unusable.
- jlungu, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2Diaroogle.com helps you find quality public toilets from your mobile phone --- priceless.
- dtfinch, on 01/09/2009, -1/+3I'm pretty happy with:
body,td,th { font-family: arial, sans-serif; }
#10 looks horrible. Who writes paragraphs in all-caps? - 0tis, on 01/09/2009, -1/+3That's not what he said - he said a 'code monkey' would be someone to put your vision into practice. That means someone who has the technical skills to create your vision. Designing something and building it are different things. Some people do both, some specialise in one or the other.
Think of it this way: you have an artist, with an idea, or 'vision'; and this artist needs a craftsman in order to make it happen. If you're insulted by the word 'monkey', that's fine, but I don't believe he meant it that way. - 0tis, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2(I read "extremely talented monkeys")
- CrushThemTorg, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2I seem to remember the rule of thumb being leading = font size * 1.24
- Whackly, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2do
dugg for diaroogle.com - tgc1, on 01/09/2009, -1/+3Some of those were pretty good. The rest were delivered via fail boat.
- mythicflux, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2Which aren't supported by some browsers, requiring hacks to get them to work.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/294714 - SilentBobSC, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2I'm glad at least they point to using SIFR. So many wanna-bes just think they can put the font name in their CSS or tag and it will magically render on the client's machine, completely unaware that there are only ~6-8 'safe' fonts. Or they just toss them in images, then forget to alt tag them.
- ileftfark, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2All your comments suck.
- HolyMan28, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2#10 sucks.
But that's just my opinion. - Typhoon2009, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2Yeah, I wasn't trying to demean programmers but I might make an effort to do so from now on since you decided to be such a defensive tool. 0tis' interpretation would be correct - I was representing coders as the craftsmen while the artists are the designers. The artists give the coders the designs, and the coders make it happen. Without good coders we wouldn't have functional websites, and without good designers our websites would look like *****. Happy nancy boy?
- mardraum, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2I thought that said 20 Websites with Beautiful Topology... I need to stop taking ***** math classes.
- 0tis, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2They're nice websites. Do we need another pointless list article?
- jordanmoore, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2Dugg for ALA :)
- skatoolaki, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2Thanks so much for this; one can *never* have too many fonts!!
- TrellSaracen, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2Transparent PNGs are also entirely useless for article headings.
- willhaynes, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2Am I alone in noticing that most of these sites listed not only have killer typography, but also awesome of retro vibes?
great list - JesseJ, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2I'm a graphic designer (who does over 50% web work) and I have really awesome coders I work with, I would NEVER call them "monkeys", they are extremely talented guys and smart, resourceful experts in their area.
- Brassbud, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2Drudge FTW!
If it doesn't work the internet must be broken. - misterparry, on 01/12/2009, -0/+1sitting in typography class, this helps
- skinjester, on 01/10/2009, -0/+1uh... not sure why you feel a need to be impressed. Typography is fundamentally visual hierarchy.
- weatherbird, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Really loved this link...especially cuz I just watched a documentary on PBS called "Helvetica" and -- to my surprise -- it was pretty darned interesting. Thanks for the link!
- Wumbus, on 01/10/2009, -1/+2I would actually disagree... a lot.
- tempusrob, on 01/10/2009, -1/+2@mythicflux: If you're a web designer/developer and don't have a simple base "framework" for websites that includes stuff like PNG fixes (google TwinHelix PNG Fix) and common CSS hacks, you're doing it so very wrong.
I will not defend, for one second, the horrid compatibility of browsers like IE5 and IE6 ... but come on. Their incompatibilities are largely solved problems. Deal with it. -
