- BoneheadFarker, on 12/07/2007, -1/+29Sorry, but the Aztek failed because it was butt-ugly...
- protium, on 12/07/2007, -0/+12I here it'll come with a copy of Duke Nukem Forever
- wiggles, on 12/07/2007, -2/+13Because if you take too big of a step stylistically, the public won' t buy it. The car will be 'ahead of its time' and be a financial failure. Some examples of this include the Pontiac Aztek, the Honda Insight, the Volkswagen Sirocco, the '34-'37 Chrysler Airflow, the Delorean, the Chrysler Crossfire, the list goes on.
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -5/+14Just curious, by why wait until 2018? Will it actually take 10 years to "make" that car?
- herkalees, on 12/07/2007, -0/+8Dunno, it looks more like a 2017 model to me.
- Brian48216, on 12/07/2007, -2/+9Looks like the mustang drivers got jealous and dugg down every compliment.
- mal1964, on 12/07/2007, -0/+52018 why in the hell didn't anyone wake me up?
- wiggles, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5Which is what people say when a car's styling is ahead of its time.
I agree with you, though. It wasn't just awful. It was god awful. But the style lives on -- put the Cadillac CTS next to an Aztek, and look for the similar lines and cues. - bradleyland, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4To say a car's styling was ahead of its time is to say that at some point, we will look back on it and consider it to be attractive. I cannot foresee this for the Aztek.
- wiggles, on 12/07/2007, -1/+5The whole reason the RX-7 never sold well was because people didn't trust the engine design. If the technology isn't well known and proven, people won't buy it. Delorean had that problem too with his mid-engine design. The last time the American public saw that in a mass market car was the Corvair, and that was a colossal flop (thank you Ralph Nader).
You can say the car runs on magic fairy dust, or the car runs on a hybrid motor system with regenerative braking, and it will sound the same to the general public, who when given a choice between a technology that has a long proven track record and something that would give better gas mileage but doesn't have enough information to prove its reliability, will usually chose the former. This is also why the Prius was such a huge risk for Toyota, albeit one that has paid off very well. - inactive, on 12/07/2007, -2/+6Is that why it looks like car manufacturers are dragging their feet when it comes to finding alternative fuels and/or improving existing gas mileage- they're afraid the public won't buy a car that get 50 miles to the gallon or run on water?
- fotbr, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3not a prototype, a clay model.
- turrican, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3Sorry, but I prefer my cars NOT look like athletic shoes.
Come to think of it, I wish most athletic shoes didn't look like athletic shoes. - BoneheadFarker, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3The Mazda3 (which replaced the 323) was always a small car. And I'm not sure if it comes as a 4 door. And honestly, I don't mind the look of the 2018 Mazda3. It's a lot better then some of the cars out there now (Scion, I'm looking at you...).
- randersontt, on 12/07/2007, -1/+4Because it takes 10 years for a concept car to go through the official "uglification" process.
- fotbr, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3that looks nothing like an elise
- dibby1, on 12/07/2007, -3/+6.......but there's no back seat
- kiiwii, on 12/07/2007, -5/+7Whoa.
That thing blows my 2005 Mazda3 out of the water. - cbuddha42, on 12/07/2007, -2/+4This thing is ugly too :(. Not ahead of it's time, just ugly. Looks to be really small too. Mazda already have the miata; not sure why they would want to make the 3 that small. Doesn't there have to be a sedan version too? Good luck fitting usable back doors on that thing.
- commitone, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2Not bad for a 21 yr old car designer chick...
http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseacti ... - inactive, on 12/07/2007, -1/+3Have you guys ever seen the pictures of this kind of stuff 50, 20, even 10 years ago? Remember how funny it was when, this year, we looked at the 'concept cars' of 2005 designed in 1995? Imagine how funny it's going to be when it's 2020 and we're looking at these pictures going "Pffft, we were so silly back then". Amusing.
- LoganT, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Just wanted to tell you guys there is an appropriate section for this and that is the Autos section in Lifestyle. Doesn't seem to be getting much use.
- Dezelon, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1haha, so true buddy!
- Error601, on 12/07/2007, -6/+7They made a new tennis shoe.
- subterfuge, on 12/07/2007, -2/+3"After shaping and molding the clay on the LA show floor for over 10 days, the 2018 Mazda3 was finally displayed."
It took them 10 days to create prototype, and it'll take them 10 years to make the real car? - jparkinson, on 12/08/2007, -1/+2Personally I think that is one of the ugliest cars I've ever seen
- thomashauk, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Wonder if they will put the Wankel engine in.
- noots, on 12/07/2007, -1/+2lots of people would buy that car today if it was a reasonable price. I guarantee you by 2018 that car will look really old.
your'e not seeing the future, your seeing a futuristic car. meaning it's not based on current trends but it also has no way of being based on future trends either. - inactive, on 12/07/2007, -1/+2It may look futuristic today, but in 10 years from now this car will look like a soup can.
- bwa236, on 12/07/2007, -1/+2I'm glad to know there are other digg commenters who actually know what they're talking about, and bringing up good points and rebuttals. I tire of the "look at the girls boob when she plays a Wii" *****, and some unoriginal comment to follow, and some stupid argument going back and forth over what amounts to "you're stupid, pwned, no you're stupid." This is a nice break in the routine.
That said, though it's attractive to me in terms of gas milage, price range, and room (I drive a sport coupe), I think that the Prius would do significantly better if they redesigned the look of that car. Here in the DC metro area I think the Prius has to be near the top of the most common car, and I just think it's horrible looking. Aestetics are on par with how much money a car will save me (well, those two and performance). That's just me - nine9six, on 12/07/2007, -0/+0ya 2018...it's called a "concept", and in reality this "contest" is more about publicity then actually deciding on a design for 10 years down the road. Exemplifying this even more, is the fact that the guy that penned the car (Jacques Flynn) from Mallory McMorrow's "verbal" hypothesis doesn't get a lick of acknowledgment outside of his signature on the sketches...(*core77*com/blog/object_culture/mazdas_facebook_contest_winner_8075.asp)
- cancanakan, on 12/08/2007, -0/+0Actually they already did it but preparing the rest of the world for this futuristic things can take 10 years or more...
- LightSpeed4, on 12/08/2007, -0/+0the whole point was to inspire people to design a car from the future, so they wouldnt design it with current car designs in mind.
- gimlik, on 12/07/2007, -2/+1Really... 2018... really? Neat?
- mos6507, on 12/07/2007, -2/+1Yet another realistic concept with oversized wheels that provide about 1/100th of an inch clearance between the tire and the wheel well. I'm sure people will love going over speed bumps with that.
- canshinedotcom, on 12/07/2007, -1/+0Looks cool, but it doesn't even fly??!!
www canshine com - YamiJim, on 12/07/2007, -5/+4i <3 Mazda, but that is ugly as sin.
on a side note, "WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF TOMMMMOOOORRROOOW!" - magic6435, on 12/07/2007, -5/+3U G L Y you aint got no alibi, that car is ugly yo!
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -3/+1Good to see women auto designers getting some exposure. awesome design, has the mazda look, she should be very proud of herself.
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -7/+4It looks nice but i don't know who will wait for it 10 years. But it looks a little bit like Honda Civic Type R.
- magic6435, on 12/07/2007, -5/+2And this things not?
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -7/+3awesome! :D this model is surely better of the one my mom owns XD I'd love to have such a futuristic design car of my own. 2018, huh? That's a long wait, but worth it, I think :)
- ooMissioNoo, on 12/07/2007, -8/+3It looks exactly like a *U* 2007 */U* lotus elise.
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -8/+1Beautiful car!It's front ppart looks a lot like a peugeot 306...
