- BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -8/+46Torque converter = AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Right there, Toyota has eliminated virtually 2/3rds of the market for this kind of car. Either go with a manual transmission, a SMG-type system, or a DSG (dual clutch) system with paddles.
I don't care if it has 8 gears or 28 gears, if it uses a torque converter it's nothing but a slushbox.
And let's not get into the looks of the thing...grotesque! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+484 door automatic competing with the m3?
- dustyshadow, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36"Impalas have good fuel economy (at least a few years ago). A V-6 Impala gets 21 city and 21 highway, which isn't shabby for a sizable V-6; it could be better but it's good."
My Honda Accord V-6 gets 24 mpg city, 30 mpg highway and it has about 10 more hp than the Impala. Impala's aren't that good.
"..there goes Toyota's fuel economy ratings...."
Please explain to me when Lexus was ever considered an "economy" line of Toyota's. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25It looks rather generic to me.
- dustyshadow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19RS4s and M3s are 60k+ so expect this to be in that range.
- MajorD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20C'mon. The M3 is the M3 and the Audi is the Audi because they are bad ass mofo's to drive. It remains to be seen whether Toyota can produce a raw german-car-fighting machine. Sure they had the Supra - and the "Supercar" they are working on might be in the league of Lambo's and Ferrari's. I just don't see the Lexus pulling off a win.
- BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Only negative class people need to get class from the kind of cars they drive.
-evo driver - Gerolsteiner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Where are the cheap purple-light ground effects?
- snowbooch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14eh, i kinda like the styling of the regular is350 better, looks like a bad aftermarket body kit and lacks the refinement of the bmw M and audi S/RS
rs4 please - alexvalentine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Sorry, that thing is not even close to being in the same class as a BMW M series.
- lemenhir, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21FUGLY. Toyota/Lexus needs to talk to Nissan/Infiniti's designers.
- colklink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13God, those are the worst looking exhaust tips I think I've ever seen...
- mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14How did they steal the M3 badge? It looks nothing like it... *scratches head*
- Pic0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12The car looks riced :(
- xfTwitch, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16That is a HUGELY ugly car. (Not that the new bmw's are anything to right home about) It looks like they tried to copy the mazda RX-8 and the Infinity G35... and failed. Miserably.
- buckynekkid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11It looks too bulky. The Altezza/older IS looked a lot more nimble. This looks like a full-sized sedan. But then again I think the last model Integras look better than Acura RS-X's, so what do I know.
- s0lace, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11How is some ugly sedan supposed to compete with one of the best sport coupes ever?
- michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9thats exactly what I thought.
The design does not match the tech specs. - mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It looks like a ricer. I drove an IS350, and that thing was *quick*, and I've got to say I would take a 350 over this. I personally like the sleeper cars - cars that look like an average sedan but pack a ton of power. This looks like some twenty-something got ahold of it and slapped on some rims and a cheap body kit.
- Xorsist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Not that i dont like this website, the pictures are really good.
But am i the only one thats noticed 3 front pages today? - Backlash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Looks very similar to the mazda 6
- brufleth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@RegisteredUser and similar comments
I would completely agree with you except for one thing. Mercedes.
I've driven a couple BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes cars. There was a large difference between BMW and the other two. The BMWs were just begging to be driven hard, corner like a mad man, and while comparably equipped seemed more focused on driving than pure luxury.
My experience with Lexus and Mercedes has been that they produce family/old person/luxury cars which might be able to perform but really aren't targeted towards the kind of people that will do anything besides drive them to the super market. I'm not knocking that. Most people, especially those who are buying luxury cars, aren't going to go out searching for country roads or take their car to the track. Take a peak inside some of those Lexus and Mercedes cars sometimes. Most of them are automatics and most of their drivers will lag behind you at a stop light even if you're driving a 1988 Caprice station wagon.
I don't see Lexus as targeting the BMW driver who actually likes to drive but rather as cutting into the market of people thinking about buying a Mercedes but hearing that a comparably priced Lexus has "better numbers" being associated with it. Frankly I think most Mercedes buyers would rather have that propeller symbol on their hood than an L. - joaob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@dustyshadow
Just for the record....S4's are in the M3 price range. RS4's are in the high 70's low 80's range. Big difference between the S4 and the RS4 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Kinda ironic that Toyota has the best sales, the best engineers, and the world's most average designers.
They haven't made anything look sexy since the Supra. Kinda like Acura..they've been ***** dead since the NSX and that was back in 91. - smpdigital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Lexus are great cars BUT the car is ugly, looks like a Taurus with a cheap aero kit and some very random wheels, if they really want to fight the M3, they'll need to do better than that and with a coupe with some character. PS the quad exhaust arrangement is way too tacky.
- nodnarb24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's because the North American International Auto Show is going on, prepare for lots of car news.
- pipsi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5show me any sports car that has not drilled rotors. It seves the purpose of fast heat dissipation. The lost surface problem you simply eliminate with bgger diameter.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Did they mention a price range?
- lilrabbit129, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Can someone explain to me how a 0.60 in 4.9 sec car compete with the M3's 0-60 in 4.8 sec?" A tenth of a second isn't very much. To be an m3 fighter doesn't necessarily mean it has to beat it. You want an explanation how this thing can compete with an m3? How about .1 seconds slower, and lets say $10k less.
That'd make it real attractive. - doktorrocket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm thinking an "automotive" category is warranted.
- icexe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5sigh, someone ought to tell the Lexus engineers that "Rice" is no longer considered cool.
- EarthernJar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6They say the same thing every couple of years: they also touted the '01 is300 as a BMW "killer" several years back. The fact that they're always comparing their cars to BMW's just further legitimizes BMW's position as the pinnacle of performance. Besides, by the time it gets released, the new M3 with its v-8 will be available and WALK this grotesque thing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think I know where the original Neon designers ended up. And I don't like the results.
- sillypickle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Fortunately, "honoring true inventive abilities" doesn't actually mean spending money on it. I like fancy engineering as much as(probably more than) the next guy, but I buy what I can afford. Even an old BMW will cost you a pretty penny, and for the same price you could get a nearly-equivalent Japanese car with less miles, less maintenance required, and the ability to go 100,000+ more miles than the BMW before it ceases to be worth fixing. Engineering tricks are cool, and I'm definitely a fan of cool stuff, but I can't afford to actually own any of it. Neither can most people, which is why cheap and reliable cars outsell much faster, tricker automobiles. Fortunately, every new IS is basically a cheaper, newer version of the last 3-series.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Looks kinda silly.
- TKmac02, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3M3's look muscular and strong, but this car just looks weak. I wouldn't be impressed if I saw it in my rear view mirror the way I'm impressed when I see an M3 in my rearview mirror.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3fugly exhaust, ugh.
- Ltgeo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This is why is sucks to live in Australia, we get raped so hard by import taxes when it comes to cars. For example an BMW M3 Coupe which is around $60k USD (approx. $72k AUD) costs us around $140k AUD, double the fking price! It's so hard to justify buying luxury cars when you know that the cars prob only worth half what your paying and the rest is going to taxes etc.
- Infinitas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Japan's BMW M3 Fighter?
*****!
The Mitsubishi Evolution and Subaru's STi have been slapping the m3 around for ages now. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3BTW: The most common mistake poeple make when comparing cars like this to a BMW is the "on paper" discussion. Once one understands the way BMWs are percieved and executed, one will want no other. That is why BMW wins hands down -> throughout every step of the way, they deliver.
- ubertroll, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That lexus looks like a cheap rice rocket. I'd rather have the BMW.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Erm, that's only in the US. Noone in Europe takes Lexus seriously.
- brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6yaknow its ironic there are only two cars that make it to the frontpage of digg...
Gas-guzzling power V8's and Hybrid/Electrics. - cbergeron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Lexus is Toyota's US luxury car. LEXUS stands for: " Luxury EXport US "
It's Toyota's luxury line (same thing as Honda's "Acura" line). This car looks like a "BMW Wannabe", but it's not as pathetic as the Kia "Jaguar Wannabe" (whatever that POS is). - gojcaj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Unless this is substantially cheaper than the M3 or RS4 I'll take the next V8 M3 any day.
- Hercules, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you can't get it in a manual, it's not a sports car. I don't care about SMG... all four limbs working, that's a real man's car :)
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Keeps you in the torque band. That means more fast. Think shorter gears, not more top end.
- sgr215, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's still a Lexus. Call me weird but I don't think Lexus could ever compete with the M3. At least I couldn't ever see myself getting a Lexus rather than a M3.
- jthoward007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That is the first thing that caught my eyes as well. I'm all for quad exhaust tips, but damn, those diagonally stacked tips just look horrendous! I never even saw the rest of the car...just...kept...staring....at....exhaust...couldn't...look....away
- mrlost117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3digg me down, but you guys are retards and have no taste in cars, this car is sex through and through.
