- Ryosen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31Question #19. Can our server survive the Digg effect?
http://duggmirror.com/design/18_Questions_Your_CEO_Forgot_to_Ask_When_Building_Your_Website - Madh2orat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"2. Who should we host with that will be reliable?"
Aparently not the current webhost. - ileadyouth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"There’s nearly nothing worst than doing a great job marketing - seeing the website get hammered with traffic, and feeling your stomach sink as you realize you blew it with crappy hosting."
- Broadway, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Jesus Christ, we don't need to fellate the story in the comments without adding any substantive discussion. That's what the "digg it" button is for.
(This applies to all of these buried comments) - trialofmiles, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5It's obvious that a group of people got together to digg this article, and talk it up in the comments. The first several comments are all generic compliments of the link.
And now that I think about it, you're probably one of them. - xtr3m, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What's up with the first 7 comments?
Good job for modding them down. - inactive, on 09/24/2008, -1/+3I somehow KNEW I'd be eating those words:)
- drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5So rather then expecting your boss to ask you about these things, why don't you tell him/her? Obviously if they are CEO they more then likely don't know anything about the web. So why are you expecting them to ask? Be the proactive and do your job! Plus you will get brownie points.
Honestly this article is kind of misguided in that it gives people a bunch of noob tips if they don't know what they are doing, but if you were hired not knowing this stuff then your boss got ripped off. What I don't understand is whether this article is for the CEO or you... In the case of the CEO they don't need to know since its no their job, if its you then you should already know it. Maybe this article needs to be renamed "18 tips for beginners before you get that killer job" - gengisPhat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4FTA
2. Who should we host with that will be reliable?
There’s nearly nothing worst than doing a great job marketing - seeing the website get hammered with traffic, and feeling your stomach sink as you realize you blew it with crappy hosting. Don’t skimp out on hosting if your planning something big. At minimum - plan to scale and learn how to implement proper caching when necessary.
Guess they didn't follow their own advice. - himawari, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3As a web developer for a few years, I agree those are valid questions and will help to build a successful website. The author, however, has to realize that most of the time the management team or any other stakeholders have relatively little technical details. These people might not know the web enough to ask sophisticated questions as suggested.
Many of the items mentioned above are actually implementation details which should fall under the regime of the web developers. If your management team trusts your professional advices, from my experience, it would go with your hosting / implementation (ie: css layout, pretty url, etc) recommendations. The managements usually only care about: budgets, time to completion, number of staff and result. More often than not they wouldn't care about whether you use table or css-based layout, how you name the files, etc.
That said, as a responsible web developer, you should be the one who takes initiatives as for giving the management team advices as needed. True, they might not always listen; a lot of time, however if you can back up your claims with solid reasoning and cost-benefit analysis, they would be more than happy to adopt your ideas. (of course, you should always be reasonable with your budget and completion time.
In short, these are the questions a web developer should know well and prepare to help the management team to build a successful website. - WhackingDay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow.. if the CEO forgot to ask all 18 of those questions, um.. is there even a business in existance?
I guess some execs expect the "IT Guy" and/or the "Marketing Guy" to figure it all out, eh? - aeoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1CEO will have brownie points if they ask those questions. Why would anyone who is not a CEO need brownie points? Which position involves the most butt licking? (this is literally where the term "brown" comes from). The higher up you are the more political it gets, hence, more butt licking.
Besides, if the CEO has no appreciation for such things, even if people suggest it, how would the CEO know to heed that advice? How would the CEO know not to fire insolent idiots who dare suggest something? Where do you draw the line? - sophiaperennis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1CEOs actually ask questions about their corporate website? I thought they only knew how to collect their big fat annual bonus check at the end of the year. Oh yeah, and get a salary increase while the rest of the company have to take a salary cut.
- DTownBrent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Eh, I liked it - and enjoyed your interview on rockstars awhile back. Sad to see that every story that makes it to front page is filled with negative comments.
- harsh1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ouch. Cache + host the CSS and images on another server handles well enough on good shared hosting.
- ineedacigarette, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2jesus. this article has some good points, but it's nearly impossible to take it seriously with all the grammar/spelling errors.
- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -2/+3>seeing the website get hammered with traffic, and feeling your stomach sink as you realize you blew it
Damn it...guilty as charged - undersestimated the volume of digg.
It held up for a while...time to shell out for that VPS I guess. damn. - web-professor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good stuff Stuntdubl I enjoyed it.
- aeoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is another lesson for you. Even with the best planning and execution, the unexpected will happen -- guaranteed. So, instead of relying on being a "good boy" you should learn to accept life as it comes, including mistakes and all. And once you learn to accept it, you can try to be a somewhat of a "good boy" without blowing all the veins in your head.
Don't stake yourself on being 100% right or on being 100% anything, or even 90%. - inactive, on 09/24/2008, -1/+2>Ouch. Cache + host the CSS and images on another server handles well enough on good shared hosting.
Yeah...did the cache part and had requests down to under 30k - and were runnin' along good...host is saying it's a DOS or something from elsewhere....hmmmm.
Worst part is I planned for digg traffic and it STILL blew me up. damn. - inactive, on 09/24/2008, -1/+2Back up and running..phew...despite a little hiccup...another vote for pair hosting - excellent service and my bad for not letting them know sooner to expect the influx.
- badulescub, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Awsome collection of resources !
- jcs_goog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Excellent article. This article has more practical advice than a 2 year MBA program.
- BenWilks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ah the lovely world of SEO. Spelling? Who gives a *****. That can always be fixed... Website rankings and traffic can not!!!
Nice one Todd, shame about the Digg taking down the server. I'd love to see the ass wipes commenting here rank a site let alone properly understand half the points you made. Disappointing.
Digg winers crack me up - moan, moan, moan. Get a life wankers, you all sound so cynical. Funny how you all think you own Digg or something. Surely you can't have your heads that far up you asses? Or maybe not... - missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I would be more willing to read and accept if if the guy knew how to type and the difference between "your" and "you're".
- wopbobaloobop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Grammatically retarded title.
- NapoleonGold, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Why all the Digg Downs?
I am a total noob and this is a great starting resource for my n00b ass, thanks for the reference point and
+DUGG - mythandros, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3I would be more willing to read and accept what was written if it didn't have buzzwords (like "leveraging").
I think he needs to heed his own advice about credibility. - Slagged, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1An obvious plug but overall good advice.
Dugg. - KMehthas, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1mod me down, my post is useless as ryosen edited his comment to include duggmirror (psst you're welcome for the idea)
- ShooterMcGavin, on 10/12/2007, -21/+3This is amazing... just what I've been looking for. I have an idea I want to bring to market and this is JUST the very data I needed.
