Digital did alot to change photography, to the point where the old masters have nothing to say to the new photographers.
the photography process, from start to stop is completely different. and i cant agree with this website. They have nice photos but are in no way masters. Masters take years of dedication and will probably die before they even get the label of master.

Ansel Adams is a master, but few know his teacher Alfred Stiegliz who pushed to make photography accepted as a tool, field, and something more than a hobby. Alberto Korda got lucky with his shot of Che, and I honestly think Che is overrated and his popculture status is definitely not what he wanted.

Jesh de Rox!? So weak. How about Diego Uchitel, Alistair Taylor-Young, Phil Poynter, or hell, even Dusan Reljin? While a lot of fashion photography is *****, these blokes are making quality work. And they all happen to be great to work for as well, especially Diego.
Buried for a weak aesthetic that mistakes cheesy graphic design for good photography, and for lack of knowledge about the photography industry. - cathpah, on 11/14/2008, -1/+5i don't think anything is *wrong* with Annie Leibowitz, but given the talent of so many other contemporary photographers, it gets a little tiring seeing Annie Leibowitz as such a household name because of some nice, yet DAMN simple, portraits of celebrities.
For many people, they can only name 2 photographers: Ansel Adams, who we're still learning from, and Annie Leibowitz...who is FAR from the 2nd greatest photographer out there. - kangy3213, on 11/14/2008, -0/+4your going to have to be president bitch

Hell Pouya is 25 and Joey Lawrence is 19. They both have amazing talent and are emerging photographers but far from "master." I'm actually insulted for Pouya to be listed on the same page the one trick pony, David Hill.

So instead of being so cynical, how about all of you show some appreciation of the work by these photographers? I wish I could be at least half as good as any of them, really. These people have talent, admit it, whether they are or are not the masters.

She's highly overrated (as is often the case with celebrity artists - her work is less impressive and important than her name) when compared to so many other talented photographers out there. If you've got any small art gallery's where you live, chances are you'll find some unknown/little known photographers with significantly more talent and vision than Leibowitz! As a matter of fact, you could probably find a significant number or photographers on flickr and photo.net and photosig.com that are more talented. But then again, art is subjective (mostly!).

I'm guessing you are, but if not check out the link, they do alot of amazing work. - nickbrewer, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1i don't understand it. just so everyone knows. i don't feel like I deserve to be on a list like this. i am still very new to photography, barely even call myself a photographer and in no way consider myself a master. i luck out with most of my shots. they make me look like i know what i'm doing! ha! there are many people out there that should have made this list WAY before me! it's good to know there are people that dig my stuff though. thanks.

WAY too much HDR effect to be anywhere near realistic
Master photographers are the ones who can create stunning pictures without photoshop.
I have a lot more respect for the ones who can do amazing editing in the darkroom than the ones who use photoshop.
Any 9 year old can torrent CS3 and learn how to edit photos well - cathpah, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1no, they aren't only good when they are difficult....but when separating one's self as a "master" it sure helps if you're able to show off skills that only you may have. While creating an image is never easy, so much of what Annie Leibowitz does is photographing beautiful celebrities, and when comparing the difficulties that go into that against truly fantastic studio work or serious travel/street portraiture....the latter certainly proves itself to be more of a challenge. That doesn't mean she's not any good (she definitely IS)....it just shows that many other photographers have to push themselves a lot harder/further to create beautiful images without the advantage of most of them being created around already beautiful people.
And I, as a photographer, DO find liebowitz' portraits simple. Does that mean they aren't good? No. Does that mean she maybe hasn't fully earned her reputation as the number 1 household name in contemporary photography? maybe.
Do you think most people know here because they've seen a great picture and then seen her name in the bottom corner, or is it because her name is often plastered on the front of esquire/rolling stone/etc? Oh, and that miley cyrus bit didn't hurt her celeb status either.....(even though i do think those who faulted her for that are smoking crack...it's art people!)
I'm just saying that there are so many other AMAZING contemporary photographers. It strikes me as odd that she is probably the most famous out of the bunch. - marioara, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1awesome photography
