- dkruta, on 10/13/2007, -1/+27Anyone notice something strange about the first underwater photograph? It may just be my mind playing tricks, but it seems to just be a diagram of how it was taken to begin with...
- pimpbot1979, on 10/13/2007, -11/+35Wow, "the world's first AND oldest photograph." Can you imagine if the first photograph was not the oldest, or if the oldest photograph was not the first? Would your head start to melt down?
Breaking: Researches have just found the newest first photograph ever taken and found it to be indistinguishable from the oldest last photograph. - j0ew00ds, on 10/13/2007, -4/+26Listen Pimpbot. I know this is a stretch, but it is possible that the oldest SURVIVING photograph is NOT the first photograph taken. Think it through.
- gl77, on 03/31/2008, -1/+19"first underwater photograph" looks like a sketch to me.
- PerfektXj, on 10/13/2007, -3/+16Sites pretty laggy, heres a mirror http://m3.bestpicever.com/piles/?s=tenphotofirsts
- Adrianc333, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Yet, the quality of those is still better than the iPhone's.
- corkdorkdan, on 10/13/2007, -1/+14"Because the sun was behind the Earth at the time the photograph was taken, the Earth appears to be fully lit."
I think that would result in the Earth being quite dark since that's, you know, nighttime and all. - Mononuclear, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Haha this has to be a joke? There is no person in the world's first photo of a person. The first underwater is a drawing. The first aerial is pigeons with cameras
- socialmedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Some great pictures. I did not realize that the first picture from space was taken in 1946
- areohbe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9First underwater photograph was a sketch, and first Aerial photograph was a picture of birds with cameras strapped to them... that was probably a first
- thescimitar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The first one (the "oldest photograph") is actually available for viewing at the University of Texas at Austin. The man who made is was Nicephore Niepce. It's pretty wild, you can barely see anything, and the lighting in the room (it's got its own display room) is so dark it takes several minutes for your eyes to adjust before you can figure out what you're looking at.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5there are two people on the street in the photo.
The other two pictures are probably lost, missing, destroyed, or otherwise unavailable. - MaZAKaR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah, I was kind of disappointed with that as well! A behind the scenes DIY from 1856! now where is the actual picture? Maybe it didn't work... so would it really be the first? What about the first aerial photo... attaching a camera to a bird, interesting, but did they get the cameras back?
- revjustin2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm sure it's probably on Fark.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Unfortunately the only copy is on an 8" floppy, and they lost the drive a few years back. :-)
- Serifos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes you are.
- Tenlow, on 10/13/2007, -1/+5I like to think I'm keeping the tradition alive.
- redwards, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, actually. But if you find it, I want to read that article too.
- jesgreen, on 10/13/2007, -0/+3http://www.worldsfamousphotos.com/the-first-color- ...
"Maxwell discovered that color photographs could be formed using red, green, and blue filters. He had the photographer Thomas Sutton photograph a tartan ribbon three times, each time with a different color filter over the lens. The three images were developed and then projected onto a screen with three different projectors, each equipped with the same color filter used to take its image. When brought into focus, the three images formed a full color image." - Cannfodd3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Amazingly you're not far from the truth. I saw an exhibit of early photography (c1800's) at the Met in NY a couple of years ago. Half of the photos were of buildings. The other half were of chicks with their skirts hiked up. Apparently razors weren't too popular back then either.
Nevertheless, it made me smile to think that we (as people) haven't changed much. - bloominoctober, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Where is the world first digital photograph? And where is the first photoshopped photograph?
- OldTypewriter, on 10/13/2007, -1/+3I think that's why it says right below it "Original photograph not available". It's a sketch of how the photo was taken.
- MadOtaku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The first could have been destroyed, but the oldest could be intact. Therefor the oldest doesn't have to be the first. You did, however, make one good point. The first would have to be the oldest, so it is kind of redundant.
- thescimitar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here's a story about the first digital photo: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/240048_firs ...
Couldn't find the actual image though. - YamiJim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i think it's more demonstrating how it was taken, rather then the photo itself.
same with the Ariel photo graph, the pidgins with cameras?
savy? - leoedin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2damn you. One part of me wants to digg you for the informative first comment, and the other part wants me to bury and block you for somehow bringing in stupid conspiracy theories.
In this case, the conspiracy theorist in you just got yourself buried. - MaZAKaR, on 10/13/2007, -1/+3The first photo ever taken was probably not even distinguishable as a picture... considering all the testing, and work to go through to make it work, i don't think the first picture taken was a beautiful picture! Believe me, even when i got my first Digital Rebel XT camera, i didn't enjoy the majority of my first pictures, and the camera was already made for me! :)
- MaZAKaR, on 10/13/2007, -1/+3Wow, that would be quite the experience... I am surprised it has lasted so long... probably because of the dark room :)
- Andres84, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1Wow. the self portrait is over 130 years old... still it looks so good... I would have never thought it was such an old picture
- inactive, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1ROFLMAO!!
- KrayzieKyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is either a long term collection of art or someone has just been reading Digg for the past few months looking for "first picture" in headlines.
- jonohull, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1The description said the camera was lost, but he picture recovered. It also said the pic was not available to them.
- MaZAKaR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just so you know, that is actually the earliest surviving photograph, c. 1826. It required an eight-hour exposure, which resulted in sunlight on both sides of the buildings.
- RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wrong! If I can recall they used Kites,seriously.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Isn't dyslexia fun!
- subliminalurge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And yet "soviet russia" jokes continue to get dug up.....
- inactive, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1Seems pretty accurate.
However the first color photo was really a FLAWED composite of three separate plates projected through RED, GREEN, BLUE filters.
Luckily for Maxwell it was through happy accident that this worked as well as it did as the emulsions he used where actually insensitive to both the red and green portions of the spectrum. On the 100th anniversary of Maxwell's public display, Ralph Evans of Kodak unraveled how such a passable reproduction could be made with such a flawed process.
The entire story of the pursuit color photography is amazing in of itself and contains several examples synchronicity in human endeavors.

- redwards, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1needs more mirror
- gl77, on 03/31/2008, -1/+2savy.
- andy370, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's more of a film negative than an actual photograph.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mirrors, but no images:

- Dylan47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1more of a description for the photos would be nice.
- flowersjustin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And it wasn't even an aerial photograph. It was a photograph of the means with which they made the first aerial photograph.
- scoobyis2cool, on 10/15/2007, -0/+0Pretty awesome stuff, I'm particularly impressed with the first self-portrait - very sharp and well exposed
