All content is user submitted, however the front page is under editorial control.
Wow - Just like digg! - svodka, on 11/17/2008, -1/+38I disagree. Site design isn't always fancy buttons and gradients, it's also usability and layout. Less is more.
- melonhedd, on 11/17/2008, -3/+34What the ***** is mixx?
- Smudded, on 11/17/2008, -1/+26Hm. Someone writing about design that knows nothing about design. FTA:
"The use of gradients is just enough, they don’t overuse them."
Quite the observation... - AmyVernon, on 11/17/2008, -4/+21I agree, for the most part, but you really think Digg is third-best? I mean, don't get me wrong, I spend more time on Digg than any of the other sites. But I'd never thought of it as particularly attractive.
- Wakamex, on 11/17/2008, -5/+21"Error 500 - Internal server error
An internal server error has occured!
Please try again later."
I'm guessing emitgraphics.com isn't on that list - Moisgreat, on 11/17/2008, -2/+17Obviously not a top 10 server
- roostersheep, on 01/16/2009, -1/+14http://emitgraphics.com.nyud.net/2008/11/16/10-top ...
- inactive, on 11/17/2008, -4/+17EmitGraphics.com - Ranked #9000
- Morghin, on 11/17/2008, -3/+13Reddit should score higher in my opinion. Its simplicity is a jewel in itself. More doesn't mean better. Flashy doesn't mean better.
While it's a neat attempt at sparking debate about newssite design this one didn't list any criteria, credentials, or how they go about evaluating it at all. Fail. - DrDash, on 11/17/2008, -2/+11Mixx.com is a great digg like site, minus one thing. The users! If Mixx had more users I think it would be great, as it is.. well .. its not social enough.
- scoot2006, on 11/17/2008, -1/+10I've never heard of the site "Error 500 - Internal server error"... seems like it has a pretty clean design, though!!
- inactive, on 11/17/2008, -1/+8I bid 10 monopoly-dollars
- efitz11, on 11/17/2008, -0/+6its the reason i am always on this site and never on reddit
- troglodytejb, on 11/17/2008, -0/+6Huh. Personally, I would almost exactly flip that list. Reddit and Fark load faster and are more readable than a lot of the others. There's a lot to be said for simplicity, in my opinion. I read Digg-- less regularly than Fark, Reddit, and BoingBoing, but I can't stand how overdesigned it feels.
- DaDiggydiggyDOC, on 11/17/2008, -1/+7Great, the digg effect has claimed yet another victim ....
- Pelikoira, on 11/17/2008, -2/+7Mixx has all of the cool features, but the quality of content is not so good as on digg...
- IKORKYI, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4yes, the comment system is fantastic after they addressed all the issues...erhm...
- nikhil1986, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4Nothing beats simplicity. Most (non-pubescent) people do not want bulky websites. Digg, Reddit are the best that way. Its also the reason why Facebook trumped MySpace. Plain text interface FTW!
- y0y0howsdajell0, on 11/17/2008, -2/+6I'm sorry, I love Reddit, but it's ***** ugly. The only nice quality is the custom alien logo for each subreddit. Example: the Libertarian reddit has pot and guns...that's awesome...
- inactive, on 11/17/2008, -1/+4I'm guessing you're being buried because most people need bright flashing colours and large icons to get them to stop drooling for long enough to pay attention to a website.
- okyourturn, on 11/17/2008, -1/+4i love stumbleupon. that site is sooo addictive.
- annjay, on 11/17/2008, -2/+5Error 500 - Internal server error
- DrDash, on 11/17/2008, -0/+3I think its lacking in users, which keeps the content thin.
- jamesmcm, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2Reddit would be top for me. Just the comment and sub-reddit systems are so intuitive and efficient.
Slashdot is nice too but Reddit is more democratic. - inactive, on 11/17/2008, -1/+3your blend of *****
- Boagrius, on 11/17/2008, -1/+3They didn't miss it, the site just sucks...
- roostersheep, on 01/16/2009, -0/+2Sure buddy, anything to shave off those extra few seconds of your precious time. I'm sorry, I have failed you. Mirror.
- marksands07, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2What?! 9000!!!!!!!
- xstarsprinklesx, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2Compared to the others on the list, it is.
- mintblogger, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2Mixx at 1st position !!!!!
- NathanielJ, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2I agree. I doubt emitgraphics.com made the list.
- NoozeHound, on 11/17/2008, -1/+2Or, put another way - 'Hey please go to Mixx since we can't on Digg any more.'
- Vindexus, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1I was just asking...
- elliam, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1The writer seems to have sneezed and jumbled up his list.
- pinetree, on 11/17/2008, -5/+6Am I the only one that finds it odd that an article about design uses a font that is too small and colors that are too low-contrast to read without squinting?
- VulcanMike, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1"Certain bits of the site don’t look good, some smaller images are pixelly" is about as sophisticated as the design criticism in this link gets. I'd call it a waste of time, but now I know about Design Float and can get some real content there...
- vilago, on 11/17/2008, -4/+5buried for the 1000th website to go down since i've been visiting digg.
- EmitStop, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1I guess you weren't here a few months ago when digg banned like 100 powerusers.
- Ouze, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1With all social media sites offer, it's really difficult to look at their diverse offerings and then quantify and score them. Digg has an excellent layout and appealing design, whereas the comments at Reddit are not largely populated by ***** flinging retards. So they're all a little different.
- redwallhp, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1Their users don't submit to the right categories either.
- PamalaLauren, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1I don't understand some on the list, because they looked horrific in my opinion. I do have to agree that SU is great especially when you have nothing better to do.
- warchant, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1dugg for fark. i forgot how funny their photoshop contests are.
- MikeFromAmerica, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1Web 2.0? Son, I was making websites with curves and gradients back in '97 when you were still in diapers.
- longdongsilver7, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1It was designed by Chris Pearson. It sure loads a lot faster than the others (besides Reddit), which are heaver on graphics and fluff.
- imronburgundy83, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1"It has been claimed as a sort of refuge for the diggers that were banned in the recent mass bannings over at Digg.com." - Explanation of mixx.com
How do you get banned from Digg? - marioara, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1I guess I'm pretty addicted to Stumbleupon. however there is a lot of great stuff on Digg.
- Lanfearz, on 11/17/2008, -1/+2Yeah... No.
Stumbleupon is so ridiculously unintuitive.
This list is so bad - MikeL17, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1IT'S (not) OVER 9000!!!!!
