- sputza, on 02/27/2009, -1/+20This is an excellent list. Great timing for this article; I plan on a redesign soon.
- inactive, on 02/27/2009, -0/+8Not for nothing, but I have no idea why people use the phrase "not for nothing".
- serif69, on 02/27/2009, -7/+15Not for nothing, but if you have to be told to put a logo, tagline, contact info, call to action, about section, services and portfolio on a portfolio site, you really have no business putting up a portfolio site in the first place. Buried for being too obvious.
- seantubridy, on 02/27/2009, -1/+7"Use a form to make it easier for users to contact you (so that they don’t have to take down your email address and then open up their email manager)."
It's called an email link. They click it. They don't have to take down anything. - OxyContin, on 02/27/2009, -1/+5Decent advice for the most part, but good god, I do not want to be friends with my clients on Facebook!
- seantubridy, on 02/27/2009, -0/+3Hey, if you run a business, you put up with spam for the sake of making things easy for your customers. Noting bugs me more than people who do this "joe (at) joe (dot) com" type of cryptic crap. That just tells people that not getting spam is more important than their business. Weak.
- MrSkills, on 02/27/2009, -1/+4But this isn't just for web designers' portfolios. I'm an audio engineer, so I have no expertise on web design but I still want to make a nice portfolio website.
- serif69, on 02/27/2009, -1/+3I use it to make an argument out of something that isn't being argued. Like a one-sided logical fallacy.
- Meep3D, on 02/27/2009, -1/+3Which only really works if they happen to be running outlook/thunderbird. If they are one of the majority of web users who don't use a pop3/imap client then best case it just won't work, worst case they type out the whole email, click send and then the system quitely blackholes it.
Mailto links are a big, big nono if you actually want people to contact you! - NicoNicoNico, on 02/27/2009, -0/+2It really does help. As long as you keep it professional, you stay in their minds. It's called networking.
I tried applying to a place, but they weren't hiring, so I added the owner to my Twitter account so we both hear from each other. We still talk, and I'm still in her mind so that, when she does need to hire, she'll remember me. - MtheoryX, on 02/27/2009, -0/+2But you still don't have the job, right?
- WiretapStudios, on 02/27/2009, -0/+2Just set up a separate account for networking, don't use your personal account.
- MtheoryX, on 02/27/2009, -1/+3Email links are also a great idea... if you want bots to harvest it and present you with exciting new products from Nigeria.
- mikedaul, on 02/27/2009, -0/+2Why do you think the majority of Web users aren't using an email client?
The point of using a contact form has little to do with making it easier for people to contact you - instead it is about having a layer of filtration between the web and your email address, mitigating spammers, and ease of categorizing inquiries by subject and the like. - EricMiIIer, on 07/10/2009, -1/+2My advice then would be to go out and purchase a good site template (MonsterTemplate.com) or pay someone to build it for you. Nothing does more damage to your image than a horrible site.
- seantubridy, on 02/27/2009, -0/+1I (and many other people) just would rather email from my own email application or account rather than fill in a form. If they were always as simple as "name, email, message" that would be one thing, but many sites try to force too much info out their users. It's annoying.
Why not have a clickable email address and a simple form available on a contact page and let people choose? And you can use an email obfuscation script too.

- MeccaYdna, on 02/27/2009, -0/+1I agree. The problem with using facebook links is you then have to police your pages in the event of some "friend" dropping the F-bomb a half dozen times on your wall. (or whatever) Sure you might look like a nice job candidate, but you might end up getting judged on these uncontrollable things that end up on your pages.
- chchrob, on 02/27/2009, -1/+2Smashing Mag is a good excuse to show off some nice design for inspiration rather than actual useful information I find.
If this info is helpful then chances are you still use Frontpage. - findhostcoupons, on 03/14/2009, -0/+1I would also like to add such steps as header and footer design to this list!
- MeccaYdna, on 02/27/2009, -0/+1hmm, I partially disagree. Not all portfolios consist of "please hire meeee!" messages and such...for instance my "portfolio" (if you call it that) just showcases what I do and some of the activities I've been involved with lately. No need to turn it into a formal public speech-structured document with outlined attention-getters, supportive messages, recaps and conclusions, etc.
Thoughts? - randmcnally, on 02/27/2009, -0/+1I know her, she's not going to hire you.
- MeccaYdna, on 02/27/2009, -0/+1For me it's about contact availability. Some people simply demand an actual way to contact you, not by filling out an automated form and having that sent off to wherever it ends up. It's why I don't use forms on my site...partially because I hate filling them out myself :)
- jsilver123, on 02/27/2009, -0/+1helpful tips
- zenrhe, on 03/09/2009, -0/+1I can see that this can seem inspiring, and usually i love being inspired. I think the quality examples were so good that infact i felt put of because there's no way i can compete. But I am sure this is just a moment of weakness. They are indeed simple steps, but the most important and sometimes over looked. Great article.
- MtheoryX, on 02/27/2009, -0/+1I can certainly understand where you're coming from.
But is there anything an actual email link can do that an email form could not?
I still lets them contact you, but it obfuscates the email address. Additionally, you can route the message within your company based on a selection from a drop down like support, sales, billing, other, etc. - brooklotzkar, on 02/27/2009, -0/+1Holy crap, prefect timing! I was just about to create my own portfolio websites since many colleges/unis need to see it b4 i get accepted. THANKS!
- EricMiIIer, on 07/10/2009, -1/+1I feel motivated to update my site now.
- EricMiIIer, on 07/10/2009, -1/+1I am going to have to side with NicoNicoNico on this one. Business is more about what you know and less about what you do. I'm 26 and successful and I owe it all to networking (and a bit of luck). When you have people twice your age reporting to you it puts a lot of things in perspective.
- CleoQKazoo, on 02/27/2009, -1/+1"Sam Brown offers clear links to other websites he uses, allowing us to stalk him." lol
- RoboticDreams, on 02/27/2009, -1/+1Some good ideas on the examples. But it should be individually. Anyway it is good work
- OxyContin, on 02/27/2009, -0/+0Hey, if it works for you, that's great. I'd personally prefer to separate my work and social life online. I don't want any clients seeing that one guy's "d00d, I totally got laid this weekend!!" status update.
And there's ALWAYS that one guy. - MtheoryX, on 02/27/2009, -1/+1Do some volunteer work for a non profit or a church of some sort. It's a great way to at least get some stuff going.
- jimmysilvs, on 02/27/2009, -3/+3eh. smashingmagazine site showcases are getting a little redundant. always the same few in there.
and obvious steps are obvious. - RobotBuddha, on 02/27/2009, -1/+1Most of the advice seemed solid, except for the layouts. They just seemed pretty generic.
- inactive, on 02/27/2009, -1/+111. make sure you put words on your website so potential employers can read them. This will help them know about you more.
- bilbohicks, on 02/27/2009, -2/+1Nice article. Now all I need is some work to put into a portfolio and I'm good to go!
- AbhinavSood, on 02/27/2009, -2/+1Nice tips and some good portfolios up on the list..
