- ifonly, on 11/04/2008, -1/+3How much did you have to pay to get this on the front page?
- myhandleondigg, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2I suppose it could be, but running a batch process of an action that resizes all the images in a folder would probably be much faster.
- bigtimslim, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1I only need 1
- Uber7Dude, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1What is the point of website thumbnails?

- troyfoley, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1Photoshop running on a web server and generating thumbnails in real-time?! Awesome...
- Ericdigital, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1So could these be used for something like creating thumbnails of images for a online portfolio for example, instead of creating smaller versions in photoshop?
- myhandleondigg, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1This is somewhat useful, but it reminds me too much of the javascript preview popups when you hover over links in some blogs. I haven't hated a web technology that much since the Great Flash Splash Page Revolution a decade ago.
- DigitalBrian, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1WHat is the point? you use one of these and your site looks like crap when they are down, on the other hand it takes you 2 minutes to just take a screen shot and resize it, and you wont have to deal with missing thumbs.
- uncoolcentral, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1Excellent collection/list - of crap I likely won't use on my sites. (I tested snapshots on one site for a while. It bombed to the point of causing traffic to take a dive. Great in theory, terrible in practice.) I've also witnessed poor implementation that similarly sucked the life out of other sites... but maybe I'm missing the point? I guess I've seen generated thumbnails that didn't *detract* from a site - but they rarely add value I notice.
- slanFr, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1website's thumbnails services are very usefull to illustrates threads.
Put one or two pictures about a websites are sometimes more speakable than a long speech about...
Try a service like thumbizy, just enter the url, choose the size and let go... you can save the picture and use the url...
Or if you don't like online services you can use the very usefull FF extension named Fireshot... - mcastilho, on 12/20/2008, -0/+1PageGlimpse.com has a very scalable Web Thumbnails generation service that runs on Amazon Web Services cluster. It currently powers thumbnails of many websites including Adjix a new twitter link shortening service. The API lets you quickly integrate website thumbnails in any of your application, website or mobile app. And it's FREE. The service is really fast and you don't have to worry about capturing thumbnails yourself or keep them up-to-date. http://www.pageglimpse.com

http://www.freewebs.com/ultimatewebhostingcomparis ... - puravida76, on 11/08/2008, -0/+0If you are a web designer and want to show off your portfolio, then you would want to use a thumbnail service. Here's an example:
http://www.imagion.com/web_design.htm
If you are a graphics designer or have other types of images, then myhandleondigg's suggestion is a better way to go. There are lots of free utilities out there that can do this for you. - puravida76, on 11/08/2008, -0/+0Yep... when they are down (which "most" services ARE often down), it looks like crap.
That's why you have to find a provider who allows local caching, warning: shameless plug approaching: shrinktheweb.com allows local caching and has not gone down in 11 months of providing service. ;)
Also, it's not likely you will have screenshots of 1,000 websites you may want to index and to resize in a batch file. Besides, why bother when a single line of code will do all that for you? - puravida76, on 11/08/2008, -0/+0Visitors are 10x more likely to click on a link with an embedded thumbnail (good for those who earn revenue from clicks) and they provide a visual point of reference when talking about other websites (i.e. the point of the web). In short, people are visual in nature and links are never as good as an image.
The real point is in someone's ability to come up with creative uses. Simply showing a thumbnail in a directory is common, but using thumbnails to interactively explore each page of a website, now that's something and that's just one example.
