- ostracize, on 10/27/2008, -0/+29I think the most recent version of GIMP is able to use PS brushes with no added hacks.
- Disillusion, on 10/27/2008, -3/+25Or you could learn how to use GIMP and help make photoshop irrelevant. That might stick it to the man a bit more.
- ventralnet, on 10/27/2008, -0/+20how so? I understand that photoshop is a more intricate tool however i dont see how having it you magically wouldn't need to use these brushes.
- soccerman90, on 10/27/2008, -1/+17it is the best for alot of people who dont want to buy PS or download it illegally. I dont think there is anyone who thinks gimp is better than PS
- madk, on 10/27/2008, -5/+19and all the real graphic designers use Photoshop.
- TaylorHelferty, on 10/27/2008, -2/+15I've met exceptions to your statement. I've met professionals who use GIMP.
- sparkmonkeyz, on 10/27/2008, -0/+13That would be like saying, there is no reason to drive a Honda Civic, when you can drive a Ferrari. Maybe not all of us can afford a Ferrari, and don't feel like going out and stealing one. Sure it may not be the best, but it sure as hell can get you from point A to B.
- hadak, on 10/27/2008, -0/+13Can photoshop use gimp brushes tho?
- Seann7656, on 10/27/2008, -0/+10Who are you yelling at? I don't think anyone claimed it was the best image editor.. For being free though, you can't complain
- directrix13, on 10/27/2008, -0/+6Its very usable. I have no problems at all with it.
- DefaultGen, on 10/27/2008, -6/+12All the aspiring graphic designers I know use GIMP.
- revslaughter, on 10/27/2008, -0/+6You mean either spend $1000 or steal photoshop and you won't need any of these brushes anymore.
I dunno, I think that a free product with a lot of versatility for the basic user should be respected - and that's why I'll honor your bury request. - dmadip, on 10/27/2008, -1/+6i think you meant ass pirates
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4For many, such as myself, GIMP is plenty. I'm not a pro, but I still like to play around sometimes. What's wrong with the non-professionals having a free tool to play with? No one is saying it's better than PS, but c'mon it's free. I just don't understand the rage of the anti-gimp folks.
- Meep3D, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4It breaks just about ever design convention in the book. It is the only program I have ever seen, ever, that has two File menus.
Usable, has a very specific meaning, and Gimp doesn't apply - gigatwo, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4Bah, if anyone feels like dropping by my DA (same username), I have a few good brush packs. I've also got some ***** ones, so look at the previews first.
I like the GIMP a lot. I do own a legit copy of CS3, which I use for Graphic design work for school. I can work a lot faster in the GIMP, but PS is a lot more f**k-up friendly, which makes it excellent for big projects.
GIMP is great for testing the waters of graphic design, PS is essential when you're a pro. I am definitely NOT a professional, but I was originally going to major in graphic design. (I changed my mind - over-saturated market) I do know what I'm missing when I use the GIMP, but it's not really that limited unless you're doing print work. It's just a bit less convenient. - se1zure, on 10/27/2008, -2/+6Because using premade brushes is a good way to produce unique and creative work..
- directrix13, on 10/28/2008, -0/+3@Meep3D:
Other than the odd menu placement (who cares) and non-MDI functionality (which I think is a feature). What else is not usable with it. Be specific. - gimping, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3GIMP 2.4 and up fully supports PS .abr brushes so i don't see the need to make gimp specific brushes any more.
- fuzzlepop, on 10/27/2008, -2/+5go gimps go get your brushes
- MeatMountain, on 10/27/2008, -12/+15I just pirate photoshop. It makes me feel like I'm sticking it to the man.
- LAMinator, on 10/27/2008, -4/+7because you actually have to PAY for GIMP brushes, right?
- gigatwo, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2GIMP can use PS brushes as well.
- smotpoker, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2I think it can open them by default but not edit/write them. It appears that you can add a script to gimp that allows it to properly write them according to this link ( http://wiki.panotools.org/Multi-Layer_TIFF_editing ... ) but I don't know a lot about graphics, so I may be misunderstanding.
- Ghalt, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Sweet! I love the GIMP. I love it more now with all the brushes! :)
http://www.makeebookcovers.com (learn to make eBook Covers with GIMP!) - imadsta, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1Thanks for free GIMP Brushes
http://carbulletins.com - aladrin, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1LOL The original author of the blood brushes says 'not that good brushes' [sic] on his page. yeah, great stuff.
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1If the GIMP interface is unwieldy, try Gimpshop. It shares all GIMP's advantages, including the long feature list and customisability, while addressing some common criticisms regarding the program's interface: GIMPshop modifies the menu structure to closely match Photoshop's, adjusts the program's terminology to match Adobe's, and, in the Windows version, uses a plugin called 'Deweirdifier' to combine the application's numerous windows in a similar manner to the MDI system used by most Windows graphics packages.
Due to the changes to the interface, many Photoshop tutorials can be followed in GIMPshop unchanged, and most others can be adapted for GIMPshop users with minimal effort.
http://www.gimpshop.com/ - hobophobe, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1Yeah. No unique or creative work has ever been made using the default brushes. Each started with the creation of wholly unique sets of brushes that were immediately deleted upon completion of the images.
- erhanaltay, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1I love you. I seriously do. Awesome article and VERY useful!
- andre4u, on 10/27/2008, -1/+2Is there some hidden joke here that mikedoth made? I'm not all that up-to-date with the TIFF jokes these days :P
So if it's not a joke, and its a serious question, someone answer it and stop digging the poor guy down. - syariscrewz, on 06/20/2009, -0/+0thanks nice .

http://kingdessert.com - Slyfer, on 06/15/2009, -0/+0I think Photoshop is better than GIMP, but I guess I Will give these a go :)
http://phonyexcuse.com/ - solid12345, on 10/28/2008, -2/+2They will aspire to nowhere, if you aren't willing to spend money on the tools you work with, don't expect to get anywhere, you wouldn't hire a construction worker who shows up with just a hammer and a nail now would you?
If you just want to make LOLcat pictures or crop family photos, the Gimp is fine. - Meep3D, on 10/27/2008, -3/+2All the aspiring shell programmers use MS-DOS!
(because that is how stupid you sound, face it, Gimp sucks and if it was pay for you'd trash it too) - mikedoth, on 10/27/2008, -6/+4Can GIMP open multi-layered tiff files yet?
- castrol, on 10/28/2008, -3/+0buried because the gimp is unuseable. standard based, cross-medium software is needed, not open source hyperbole.
- MeatMountain, on 10/27/2008, -9/+5I tried once, it was ridiculously unusable. Why are these things always written by Aspies?
- Meep3D, on 10/27/2008, -6/+2The Gimp sucks. Even stuff which has been trivially easy in PS for years is still impossible - Layer groups, non destructive effects like drop shadow, glows, strokes, not to mention adjustable gradient fills, decent text editing facilities and actual _thought_ put into the UI.
For someone used to a decent graphics package using Gimp is simply painful -
