Kevin's response seems more like a tail-between the legs reply to maintain Digg PR then an earnest response. They may have folded today, but what about tomorrow? I understand the legal quagmire they got themselves stuck in..but I think Digg has lost much of its credibility amongst users. I know we'll all return to Digg (it's an addiction after all), but I'm not impressed by this latest jumping on the bandwagon response ("sorry, we didn't know you would kick up such a fuss"). Maybe it's just me but I'm not so easy to forgive and forget.

This is about keeping digg, many of you say digg users wont be silenced but if they shut the site down then you will be. Now all the site is is a single line of code written over and over again by people who think they are saving free speech by eclipsing all other speech but their own. I am disappointed in the majority of the digg community.

    It's not about censorship or freedom of speech anymore, it's about spam.

    Anyone who has spammed the homepage before would get a royal asskicking from the digg community. Now I see what happends when that same weight is applied in reverse. Digg is not going to lose visitors because of the censorship, they will lose visitors because of the spamming of the same code which can be found in more then a few places.

    Remember KoolAidGuy, anyone spamming the homepage is no better then he was, and I remember how much people hated the few times that he struck.

    Just stop. We get it, digg shouldn't have removed the first story publishing the key, but the many posts that followed are just ridiculous. But, maybe I thought too much of the digg community. Maybe after this, digg should be a paid service like Somethingawful so that there is some real consequences to getting banned due to stupidity.

    In building and shaping the site I’ve always tried to stay as hands on as possible. We’ve always given site moderation (digging/burying) power to the community. Occasionally we step in to remove stories that violate our terms of use (eg. linking to pornography, illegal downloads, racial hate sites, etc.). So today was a difficult day for us. We had to decide whether to remove stories containing a single code based on a cease and desist declaration. We had to make a call, and in our desire to avoid a scenario where Digg would be interrupted or shut down, we decided to comply and remove the stories with the code.

    But now, after seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, you’ve made it clear. You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be.

    If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying.
