M$ Contributes $25,000 to Creative Commons
lessig.org — Surprise, surprise... Microsoft contributes $25,000 towards Creative Commons. This is more than enough to top CC's goal for 2005. Nice to see Redmond doing this instead of some big-shot front-page charity.

no digg - chamblah, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5wow, M$ eh? Pretty original there guy.
- JohnH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Is still cool though. If it boosts Creative Commons it's okay in my book.
- Webteeth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now it would be nice to see Microsoft donate that much or more to Wikipedia.
- MooseFruit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7"IMO: chump change
no digg"
how about they just keep their money next time then, jerk - skinner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0he only joined digg today too
- Quantic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@lotusleaf
thats not the point buddy, its that they met there goal and went over. You people dont digg stories for the most minute reasons. - NiLeS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Wow. He used M$. Wait - he also said "Microsoft". Never heard that one before.....
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You're my boy Microsoft.
- Spencerocks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7M$? Are you joking, they've done some ***** things in the past but it really is getting old.
Microsoft are trying to change their image.. by doing this they've shown a real incentive to acknowledging rights of developpers and artists.
I'm not a big fan of them but the M$ ***** is getting older than ***** that flies turn their noses up to. - seriypshick, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I have to say: M$ is winning back my repect.
Alhough, it's only $25,000. - Tracon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0hehe just wait a week you loose your respect again
- compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1At least they donated. I mean I hate M$, but w/e 25k is 25k.
- peterthegreat4, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0i thought apple was the good guy?
- inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8They donated the perfect amount, too much is pushy, and 25k helped creative commons meet their goal. For once just let it go... I really believe Microsoft wants to change their image, i don't know if they will be successful but at least we can give them a chance when the do good things.
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1M$?
Wow. Someone is a Mac user. - Braydon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You'd be suprised how much Bill nad his wife donate every year.....not saying he's not Satan, cuz he is..but man that guy donates a ***** load. It's in the Low billions.
- nannerla, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0im glad they did but they didnt donate enough imo
- cyanidenfs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Microsoft was always in my good books...
you ms haters can go to hell haha - rathburner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0although this is a respectable move i am sure people at Microsoft could and have paid more for half a pack of gold plated TP, now you replace the k with m in 25k and its diggworthy.
- Regnak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0This is lame. No offense ment to the poster, of course, just to M$... they've been trying to eliminate open source for years. This is like if I tried to sue to make you stop playing video games (or whatever you're interested in) and then when it didn't work, said 'Oh, sorry about that - here, have a nickle.'
- orabox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Actualy MS will get you to hell faster
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"You'd be suprised how much Bill nad his wife donate every year.....not saying he's not Satan, cuz he is..but man that guy donates a ***** load. It's in the Low billions."
Shouldn't be too surprised, the guy just made Time magazine for being one of the most charitable people alive. - capn_crunch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1what is your problem with M$? if you do a search like half the MS realted diggs use that. Why are you giving this guy a hard time?
- kryogenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now if they only donate to wikipedia... ;)
- apacin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even if it's just a publicity move, I'm sure Mr. Lessig and Co. appreciated the gesture. For those who are knocking Microsoft for trying to change their image -- grow up. You've got to give people a chance to make up for their past transgressions. MS has been handing out money left and right this year, including all of those lawsuit settlements. I'm sure they can afford to keep those cases in court for an eternity, but it seems that they just want to do the right thing and get on with being a good company. Kudos to them.
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Because it's this kinda stuff that brings Digg down, and makes it look childish. I don't recall /. having 'M$' on their frontpage. It is pointless now, since they are doing some really great things nowadays.
- capn_crunch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2one more thing, do you realize how much MS and the Gates's give to world charities? The truth is if it came down to giving a million dollars to CC or giving it to AIDS research, I would choose the latter. And if you chose CC your priorities are really f'ed up.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I think the last time "M$" was clever was around 1995.
- Seumas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it would be more impressive to do it like Warren Buffet does. He intends to horde his money during his life time (he lives a reather average suburban type of lifestyle from what I understand) and invest every dime he can. See, being such a great investor, it would be wiser for him to donate 10 billion dollars when after he dies than it would be for him to donate the 1 billion dollars it would start out as today. As long as he's around and investing, the money the charity could have today will multiple by tomorrow. And when he's gone, it'll get donated.
At least, that's what I have read -- and I've read a number of books on and by the guy.
Just because someone isn't giving away 90% of their income today doesn't mean they lack a charitable spirit. Perhaps they have something better in mind in the long run. - crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1M$ != MS.
What's the point? Money is soft? It's really stupid. - NtroP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As a confirmed Linux/Mac user, I have very strong negative feelings about Microsoft (which I feel their software & practices have earned). However, if they are trying to change their ways, I'm all for it. Maybe they can "earn" their way back into my good graces.
Donating money to Creative Commons is a Good Thing(tm) IMHO. It helps the Creative Commons movement and gives Microsoft some good karma. I'd like to imagine a time when MS is contributing as much to open source as, say, IBM. If/when that happens, I have no problem embracing them and their products again, but they'll have to earn it. Once a reputation is made, though, it's tough to change it. - panic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Surprise, surprise..."
Microsoft donates more money than any other company every year. Don't act surprised. - capn_crunch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I did a search for "M$" on digg
http://digg.com/search?search=M%24&submit=Submit - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0doubt it's to make up or 'do the right thing'
with that said, nice move - synae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1'Nice to see Redmond doing this instead of some big-shot front-page charity.'
is this a joke? you might remember bill gates being on the cover of time as one of the 'persons of the year' -- because of his philanthropy.
if that doesn't make microsoft a big-shot front-page charity, i don't know what will.
+digg - groverallnight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good news for CC.
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Synae - I think what he meant was that it's good to see him going after something smaller that could really make a difference in the tech and music world (not to mention publishing, etc) in addition to all the other charity events.
Oh and digg++ - NoOneButMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0'Nice to see Redmond doing this instead of some big-shot front-page charity.'
You mean Bill Gates? He's donated billion's to charity & is one of Time Magazine's People of the year - he's got my respect. - aboris26, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I think its deplorable not to appreciate the Gates foundation and write it off as "some big-shot front-page charity". Sure Buffet is going about it an alternate path, but Gates is helping now, finding efficient means to combat cured diseases that are killing thousands a day. Think about that for a second, 9/11 happens DAILY in the less fortunate areas of the world, not only that, but its main victims are children and from causes that we can cure for dollars here. The methodology of the Gates Foundation is powerful not only for its size (single largest private foundation in America), but for its efforts to invest wisely, help the maximum number possible. All while protecting the funds from the hands of the corrupt which have stolen billions in aid from Africa, to Afghanistan, to the South Pacific, killing millions. Microsoft is a misguided company, it has fallen behind on all fronts in terms of innovation, but Bill and Melinda Gates have done great works outside of Microsoft, and they should be commended for that. I would like to see more substantial restructuring of Microsoft to a more open and cooperative organization, which mind you would still make billions. Such and effort would do more than 25K to CC could ever do to the technology industry.
- succubuskiller, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Anybody who writes M$ is a dumb *****. Grow up from your 13 year old ways. IS your S key ***** broken you can't type like a normal person.
- NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"As a confirmed Linux/Mac user, I have very strong negative feelings about Microsoft (which I feel their software & practices have earned). "
And as a devout XP user, I feel Linux users can go to hell. MS makes high quality software, and there is nary a Linux distro/shell/gui alive that can come close to even touching on XP.
Mac on the other hand... - br0ken1128, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0
People keep saying 25k is very little, but hey it put them over their goal and it's money I sure wouldn't sneeze at .. it's a brand new car.. or half a year's salary, or a whole year's salary depending on where you work ;) .. hell .. could be two year's salary for some ..
Let's also not forget it's a DONATION .. free cash .. they didn't HAVE to donate jack ..
Disclaimer: I'm a linux systems administrator and PHP developer, I'm not a M$ fanboy.. but I still respect the gesture.. - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"This is like if I tried to sue to make you stop playing video games (or whatever you're interested in) and then when it didn't work, said 'Oh, sorry about that - here, have a nickle.' "
Yeah! Reminds me of how the Republicans secretly donated (just enough) to the Nader campaign, in the 2,000 (US) elections ...in the old tradition of 'divide and conquer', or 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend'!
Perhaps this time next year we'll be commenting on the new Open-Micro-Source programs, that pay M$ 'only a little bit of royalties', at first.
That's how they start a takeover! Infiltrate!
People often make the mistake of viewing the actions of a corporation --as if they were done by a person. That is precisely how corporations gain their advantage over any human interests.
" Don't Believe the Hype" (na na na na na)
Of course, by all means, you ACCEPT the nickle, smile and say "thank you, massa"
Is there such a thing as anti-digg, which is even less than no-digg? - t928, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If this was just to turn around bad publicity, has anyone noted who would be their target?
I doubt your average joe knows ***** about CC, and MS seems to love your average joe.. - Rajio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"M$ != MS.
What's the point? Money is soft? It's really stupid."
word. - echimu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very nice, it will help Creative Commons :)
- ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's cool, but that's a very smal amount for a big company like them.
- kinderstod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Man I'm so leet, I say M$ instead of MS, see that, that makes me awesome and elite. 2006 is year of Linux on the desktop!!!!
