xkcd: ***** Grapefruit
xkcd.com — Coconuts are so far down to the left they couldn't be fit on the chart. Ever spent half an hour trying to open a coconut with a rock? ***** coconuts.

- Wendigo6x3, on 02/25/2008, -8/+475completely disagree about the orange coordinate though...
- sgoldeen, on 02/25/2008, -6/+44Yea, oranges are prolly close to my #1 fruit.
- DarkSamus, on 02/25/2008, -1/+15what no mangoes? fail
- sgoldeen, on 02/25/2008, -0/+5Yea, mangoes are good too.

- freshyill, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3I love me some oranges, but while I'd certainly rank them much higher on the tasty axis, I don't deny for a second that my beloved navels are a pain in the ass to peel. Clementines, however are tasty *and* easy!
- loneraven, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2That's why I just cut my oranges in quarters with a knife, then peel it off that way. Tasty and quick.
Clementines, while easy, are a little bland for me. - wflan, on 02/25/2008, -2/+1Clementines remind me of your mother ... last night.

- tgc1, on 02/25/2008, -0/+4I like tangerines myself. Buy them by the case, they're awesome snacks. The only problem with them is that they disappear so damn quick.
- aceakm, on 02/25/2008, -2/+4How are Grapes Seeded EASY? Why are tomatoes, oranges, and bananas not tasty? ***** this.
- niczar, on 02/25/2008, -0/+4You don't remove the seeds, you just eat the fruit whole, not chewing completely so as to not crunch the (bitter) seeds.

pulp and bodies everywhere. - hotpepper, on 02/25/2008, -1/+11Agreed. And grapefruit are just as easy to eat as oranges. Unless you eat grapefruit with a spoon, which is just odd.
- niczar, on 02/25/2008, -0/+12I only eat grapefruits with spoon. I've never try without. Well, I'm going to the fridge to pick one up to try it.
And btw, grapefruits are awesome.- niczar, on 02/25/2008, -0/+12Well I just tried and I'm not sold on it. In fact I couldn't eat the damn thing. So I ended up squeezing it for juice and making a smoothie with a banana, yoghurt and frozen raspberries, which turned out to be totally ***** awesome.
- wellyuk, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3What kind of yoghurt? Just a plain, natural yoghurt? And what kind of blender did you use?
- codered1322, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1You need to separate the actual fruit part from the individual walls within the grapefruit. It takes about a minute to slice the inside loose with a sharp knife. Then just scoop the pieces out with a spoon. Simple.
- hotpepper, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1I've been eating it like an orange for years and have never had a problem.
- hbeierg, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3This is the one and only time where "Will it blend?" has and ever will be appropriate
- niczar, on 02/25/2008, -0/+12Well I just tried and I'm not sold on it. In fact I couldn't eat the damn thing. So I ended up squeezing it for juice and making a smoothie with a banana, yoghurt and frozen raspberries, which turned out to be totally ***** awesome.

- burrgrinder, on 02/25/2008, -1/+4Flavor is subjective, but ease isn't. An orange is way easier to eat than say, the watermelon or tomato. Watermelons and tomatoes pretty much need a knife to cleanly eat either, an orange just requires teeth or fingernails.
- drgmdp, on 02/25/2008, -1/+1a knife to eat a tomatoe?
- wellyuk, on 02/25/2008, -0/+5Repeat..

- mackattack22, on 02/25/2008, -2/+6am i the only one who thinks taking a bite out of a tomato is ***** disgusting?
- jrothweiler, on 02/25/2008, -4/+1actually, no.

- drgmdp, on 02/25/2008, -1/+1a knife to eat a tomatoe?
- elijahsnw, on 02/25/2008, -1/+5Screw Oranges... man Ricky Gervais said something about this once. Orange derivatives such as satsumas and tangerines are fine.. but without the aid of a knife oranges are a nightmare.. ever tried to open an orange whilst having a hang nail... I can still feel the agony sometimes when i type..... *shudders
- MadOtaku, on 02/25/2008, -0/+4Just don't use that finger. I could probably open an orange with one finger, if pressed, but 2 or 3 fingers would be easy. Have you ever had 7 hang nails?
- Skorme, on 02/25/2008, -1/+2Ever had a horrible habit where you can't stop biting your fingers? That's equally painful, and just as difficult as quitting smoking.
- Blandyman, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2HOLY ***** SKORME!
It's actually twice as hard. My girlfriend and I had this argument. She was quitting smoking and I was quitting biting my nails.
I'm finally off the nail habit but I can't seem to break the skin habit (eat the skin on the ends of my fingers... yeah, i know.)
It's pretty ludicrous to think of it as an addiction on the level of smoking, but it's something I do when my body's idle and half the time you don't notice you're doing it. Worse still is that I can toss a box of cigs away if I really want to quit... I can't just cut off my hands (at least, not without losing many vital functions)
- MadOtaku, on 02/25/2008, -0/+4Just don't use that finger. I could probably open an orange with one finger, if pressed, but 2 or 3 fingers would be easy. Have you ever had 7 hang nails?
- bonedead, on 02/25/2008, -1/+8My grandpa loves ***** grapefruit. Cuts em in half, gets his jagged spoon, sugar, grapefruit = 2 bowls.
- Skorme, on 02/25/2008, -2/+6I normally don't log on to comment on articles and random stuff. But, wow...I just had to do it.
Here goes...
You should ask your grandpa why he loves *****' grapefruit. Also, why does he need sugar and a spoon? Man, that just sounds freaky and leaves all sorts of vivid images painted.- ThEDeMoNKiNg, on 02/25/2008, -0/+9Rule # 34 of the Internet:
If you can imagine it (or have vivid images of it, I guess), there's porn for it.- Skorme, on 02/25/2008, -0/+6Still doesn't tell me why his grandpa loves ***** grapefruit.
Oh, maybe Google will tell me. - dshPls, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3"Still doesn't tell me why his grandpa loves ***** grapefruit. "
"his grandpa loves ***** grapefruit. "

- ThEDeMoNKiNg, on 02/25/2008, -0/+9Rule # 34 of the Internet:
- wellyuk, on 02/25/2008, -0/+4I'm with your grandpa on that. Sprinkle of sugar and out with the grapefruit spoon. It's a winning combination. Grapefruits are a little tart to eat without the sugar.
Grapefruit spooners, earlier today - http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/319N4RVKHKL. ... - CodyJakubowski, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1I think I might be your grandpa.
- Skorme, on 02/25/2008, -2/+6I normally don't log on to comment on articles and random stuff. But, wow...I just had to do it.
- elpohl, on 02/25/2008, -0/+7Just like Ralph said... Go banana!!!
- diskit, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3Apples and bananas need to be higher on the tasty scale while the pear should be lower.
- djbon2112, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3I think it's because large oranges ARE a pain in the ass. You get juice everywhere, they fall apart on you, you need a knife and spoon to eat them, etc.
They still rock don't get my wrong, but he does have a point on the easiness scale. But they taste great.- loneraven, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3I've never seen anyone need a spoon to eat an orange. NEVER.... no matter how big the orange is
That's just weird.- djbon2112, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Yea I do eat them weird, but still, my point stands!
- loneraven, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3I've never seen anyone need a spoon to eat an orange. NEVER.... no matter how big the orange is
- jrotondo, on 02/25/2008, -0/+0Blasphemy! Citrus fruit conquers all. And bananas are quite easier to eat then tomatoes. I see his logic about grapefruit (disagree entirely) but it makes sense on the graph I suppose.
- KingGorilla, on 02/25/2008, -0/+1I find oranges tasty. like marriage. First, you have the skin... then the sweet, sweet innards...
- credence, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1Well that wasn't creepy at all.
- cryonix, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2"Coconuts are so far down to the left they couldn't be fit on the chart. Ever spent half an hour trying to open a coconut with a rock? ***** coconuts."
- FuzzyWhisper, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Definitely. Good oranges are both delicious and easy to peel by hand. I like them just as much as crisp, tangy Pink Lady apples.
- da_bradler, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1What the hell is Pineapple doing up so high on the tasty scale, ***** pineapple it's over represented in any fruit cocktail I"m sick of ***** PINEAPPLE! cept on pizza.
- sgoldeen, on 02/25/2008, -6/+44Yea, oranges are prolly close to my #1 fruit.
- dwninjungleland, on 02/25/2008, -12/+4The real question is: seedless grapes, or peaches?
- kiiwii, on 02/25/2008, -0/+9No, the real question is, where's the kiwi!
- TSSaloic, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Seedless Grapes FTW!
- mrfreeziexp, on 02/25/2008, -26/+288Watermelons should be higher on the tasty scale IMO.
- pennyfan87, on 02/25/2008, -12/+196I agree. And I'm not even black.
- capiCrimm, on 02/25/2008, -33/+25yes, because sloshy water is tasty.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 02/25/2008, -13/+22you don't like watermelon either? finally, i've met one of my own!
- Yodwinder, on 02/25/2008, -6/+10You've now met another. Watermelon sucks, in fact any melon sucks, none have flavor.
- Light11, on 02/25/2008, -4/+9cantaloupe rocks my world.
- scottfarner, on 02/25/2008, -1/+8They don't have any flavor because you're buying the ***** that has been engineered to stay "fresh" for 3 weeks in transit and sitting in your local grocers produce section. Try picking up a melon from a local farmers market. Ask for one that is ripe now and eat it within a day or two.
- CapeKid, on 02/25/2008, -0/+4Honeydew, that's the money melon.
/Simpsons - bbardlbradd, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Cantaloupes suck too.
- rpgmaker, on 02/25/2008, -1/+4I like watermelon but I know is overrated.
- Qtip42, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Ya watermelon is seriously overrated. Everyone is like "oh they're so gooooOD!" but all they really taste like is flavored water.
- bbardlbradd, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2I seriously like the artificial watermelon flavor more than the natural one. That means watermelons suck.
Oranges, Tangerines, Bananas, Strawberries, Apples (Green>Red), Grapes, Plums, Mangos, Cranberries... All better natural.
- Yodwinder, on 02/25/2008, -6/+10You've now met another. Watermelon sucks, in fact any melon sucks, none have flavor.
- jakash, on 02/25/2008, -7/+4Lol, I know I'm gonna get dugg down but I also cant have any type of melon...
I don't like cucumber either but apparently thats something to do with the pH in my mouth...- cdahlkvist, on 02/25/2008, -1/+15But you still love pHenis in your mouth.
- HenvY, on 02/25/2008, -7/+3You're right, watermelon has an incredibly high water content, there is very little flavour in it. It's a nice texture and taste though, even if it is weak.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 02/25/2008, -13/+22you don't like watermelon either? finally, i've met one of my own!
- kpmoore, on 02/25/2008, -6/+39Bananas, too.
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 02/25/2008, -1/+4Yes, the banana is probably the easiest fruit to eat. And it is tasty too.
- djk21108, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2This is just one big Demitri Martin joke right?
- wellyuk, on 02/25/2008, -0/+4And bananas are absolute proof that God exists too.
- logicalnoise, on 02/25/2008, -3/+3saw the chart and immediately thought your exact quote word for word.
- exomni, on 02/25/2008, -6/+12And chicken!
- bbardlbradd, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2OMG YUS! Chicken+Tomatoes= ***** delicious.
Chickens are a bit difficult, but they are wonderful fruits. - nestcrw, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3And KoolAid!
- bbardlbradd, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2OMG YUS! Chicken+Tomatoes= ***** delicious.
- mGARANDEUR1, on 02/25/2008, -2/+4totally agree. I personally like grapefruit and lemons. They pack quite a bit of vitamins in them.
- thesonofdarwin, on 02/25/2008, -5/+2Who is this "they" you speak of.
- mGARANDEUR1, on 02/25/2008, -0/+7The fruits: they contain vitamins.
- Rodalli, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3Jeebus. Jeebus puts the vitamins in.
- codered1322, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Are you the incorrect grammar nazi?
- StolenLamp, on 02/25/2008, -1/+3Vitamins or not, they taste like *****.
- bbardlbradd, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1Grapefruit, yeah. I cant stand that ***** on anything. Lemons though are good in certain situations... but most of the time they are as useless as grapefruit.
- lolwutpear, on 02/26/2008, -0/+0Vitamins or not, grapefruits are the *****.
Lemons... meh. They're not the best for eating straight, even if it's fun to snarf a wedge sometimes.
- thesonofdarwin, on 02/25/2008, -5/+2Who is this "they" you speak of.
- down4twenty, on 02/25/2008, -2/+3i see you never had a real watermelon. its the sweetest thing in the world. But ofcourse all youve had is the genetically ***** up mega melon that the the most profitable.
- mllawso, on 02/25/2008, -1/+2You're right, the big ones from the store suck. The best watermelon I've ever had was grown by my neighbors and the size of a football.
- hotpepper, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2Especially in the summer.
- Hoogs, on 02/25/2008, -6/+8I hate watermelon. It's basically all water, it's a complete mess to eat, and what little flavor they have isn't even that good.
- mGARANDEUR1, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2Most fruit is all water.
- xyqxyq, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Chart needs a Z axis for messiness. You can't really grab a watermelon and sit at your desk and just OM NOM NOM NOM. You need a huge knife of doom to carve it, some kind of cutting board or similar to hold the torrent of juices at bay, etc. A peach/apple/banana/etc. is less messy with no props. Just grab it and go.
- Turr, on 02/25/2008, -9/+57what about raspberries?
- mrfreeziexp, on 02/25/2008, -25/+5***** raspberries.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 02/25/2008, -3/+35Yeah, they're not even spelled how they sound. Just like ***** Wednesdays.
- DRINKxREDxBULL, on 02/25/2008, -1/+13And ***** February.
- covertbadger, on 02/25/2008, -3/+5Eh? How do you pronounce February if not 'Feb-ru-ary'? Do you say 'Febry' or something?
***** Wednesdays, though. - mjfitzge, on 02/25/2008, -0/+10@ covertbadger
i pronounce it feb-yoo-ary. so does everyone i've ever met. do you actually toss the "r" sound in there? - mmortal03, on 02/25/2008, -0/+1http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=february
- kiiwii, on 02/25/2008, -0/+7Technically, the r is supposed to be pronounced.
For some reason, though, it makes me feel too pompous to stick the R in there in general conversation, so I usually stick to Feb-yoo-ary.
I don't place it in the same category as mispronouncing words like "ask", "library", or "nuclear" though. - kiiwii, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3As a follow up to my above post, here's a quote from the link mmortal posted: (about pronouncing it Feb-yoo-ary)
"Although sometimes criticized, this dissimilated pronunciation of February is used by educated speakers and is considered standard." - sgtbutterscotch, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3It's weird how perspective changes connotations completely. I always pronounce February like it's spelled and I thought most people did. Somehow throughout my years, the correct pronunciation has become internalized in me. I think I was in first or second grade when I found out it was really spelled "February." Hope I haven't sounded like a pompous ass when I've used it.
- covertbadger, on 02/25/2008, -3/+5Eh? How do you pronounce February if not 'Feb-ru-ary'? Do you say 'Febry' or something?
- macweirdo42, on 02/25/2008, -0/+7You mean I've been pronouncing "Wed-nes-day" wrong this whole time?
- DRINKxREDxBULL, on 02/25/2008, -1/+13And ***** February.
- bbardlbradd, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1February should be changed to Febiuary and Wednesday should be changed to Wendzday.
Language/spelling standards need to conform to people, people don't conform to them.
Oh, and Terrorism to Turrism for bush.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 02/25/2008, -3/+35Yeah, they're not even spelled how they sound. Just like ***** Wednesdays.

- bowe, on 02/25/2008, -0/+6Pomegranates are in a good place, IMO. I'd like to see a graph of all food, including lobsters. ***** lobsters, so delectable, yet such a pain in the ass to eat. They'd definitely occupy the upper left of quadrant II.
- kubedawg, on 02/25/2008, -0/+1I just buy grenadine... Also, I'd switch peaches with pears. Pears are much better. Oh and watermelon needs to be at the top of the tasty scale.
- sourc3, on 02/25/2008, -26/+2Peaches are immensely difficult. You have to peel them AND pit them. Grapefruit, while difficult, and quite tasty IMHO, and don't require that much more effort than peaches.
I totally agree about the coconuts tho. Eff them.- pennyfan87, on 02/25/2008, -4/+59Who the hell peels a peach?
- sgoldeen, on 02/25/2008, -2/+4Aye, I never bother with peeling my peaches.

what idiot would put oranges and bananas on the untasty side?
and grapefruits (especially red) are awesome - Fxer, on 02/25/2008, -1/+1For coconuts you just have to smash them on the floor. I come from a tropical country, and they always made me open coconuts when i was little AND make sure I didn't spill the water inside It is worth the hassle, though.
- degron, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2I could eat a peach for hours.

- JoeDiggsIt, on 02/25/2008, -0/+10But about another 3 inches to the left. It usually takes me an hour to eat a pomegranate.
- djdole, on 02/25/2008, -0/+19A bowl of water, it's the key.

- IgWannA, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3grapefruits have a much thicker pith (the white stuff).
- micahned, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2You don't eat them the same way. Oranges are peeled and eaten as segments, lemons are typically sliced (although it depends on their usage) but I think grapefruit is the easiest of all the citruses to eat. Simply cut it in half, sprinkle a little sugar on them, and then use a special serrated grapefruit spoon and dig out the segments.

...wait, wrong presentation - exomni, on 02/25/2008, -8/+4Grapes should be much higher on the difficulty axis. You have to wash them, unlike bananas, or watermelon, or apples which you can just rub on your pants. And have you ever tried to rip off a section of grapes? Unless you have scissors, you're be standing there trying to tear the goddamn stem for hours, until you've inadvertently knocked all the grapes off the section of grape stem you wanted and just give up.

- IgWannA, on 02/25/2008, -2/+1you don't need to wash grapes. bananas you have to peel (i know, only takes a second, but still) and watermelons you need to cut.

- kickinwing, on 02/25/2008, -0/+1Raw onions are one thing. They should always be cooked, in my opinion. But there is nothing like an open faced German Johnson tomato sandwich with salt, pepper, and a little bit olive oil (and sometimes fresh mozzarella) on a summer day.

Grapefruits are the best. They taste amazing when on the munchies, and with a BIT of sugar, though its not at all necessary if you're eating a good grapefruit. Tomatoes are also awesome raw, i eat them like apples! Except theres no stupid core to bite around. I think of a tomato as more of a vegetable so i put a bit of salt and pepper on em. aaamazing.

- TBBucs, on 02/25/2008, -8/+5Alt Text: Coconuts are so far down to the left they couldn't be fit on the chart. Ever spent half an hour trying to open a coconut with a rock? ***** coconuts.
- Starman97, on 02/25/2008, -1/+0Then there's durian fruit, it's got a whole zipcode to itself on that chart.
- Syphon8, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1It's title text.
- TBBucs, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1I didn't want to be the dick who goes against what everyone else calls it just for the sake of showing everyone that I know what it's really called.

- hokie47, on 02/25/2008, -2/+3Women tell me that grapefruits makes my semen taste better.
- IgWannA, on 02/25/2008, -0/+14they tell you that because they want you to experience the pain of eating them.
- xdeliriumx, on 02/25/2008, -2/+10If by women, you mean men...
not that there's anything wrong with that. - octophobic, on 02/25/2008, -0/+7It also keeps her seamen from getting scurvy.
- kixxster, on 02/25/2008, -0/+1i heard pineapples are supposed to do the same
- xSet, on 02/25/2008, -3/+11Grapefruit is good if you just.... poor a bunch of sugar on it... yeah ***** grapefruit.
- icono887, on 02/25/2008, -3/+8buried as inaccurate?
- djdole, on 02/25/2008, -2/+3Or lame.
- terrix, on 02/25/2008, -1/+2Or both, I buried as inaccurate, but while xkcd is awesome, this particular comic doesn't warrant front page material, its a chart with his personal view on fruit. Big flippin whoop, its mildly amusing at best, unless you're like me and actually like grapefruit.
- n8f8, on 02/25/2008, -2/+9Way off. Pomegranates are super tasty and in what way is a grapefruit difficult? Also, some pink grapefruit are actually sweet.
- h4mx0r, on 02/25/2008, -0/+11God I've tried to cut open a coconut. Near *****' impossible.
- octophobic, on 02/25/2008, -0/+7All you need is a power drill, a table mounted vice, and a hammer. Is that so tough?
- thinsoldier, on 02/25/2008, -1/+1It's not impossible. You're just a pussy.
http://picasaweb.google.com/gowan.anna/BahamaVilla ... - hatchetbearer, on 02/25/2008, -1/+1what self respecting digger dosent have a dremel to score the outside enough where it will just crack apart
- neferiousrich, on 02/25/2008, -0/+1i use a flathead screwdriver and a hammer.
Now i feel like a pina colada.... - elliotys, on 02/25/2008, -0/+4I was down surfing, on this nearly deserted beach on the southern coast of mexico. It was me my friend and a couple mexican families. After trying to open a coconut for a 1/2 hr to no avail, one of the daughters (in a full dress on the beach, lol) comes up and offers to help. She grabbed a small rock, and systematically destroyed that thing in about 5 minutes.
Moral of the story, is that we are all a bunch of pussies, compared to this little mexican girl.
- bj1989, on 02/25/2008, -2/+101: Slice grapefruit in half
2: Add sugar
3: Grab a spoon
4: Enjoy!
It's very tasty and not really difficult.- twitchr, on 02/25/2008, -1/+4NO! Sugar just ruins the natural goodness of the grapefruit! Also, they make a special knife thingy that makes eating a grapefruit MUCH easier.
- noisician, on 02/25/2008, -0/+4i recommend a grapefruit spoon, which is like a normal teaspoon but with a partially serrated front edge.
- ifknot, on 02/25/2008, -6/+1i recommend you all get a ***** life!
- twitchr, on 02/25/2008, -0/+7wait, i have no life cause i like grapefruit? Or because i discuss it on the internet?
after all, you took time out of your day to be an ***** on the internet, so really, who needs to get a life? - id000001, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3Maybe a grapefruit is stuck in his ass or something.
- twitchr, on 02/25/2008, -0/+7wait, i have no life cause i like grapefruit? Or because i discuss it on the internet?
- micahned, on 02/25/2008, -0/+1I disagree. A little bit of sugar will help balance the tartness of the grapefruit. Too much will ruin it though. I also like to put a little pinch of salt on mine, too. Like watermelon.
- mikedub1219, on 02/25/2008, -0/+1love me some grapefruit
- KingGorilla, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2Banana:
